1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn July 2025, Matt Turnbull, an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, posted on LinkedIn that people facing job loss could use large language model tools such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to plan their careers, revise résumés, write outreach messages, and reframe difficult feelings. The post appeared days after Microsoft announced layoffs of about 9,000 people. It drew criticism, and according to contemporaneous coverage it was deleted. What follows covers what the post said, how it was worded, why it was received so poorly, and what the reporting does and does not establish.
What Turnbull suggested
Engadget reported on July 4, 2025 that Turnbull had been experimenting with LLM tools to reduce what he called the “emotional and cognitive load” of job loss. The post offered sample prompts in four areas. TechRadar and Fast Company also covered the post and the reaction to it.

| Use the post suggested | What the post described | Point to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Career planning | Using an assistant to rebuild a career plan after a layoff | The output is only as useful as the facts and goals you supply; the post did not describe any checks on the advice produced. |
| Résumé and LinkedIn copy | Adapting a résumé and profile text | Generated wording can overstate or invent accomplishments, so every claim needs to be checked against your own record. |
| Networking outreach | Drafting messages to contacts | Messages written in a generic tone can read as template outreach; recipients respond to specifics about the relationship. |
| Emotional reframing | Reframing impostor syndrome and similar feelings | This is the speaker’s personal experience of using the tools, not a tested psychological method. |
The table reflects the functions named in the post. The post did not describe a test of these tools against any measure of outcomes, and the coverage does not report one.

The post opened with: “These are really challenging times, and if you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone and you don’t have to go it alone.”
Its key caveat, as reproduced by Engadget and Fast Company, read: “No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience. But at a time when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.”

That caveat matters for reading the post fairly. Turnbull framed the tools as an aid to work that remains his or the job seeker’s own. He did not describe them as a substitute for counseling, medical care, or a professional career adviser, and the reproduced text does not say he intended them to be.
Why the post drew backlash
The main source of criticism was timing. The post reached readers while Microsoft’s layoffs were still being reported, and it recommended AI tools as a way to cope with the same job losses. Readers and commentators read that pairing as tone-deaf, even though the post itself did not claim that AI had any role in the layoffs.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Coverage establishes that juxtaposition, not causation. Reporting describes the layoffs as affecting about 9,000 employees, a figure given in contemporaneous reports rather than a verified final count. Nothing in the reviewed coverage suggests that AI tools were responsible for the cuts, and this article does not claim otherwise.
Coverage also does not establish Turnbull’s intent beyond what the post says, and the reports reviewed do not include a direct response from him to the criticism. Readers should treat any description of his motives as interpretation.

What the evidence does and does not show about AI and distress
The question of whether AI tools help people cope with layoffs is separate from whether a professional executive found them useful. The sources for this story do not include an independent study or measured outcome showing that AI reduces distress after job loss. The post reports personal experience, and the tools it recommends are general-purpose software, not mental-health services.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That gap is the reason the reaction focused less on the drafting help and more on the emotional advice. Helping rewrite a résumé is a task with a visible result. Suggesting a chatbot as a source of reassurance about impostor syndrome implies a role for software in an area where the post offered no evidence.

A practical reading for laid-off workers
If you are using an AI assistant after a layoff, the post’s own caveat suggests a workable boundary. Use the tool for structure and first drafts, then make the substance yours.
- Check every accomplishment, title, date, and metric in generated résumé text against your records before you send it.
- Rewrite outreach messages so they name a specific shared project, connection, or reason for contacting that person.
- Treat any emotional suggestion from a chatbot as a prompt for your own thinking, not as a reliable assessment of your situation.
- If you are struggling with distress, talk with people you trust, a licensed counselor, or your country’s support services rather than relying on a software tool alone.
