Microsoft does not publish a universal maintenance schedule that requires every Xbox One controller to be updated simply because it is old. Check for firmware when your console or the Xbox Accessories app offers an update, when you are troubleshooting connection or input problems, or when a documented feature update applies to your controller.
You can update through an Xbox One console or a Windows PC. The console route is normally simplest. Windows guidance hosted by Microsoft Community says firmware installation requires USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows; Bluetooth is not supported for the firmware update process.

What an Xbox One controller update actually is
A controller firmware update changes the software stored in the controller. It is separate from the operating-system update installed on the Xbox One itself. A controller can continue working for years without a scheduled firmware download, and the available update depends on the controller revision, its current firmware and Microsoft’s rollout.
The available evidence does not establish a universal interval, a required annual check or a percentage of controllers that need updating. Treat the update as situational maintenance: install it when the console or Xbox Accessories identifies one, or when a release addresses a problem or feature you need.

When updating is worth checking
- Your console or Xbox Accessories shows an Update command. That is the clearest indication that firmware is available for the connected controller.
- You are diagnosing a controller problem. Checking firmware is a sensible step for connection, switching or input trouble before assuming the hardware has failed.
- You need a documented feature. Some supported controller families received firmware features for switching between devices and reducing latency, but those features are not universal to every Xbox One controller.
- You have changed how you connect. A controller used with both an Xbox and a Windows device may benefit from checking whether its firmware supports the relevant cross-device behavior.
If none of these situations applies and the controller works normally, there is no evidence-based reason to force an update merely because the controller is several years old.
First identify whether the console or controller needs updating
Xbox exposes two different update paths. Selecting the wrong one can make it appear that nothing is available.
| What is being updated | Where to look | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One system software | Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console | Updates the console, not the controller. Microsoft says a grayed-out “No console update available” message means the console is current; the Latest console update status screen provides the status view. |
| Controller firmware | Settings > Devices and accessories > Xbox One Wireless Controller, then Update when offered | Updates the selected controller. Menu wording can vary with the console software installed. |
Microsoft’s system-update instructions are documented in Get Xbox One system updates. Updating the console will not substitute for a controller-firmware update, and updating the controller will not update the console.
How to update an Xbox One controller on the console
The following route is documented by Activision Support in an article dated November 22, 2019. Xbox software has changed over time, so use the equivalent current label if your dashboard arranges the menus differently.

- Sign in to Xbox Live on the Xbox One.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable. Use a cable that carries data, not one intended only for charging.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Devices and accessories.
- Select Xbox One Wireless Controller. If more than one controller is connected, select the one you intend to update.
- Choose Update if the option appears.
- Leave the controller connected and allow the process to finish. Do not disconnect the cable while firmware is being written.
The exact menu sequence and wording are described in Activision’s Xbox One controller-firmware instructions. If no update command is offered, the console is not presenting firmware for that controller at that time; the absence of a button is not proof that every controller has identical firmware or that an update exists elsewhere.
How to update on a Windows PC
Microsoft Community guidance describes using the Xbox Accessories app on Windows. It is community-hosted guidance rather than a current, dedicated Microsoft Support article, so app labels can change with Windows and Xbox Accessories releases.
- Install or open Xbox Accessories on the Windows PC.
- Connect the controller with a USB data cable, or connect it through an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
- Wait for Xbox Accessories to identify the controller.
- If the app presents a firmware update, follow its on-screen instructions and keep the controller connected until completion.
The cited guidance specifically says Bluetooth is not supported for controller firmware updates. Pairing a controller over Bluetooth may be useful for playing, but it is not the connection method to rely on when installing firmware. The connection and update limitation are described in Microsoft Community’s wireless-controller update discussion.
Console or PC: which route should you choose?
| Route | What you need | Connection accepted for the update | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox One | An Xbox One, Xbox Live sign-in and a compatible USB data cable | USB connection to the console | Players who already use the controller with their console and want the most direct menu path |
| Windows PC | A Windows PC, Xbox Accessories, and either a USB data cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter; Bluetooth is not supported for firmware updating according to Microsoft Community guidance | Players without convenient console access or those troubleshooting a controller on Windows |
Neither route requires a paid update utility. If you need a cable, confirm the controller’s connector and buy a compatible cable that supports data. The available material does not establish one connector type for every Xbox One controller revision, so do not assume that a cable for one revision fits another.

What firmware updates can change
Firmware is not only about fixing a fault. Xbox Wire reported on September 8, 2021 that an update was being flighted for Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controllers. The announcement described improved cross-device connectivity and reduced latency. It also said the listed controllers could remember one Bluetooth host and one Xbox Wireless host, allowing switching between those devices.
That announcement was a dated feature rollout for specified controller families, not a promise that every Xbox One controller received the same update or currently supports those capabilities. In practical terms:
- A controller must belong to a supported family for a feature to apply.
- A feature announcement does not prove that the firmware is offered to every owner at the same time.
- Bluetooth support for playing and Bluetooth support for installing firmware are different questions; the Windows guidance still excludes Bluetooth as an update connection.
- Reduced latency is a stated goal of the 2021 update announcement, not a universal measured improvement for every setup.
Read the original announcement at Xbox Wire’s September 8, 2021 report.
Cable and connection requirements
Use a data-capable USB cable
A cable that only supplies power may charge the controller without allowing the console or PC to communicate with its firmware. When an update route does not detect the controller, check that the cable supports data and that its plug matches the controller’s port.

Do not infer compatibility from age alone
“Xbox One controller” covers multiple revisions and controller families. The cited sources do not identify one connector specification that applies to every revision. Check the physical port on your controller before buying an accessory.
Use the supported wireless method on PC
For a Windows update, the documented wireless option is an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. Bluetooth pairing is not the supported firmware-update path in the Microsoft Community guidance.

The controller works, but Update is missing
Check that you selected the controller under Settings > Devices and accessories, rather than the console’s update page. If the controller is recognized and no Update command is offered, there may be no firmware package being presented for that controller at that moment. The sources do not provide a universal schedule that would let you predict when another package will appear.

Xbox Accessories cannot see the controller
Use USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows rather than Bluetooth. If the app still does not identify the controller, check the cable, adapter connection and controller selection before attempting the update again.
The update seems to stop
Keep the controller connected until the application or console reports completion. Interrupting a firmware write can leave the process incomplete. If the interface reports an error, record the exact message and use the same supported connection when retrying; the cited sources do not establish a separate recovery utility or a guaranteed fix for every error code.
How to decide whether to update today
- Check the symptom. If there is no problem and no update notice, an immediate update is optional rather than a maintenance obligation.
- Check the correct device page. Use Devices and accessories for controller firmware; use Updates & downloads only for Xbox system software.
- Choose the available route. Use the Xbox One if you have it nearby; otherwise use Windows Xbox Accessories with USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
- Confirm the physical connection. Make sure the cable carries data and fits the controller revision.
- Verify applicability. Feature changes announced for Bluetooth-capable, Elite Series 2 or Adaptive controllers do not establish the same support for every Xbox One controller.
Bottom line for Xbox One owners
Updating is generally worthwhile when the system offers firmware, when you are troubleshooting, or when your supported controller is eligible for a feature release. It is not a routine requirement triggered by the controller’s age. Use the console’s Devices and accessories page or Windows Xbox Accessories, keep the connection wired or use the supported Xbox Wireless Adapter, and treat console system updates as a separate task.
