No. The Xbox One S has its power supply built into the console, so you do not need a separate external power brick beside it. You still need an AC power cord running from the console to a wall outlet.
Microsoft stated when it introduced the Xbox One S that the console “has an internal power supply.” That design is the key difference between an internal supply and a detachable brick: the conversion hardware is inside the Xbox One S enclosure, while the removable cord only carries mains power between the console and the outlet.

What the Xbox One S actually includes
An Xbox One S setup has two relevant power components:

- AC power cord: the cable that connects the console to a wall outlet. “No power brick” does not mean “no cable.”
Microsoft’s 2016 Xbox Wire announcement describes the Xbox One S as a smaller console with “an internal power supply.” You can read that statement in the original announcement at Microsoft’s Xbox Wire report from June 28, 2016.

Because the supply is internal, there is no external power brick to hide, replace, or match to the console during normal setup. The only loose power accessory you should expect is the AC cord.
Does the Xbox One S work without a power cable?
No. The console still needs a physical connection to mains electricity. Plug the AC cord into the power socket on the Xbox One S and connect the other end to a suitable wall outlet or properly rated power strip. The internal supply does not make the console wireless and does not allow battery-only operation.
Microsoft’s Xbox One S safety documentation discusses the supplied AC cord and says owners should use the cord that came with the console or a cord supplied by an authorized repair center. The manual directs owners to Xbox support for replacement information: Xbox One S Product Safety Guide (EU/MEA English).

Internal supply versus external brick
The phrase “power brick” normally refers to a separate, relatively bulky adapter placed between a console and the outlet. A console with that arrangement has three visible pieces: the console, the brick, and one or more cords. The Xbox One S removes the separate brick by placing the power-supply electronics inside the console.
| Power arrangement | What you see in the room | Xbox One S status |
|---|---|---|
| Internal power supply | Console plus an AC cord | Yes |
| External power brick | Console, separate brick, and cords | No separate brick |
| No power connection | Console operating without mains or a battery | Not supported |
This is why an Xbox One S can appear to have “only one cable” for power while still containing a complete power supply. The box has not disappeared; it has moved inside the console.

How to set up the Xbox One S power connection
Use this sequence when installing or reconnecting the console:
- Place the Xbox One S on a stable, ventilated surface. Do not cover its vents or position it where the console cannot shed heat.
- Check the AC cord for cuts, crushed sections, bent contacts, loose molding, or other visible damage. Do not use a damaged cord.
- Insert the console end of the AC cord into the Xbox One S power socket. Push it in firmly without forcing it at an angle.
- Connect the other end to a wall outlet or a power strip that is suitable for the electrical service in your region.
- Turn on the console and check whether it starts normally. If there is no response, troubleshoot the outlet and cord before assuming the internal supply has failed.
The exact connector shape and regional electrical rating are not established by the cited manual passage. Do not buy a cable solely because a listing calls it an “Xbox cable.” Match the exact Xbox One S model, the connector, and the electrical requirements for your country, or obtain replacement guidance through Xbox support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to do if your Xbox One S is missing its cord
A missing AC cord does not mean you need an external power brick. You need the correct replacement cord for the console and region. Microsoft’s safety guide recommends using the cord supplied with the console or one received from an authorized repair center, and it directs owners to Xbox support for replacement-cord information.
Before ordering any replacement, verify:
- That the console is an Xbox One S, not a different Xbox model.
- That the cord’s console-side connector matches the socket on your unit.
- That the cord is intended for the electrical system and outlet style in your region.
- That the seller identifies the cable’s electrical rating and model compatibility clearly.
- That the cable is undamaged and from a reputable source.
If a listing does not state the connector or regional rating, treat compatibility as unconfirmed. A generic product title is not enough evidence that a cord is safe or suitable.
What to do if the cord is damaged
Stop using a cord with exposed conductors, burn marks, a melted plug, severe kinks, or a connector that becomes loose during normal use. Do not tape over serious damage or attempt to repair the cable yourself. Unplug it by holding the plug rather than pulling on the cable.

Troubleshooting: the console will not turn on
A missing external brick cannot be the cause, because the Xbox One S does not use one. Check the simpler, externally visible causes first:
1. Test the wall outlet
Plug another known-working device into the same outlet, or move the Xbox One S to a different outlet. If a power strip is involved, check its switch and reset protection. A dead outlet can look like a console failure.
2. Reseat the AC cord
Disconnect the cord at both ends, inspect the plugs and socket, then reconnect it fully. Do not force a connector that does not align naturally.
3. Inspect for cord damage
Look along the entire cable for cuts, crushed insulation, scorch marks, or looseness. Replace a suspect cord through the channel recommended by Microsoft rather than testing it with improvised wiring.

4. Remove unnecessary power-strip variables
If safe and practical for your installation, connect the console directly to a suitable wall outlet to determine whether the strip or its protection circuit is involved. Keep the console connected only through an appropriate, undamaged cord.
5. Escalate persistent failure
If a verified outlet and suitable cord produce no response, the fault may be inside the console. Because the power supply is internal, there is no external brick you can swap as a first repair step. Contact Xbox support or an authorized repair provider rather than opening the console or working on mains circuitry yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Xbox One S accessories with other Xbox models
Xbox consoles can look similar in listings, and sellers often group several models under one cable description. The Xbox One S’s internal-supply design is specifically documented by Microsoft; that does not establish that every other Xbox model uses the same power arrangement or connector.
When buying a replacement, identify the model from the console’s label and documentation, then compare the connector and regional requirements. Do not assume that an accessory advertised for an earlier original Xbox One, another Xbox One variant, or a different generation is interchangeable just because the plug appears similar.

Frequently misunderstood points
“I cannot see a brick, so is my console missing a part?”
No. The Xbox One S is designed without a separate brick. The supply is inside the console; the AC cord is the expected external power accessory.

“Can I use any two-ended AC cable?”
Not automatically. The available official passage does not establish a universal connector or regional rating. Confirm the exact model, connector, and electrical requirements before using a replacement.
“Is the console wireless because it has no brick?”
No. It still needs an AC cord connected to mains power. The term “internal” describes the location of the power supply, not a cordless operating mode.
“Should I open the console to replace the supply?”
Not as a routine fix. The supply is an internal mains-powered component. If a known-good outlet and correctly matched cord do not solve the problem, use Xbox support or an authorized repair route.
Bottom line for setup and replacement
The Xbox One S has an internal power supply, so there is no external power brick to locate or purchase. You do need an AC power cord, and Microsoft’s guidance is to use the cord supplied with the console or one obtained through an authorized repair channel. Verify the model, connector, and regional electrical requirements before buying any replacement, and treat a persistent no-power condition as an internal-console service issue rather than a missing-brick problem.
