The original Xbox One’s rear panel includes HDMI Out for a TV, HDMI In for an external device such as a cable receiver, optical audio out, USB, Ethernet, and several dedicated connections. The detailed port guide below is for the original 2013 Xbox One: the One S and One X have different layouts, so identify your model before following a diagram.
What are the ports on the back of an Xbox One for?
The labels below describe the original Xbox One’s rear panel. Its connections are shown in a 2013 guide to the console; later Xbox One revisions should not be assumed to share the same arrangement.

| Connection | What it does |
|---|---|
| Power supply | Connects the original console to its separate power supply. |
| HDMI Out | Sends the console’s picture and sound to a TV or display. |
| HDMI In | Receives an HDMI signal from another device, such as a cable or satellite receiver. It is not the TV connection. |
| S/PDIF | Optical digital audio output for compatible sound equipment. |
| Two rear USB 3.0 ports | Connect compatible peripherals or external storage. The console also has a third USB port on its side. |
| Kinect port | Dedicated connection for the original Xbox One Kinect sensor, carrying data and power. |
| IR Out | Connects an optional infrared blaster. |
| Ethernet | Provides a wired network connection. |
| Lock slot | Accepts a compatible laptop-style security lock. |
| Ventilation openings | Allow airflow; keep them unobstructed. |
How to connect the original Xbox One
- Connect HDMI Out to the TV. Use the console’s HDMI Out port for the display connection. The original Xbox One guide says an HDMI cable was included with the console, so a replacement is only needed if yours is missing or damaged.
- Use HDMI In only if you want to connect another HDMI source. A cable or satellite receiver can connect here for HDMI pass-through. This is optional and does not replace the HDMI Out connection to the TV.
- Choose wired networking if you need it. Connect an Ethernet cable to use a wired network; Ethernet is not required to connect the console to a TV.
- Add optical audio only for compatible equipment. Connect S/PDIF to a sound system with an optical input. The guide notes that an optical cable is not included.
- Keep the vents clear. Avoid blocking the console’s ventilation openings.
Check the Xbox One model before using a port diagram
“Xbox One” refers to multiple hardware revisions, and the labeled port list above is specifically for the original 2013 console. A technical summary reports that the original, One S, and One X differ in HDMI revisions and that the One S and One X dropped the dedicated Kinect port. That is useful orientation, but it does not establish a complete, model-by-model port map. For a later console, check its exact model documentation or a clear diagram for that revision rather than relying on the original console’s layout.
