Microsoft says the controller-focused, full-screen interface began reaching select markets on April 30, 2026; availability is gradual, not universal. It brings games and library browsing into a console-style Windows interface while leaving the PC’s desktop and underlying Windows system intact.
When did Xbox mode arrive on Windows 11?
Microsoft first said on March 11, 2026, that Xbox mode would begin rolling out in April. On April 30, Xbox reported that the rollout had started in select markets. That makes it an existing feature in gradual release—not a feature still due “next month.” Microsoft has not established universal worldwide availability, so whether it is available depends on the supported market and device.
The April announcement named Windows 11 laptops, desktops, and tablets, and Microsoft describes the mode as available on Windows 11 PCs and handhelds. The rollout is expanding over time; the announcement does not give a complete country-by-country availability list.
What Xbox mode does
Xbox mode is a full-screen, controller-optimized way to browse and launch games on Windows. It puts a game library and recently played titles within reach, and lets you move between the Xbox-style interface and the regular Windows desktop. Microsoft describes the aim as making it easier to shift between productivity and play while retaining Windows’ flexibility.

The interface can bring together the Xbox Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts. Separately, Microsoft’s Windows gaming guide says the Xbox PC app can connect Game Pass, purchased games, and installed games from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and other storefronts. Which titles appear or launch depends on the game, storefront, installation, account, and applicable service access; an aggregated library is not a promise that every PC or console game is playable through it.
Does Xbox mode turn a Windows PC into an Xbox console?
No. It is a navigation and launcher experience built on Windows, not a hardware conversion or a way to run Xbox console binaries on a PC. The Windows desktop remains available, and the mode is designed to embrace the openness of Windows rather than replace it with the console operating system.

Microsoft’s announcements establish a controller-first interface and library aggregation, not a general frame-rate boost or access to every Xbox console game. Xbox mode should therefore be understood as a different way to reach and launch supported PC games, not as a performance upgrade or console-compatibility layer.
Which Windows 11 version supports it, and how do you open it?
Microsoft Support lists Windows 11 version 24H2 and 25H2 for Xbox mode and says it is available only in supported markets. Check that your device is on a listed version and that the feature has reached your market.

Turn it on or find an entry point
- On a Windows 11 PC form factor other than a handheld, open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode to enable it.
- To enter Xbox mode, use an available entry point such as Game Bar or Task View, or press Win+F11.
- To return to desktop work, switch back to the Windows desktop from the mode.
Microsoft documents these entry points, but availability can still depend on the supported market and the feature reaching your device.
Do you need a controller or Game Pass?
Controller
The interface is optimized for controller navigation, which is its main distinction from using the ordinary desktop. Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless Controllers among Windows 11-supported peripherals. The material describing Xbox mode does not say that a controller is required to use Windows or launch games; it establishes controller optimization, not an exclusive input rule.

Game Pass
The mode can surface the Game Pass catalog, but Microsoft’s description does not establish that a Game Pass subscription is required to enter Xbox mode or use it with games you otherwise own or have installed. A subscription and eligible plan are needed for the subscription catalog, and access to titles and features varies by plan, platform, and region. Microsoft’s May 20, 2026 Windows gaming guide describes Game Pass as offering “hundreds of games”; the catalog changes over time.

Xbox mode’s practical advantage is a unified, console-style front end for compatible PC gaming libraries. It does not remove differences among storefronts, subscriptions, game requirements, or cloud availability.
