The Xbox “Installation Stopped” message is a queue state, not one universal error code. The right fix depends on whether you are installing from a disc or downloading digitally, where the progress stopped, and whether other games are affected. Check the destination drive first, cancel the stalled queue item, then use the branch below: install a disc game offline before applying its update, or reinstall a digital game from your owned library. Network and console-state resets come later, and clearing local saved games should be reserved for cases where local data is suspected.
What “Installation Stopped” means
Xbox uses this message when an installation in the download queue has stopped progressing. It does not identify a single cause. A disc installation can stall near 0% because the console is trying to download an update while it is still copying the base game. A digital installation can stop because the target storage device is full, the queue has incomplete data, reserved space or an add-on is involved, or the console’s network state needs refreshing.

The failure point is useful evidence. A stop at or near 0% points you toward storage checks and, for discs, an offline base install. A stop in the middle of a transfer makes storage, queue corruption and network stability more likely. A stop only when an update begins suggests separating the base installation from the update. If several unrelated games fail, treat the problem as console-wide and escalate after the standard checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling one title.

Identify your branch before changing anything
- Installation type: Is the game being read from a disc, or downloaded from your digital library?
- Failure point: Does it stop at 0%, during the main transfer, or when an update starts?
- Scope: Does only one game fail, or do multiple games stop?
- Destination: Is the console installing to internal storage or an external drive, and does that device have enough free space?
- Data risk: Cancelling a queue item removes the incomplete installation task. Clearing local saved games removes local save copies, although cloud saves can resynchronize after you confirm they have uploaded.
Write down the game, installation type, percentage, selected drive and whether an update is shown in the queue. That information prevents you from applying a higher-risk step when a simpler one fits the symptom.

Fix the error in the safest order
1. Check free space and the install location
Open the console’s storage management area and verify the drive selected for the game. Confirm that the internal or external device has enough free capacity for the base game and any update the queue is preparing. A console can appear to have room overall while directing the installation to a different, full device.
If more than one storage device is connected, check the actual destination shown for the stalled game. Free space on another drive does not help if the queue is targeting a full one. Correct the destination or free space before attempting another installation.
2. Cancel the stalled queue item and restart
- Open My games & apps.
- Open the queue and highlight the game that says Installation Stopped.
- Press the Menu button on the controller and choose Cancel.
- Restart the console.
This removes the incomplete queue task; it does not remove your ownership of a digital game. After the restart, follow the digital or disc branch instead of immediately resuming the same stalled item.

3. Install a disc game offline, then update it
Disc installations need a separate procedure when the stop occurs near zero or while the base files are still copying. Bethesda’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance explains that the console may try to download an update before the disc installation has finished, allowing the update and base copy to interfere with each other.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings and choose Go offline.
- Cancel the stalled download in the queue.
- Eject the game disc.
- Restart the console or perform a full power cycle.
- Insert the disc again while the console remains offline.
- Let the base installation finish completely before reconnecting to the network.
- Go back online and allow the game’s update to download after the disc install is complete.
Do not judge the offline step by the update queue: the purpose is to finish copying the version on the disc without an online update competing for the same installation process. If the base install itself cannot complete offline, check the disc and destination storage, then move to Xbox Support rather than repeatedly starting the same queue item.
4. Reinstall a digital game from Owned games
For a digital title, cancel the incomplete installation and start again from the complete owned library, not from a partial queue entry or an add-on tile. Open My games & apps, go to your owned games, select the title and choose the install command.

If the queue repeatedly stops after an add-on begins or if reserved data appears to be involved, clear the game’s reserved space and reinstall the base game before installing add-ons. Reserved space is temporary game-managed data; clearing it is different from deleting your saved games. Install and launch the base game first, then add downloadable content one item at a time so a failing add-on can be identified.

5. Clear local saved games only when local state is suspect
A damaged or inconsistent local state can keep an installation or update from completing. The repair option is Clear local saved games, available under the console’s storage-device settings. This removes save copies stored on the console; it does not uninstall the game.
Before using it, open the game while online, allow the save data to synchronize, and verify that the newest progress appears in the cloud. After clearing local saves, launch the game while connected so Xbox can download the synchronized copies again. If a save has never synchronized, clearing local data can remove the only copy, so do not use this step as a first response to an ordinary queue stoppage.

6. Refresh the network and console state
If storage is adequate and the installation still stops, reset the console’s network state. Go to Settings > Network settings > Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address > Clear, then restart the console when prompted. Bethesda documents clearing the alternate MAC address and power-cycling as actions for stuck Xbox downloads.
A full power cycle refreshes console state beyond a normal pause or resume. Use the console’s complete shutdown and restart procedure, then retry the installation. This step changes network and system state; it does not erase installed games or cloud ownership.

Xbox supports Ethernet as a network connection method. Temporarily connect the console to the router with an Ethernet cable and retry the download. A wired test is diagnostic: if the installation proceeds on Ethernet but repeatedly stops over Wi-Fi, instability or interference on the wireless path is contributing. Once the test is complete, you can return to your normal connection and investigate Wi-Fi placement or reliability.

Choose the first fix by symptom

Troubleshooting by where the bar stops
It never moves from 0%
First confirm the selected drive has room and cancel the stalled queue item. If the game is on disc, stay offline while the base copy runs; an update competing with the disc install is a documented cause of this pattern. For a digital game, restart the download from Owned games after removing the incomplete entry.
It reaches a percentage and then stops
Check free space again because updates and temporary installation data can require capacity beyond the initial download. Restart after cancelling the queue item, then try the Alternate MAC reset or a wired connection if the same title stops again. Avoid clearing local saves unless you have evidence that local game state, rather than transfer stability, is involved.
The base game installs but the update stops
For a disc, this is exactly the situation in which an offline base installation helps: finish the disc copy first, reconnect, and then download the update. For a digital game, reinstall the base title from the owned library and add downloadable content only after the base installation launches successfully.

When multiple unrelated titles stop, the problem is broader than one game’s files. Complete the storage check, queue cancellation, network-state reset, full power cycle and Ethernet test. If failures persist across those checks, contact Xbox Support. The available guidance does not establish a universal hardware diagnosis, so support should determine whether service or a deeper account, storage or console investigation is needed.
What each action changes
- Cancel: Removes the stalled queue task and its incomplete installation attempt.
- Offline disc install: Prevents an online update from competing with the base files on the disc.
- Digital reinstall: Recreates the game installation from the owned library instead of resuming damaged queue data.
- Clear reserved space: Removes temporary game-managed data while leaving saved-game storage as a separate concern.
- Clear local saved games: Deletes local save copies, so cloud synchronization must be confirmed first.
- Alternate MAC clear and power cycle: Refresh network and console state without being a substitute for adequate storage.
- Ethernet test: Changes the connection path temporarily to distinguish Wi-Fi instability from other causes.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Escalate after the destination drive has sufficient space, the queue item has been cancelled and restarted, the appropriate offline or digital reinstall path has been tried, and network and power-cycle tests have been completed. Persistent failure across several games is the clearest reason to contact Xbox Support. Repeating reinstalls without changing the storage, network or installation conditions only recreates the same failure and can consume substantial time and bandwidth.
For a single disc game that cannot complete even while offline, report that the base installation fails independently of updates. For a single digital game that fails after a clean install from Owned games, report the title, stopping percentage, destination drive and whether add-ons were installed. Those details help support separate a title-specific problem from a console-wide one.
