Microsoft has officially named its next-generation first-party console Project Helix, and it plans to ship alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer milestone, not a consumer launch date. Xbox has not published a retail price, a consumer release date, or final specifications for Helix. The PS6 half of the headline is rumour: as of October 8, 2026, Sony had not announced PS6 specifications or a launch date in any source available for this article.
What Xbox has officially confirmed
Identity and purpose
In the official Xbox Wire summary from GDC, dated March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation, described Project Helix as Xbox’s next-generation first-party console. He said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” That is a design goal stated by Xbox. No consumer hardware has been independently tested, so performance claims remain company statements.

Silicon and the AMD partnership
Xbox says Helix runs on a custom AMD SoC, developed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR, with a focus on rendering, simulation, efficiency and ray tracing. Xbox describes the intended result as an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” That is a description of the target, not a benchmark.

The partnership predates the GDC announcement. Xbox’s June 2025 post also outlines hardware plans across console, handheld, PC, cloud and accessories. Read Xbox’s June 19, 2025 announcement on AMD.
Developer alpha timing
The timing statement is the one firm date in Xbox’s official material. Ronald wrote: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.” Keep the phrase “to developers” in any quote. Alpha hardware is for software teams building and testing games; it does not establish when consumers can buy a console.

Game compatibility
Xbox said it intends to keep games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come. The announcement is a broad platform commitment. It does not list every compatible title or set out title-by-title conditions, so a reader should treat it as stated intent rather than a guarantee for any specific game.

Figures in the official announcement
- More than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog, according to the March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire summary.
- More than 5,000 developers around the world currently building for Xbox, per the same article.
- Four generations of Xbox games in the playability commitment described above, stated as scope rather than a compatibility list.
Confirmed, reported, and unknown
Most confusion around Helix comes from mixing official statements with secondhand reports. The table separates them.

| Consumer launch in 2027 | AMD CEO Lisa Su, as reported by Windows Central, February 8, 2026 | Reported target. The report says Microsoft had not committed to a hard consumer launch window. |
| A “family of devices for Gen-10,” with a console first and options for players on the go | Asha Sharma, Microsoft Gaming CEO, as reported by GamesRadar in October 2026, citing an internal town hall transcript shared by Windows Central | Secondary report of internal remarks, not a public product specification |
| Retail price | Not stated in Xbox’s March 11, 2026 announcement | Not stated |
| Final hardware specifications | Not stated in Xbox’s March 11, 2026 announcement | Not stated |
| Sony PS6 specifications, launch date, or announcement | No Sony announcement found in the sources reviewed | Not established |
The Lisa Su remark and the Asha Sharma remarks both come from reporting rather than Xbox’s own statements. The Windows Central report is the source for the 2027 framing, and GamesRadar’s account of the family-of-devices comments relies on that same internal transcript. Leadership context is in Microsoft’s February 20, 2026 announcement naming Asha Sharma EVP and CEO, Microsoft Gaming. The GamesRadar account is available at GamesRadar’s report on the family-of-devices comments, and the Windows Central reporting is at Windows Central’s report on the next-generation Xbox and the reported 2027 target.
The PS6 part of the headline
The headline pairs Xbox’s announcement with PS6 rumours, but the sources available for this article do not establish PS6 specifications, a launch year, or a Sony announcement. Calling PS6 confirmed, assigning it a release year, or comparing its specifications with Helix would go beyond the evidence. Any PS6 figure should be checked against a Sony primary statement before it is repeated.

What would change the picture
Helix will not have a consumer date until Microsoft announces one. These are the signals that would move it from developer milestone to buyable product:
Recommended Free Tools
- A published consumer specification sheet from Xbox, replacing the company’s current descriptions of goals.
- An official launch schedule that gives a consumer date, as distinct from the 2027 developer alpha milestone.
- Retail availability and pricing from Microsoft or its retail partners.
- A title-by-title compatibility list, if Xbox publishes one, that shows how the four-generation commitment applies to specific games.
Should you buy now or wait?
If you want to play now, the hardware that exists today is the current Xbox console, such as the Xbox Series X. Helix is not a substitute for it yet, and the sources here do not establish current pricing or stock, so check retailer listings directly. If your priority is compatibility, Xbox’s four-generation commitment is a stated intention, so confirm the specific titles you care about before deciding. Waiting for Helix makes sense only if you can accept an open-ended consumer timeline: the one firm date Xbox has given is for developers.
