A second change followed: on June 25, 2026, Xbox announced that console prices would rise worldwide effective August 1, 2026. That date has now passed, but the reporting available for this article does not include a complete current Canadian price list, so the Canadian figures below should be read as dated reports rather than today’s shelf prices.
What changed in Canada in May 2025
MobileSyrup reported the Canadian console and controller prices on May 1, 2025. Those figures are the most detailed Canadian breakdown available for the 2025 change, and they are the baseline for the comparisons below. Canadian retailers could sell above or below these recommended amounts, so treat them as the manufacturer-set reference rather than a guaranteed price.

MobileSyrup said official Xbox Stereo and Wireless headsets were also rising in price in Canada and the United States, but its article did not give the Canadian headset amounts, so no headset figure can be stated here.
Games and Game Pass in 2025
Microsoft said some new first-party games would rise to US$79.99 by the 2025 holiday season. MobileSyrup translated that into roughly C$110, but neither report named the affected titles. The US$79.99 figure applies to some new releases, not to the Xbox game catalogue as a whole, and the Canadian equivalent was an approximation rather than a confirmed store price.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate was listed at C$22.99 per month, and MobileSyrup reported that the subscription price would stay the same at the time of the 2025 announcement. That is a statement about May 2025 only; this article does not confirm the subscription price as of October 2026.
Why Microsoft raised prices in 2025
Microsoft’s stated reason was “market conditions and the rising cost of development.” AP reported that the company did not specifically point to tariffs in the explanation it gave. Tariffs were part of the wider news context at the time, but they were not identified by Microsoft as a cause of this decision.

The console increase effective August 1, 2026
Xbox’s official Xbox Wire post, dated June 25, 2026, said console prices would rise worldwide effective August 1, 2026. The increase applies to consoles only; the announcement did not add a new controller or game price change.

Microsoft’s explanation for the 2026 change
Xbox said console storage and memory prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and expected another doubling by fall 2027. These are Microsoft’s own projections and cost figures, not independently verified forecasts. The company also wrote: “Unlike phones, computers, speakers, and other consumer devices, consoles are typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make.” That is Xbox’s characterization of console economics.
Financing and refurbished options
Xbox described buy-now-pay-later and financing options, previously played console programs, and certified-refurbished consoles. The announcement says certified refurbished consoles are available through Microsoft Stores for up to US$100 off MSRP. Program availability varies by region, and the announcement does not establish the terms that apply in Canada.

How the two changes differ
| Item | May 2025 change | August 1, 2026 change |
|---|---|---|
| Announced | May 2025, reported by MobileSyrup on May 1, 2025 and by AP | June 25, 2026, Xbox Wire |
| Scope | Consoles, controllers, headsets, and some new first-party games | Consoles only |
| Canadian figures | Stated in C$ for consoles and controllers | Not stated in C$; amounts given in US$ |
| Amounts | Consoles up C$70 to C$80; controllers up C$10 to C$25 | 512GB up US$100; 1TB up US$150 |
| Games | Some new first-party games to US$79.99 by the 2025 holiday season | Not stated |
| Model changes | None stated | 2TB model sunset |
Do not compare the 2025 Canadian amounts with the 2026 U.S.-dollar increases as if they were in the same currency. A C$ figure from 2025 and a US$ figure from 2026 measure different things.
How to check current Canadian prices
Because the reporting here does not give a current Canadian price list, use the following steps before relying on any figure:
Best Value
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
- TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
- Identify the exact model: storage size, disc or digital edition, and whether it is a Special Edition.
- Check the price on the Microsoft Store Canada or an authorised Canadian retailer, and note the date you looked.
- For controllers, confirm the tier. The Wireless Controller, the Special Edition, the Elite Series 2 Core, and the Elite Series 2 have different prices.
- Compare the live price against the May 2025 figures in the tables above, keeping in mind that they are from a single 2025 report and may not match current retailer pricing.
- For the 2026 console change, look for a Canadian dollar price from Xbox or a Canadian retailer. If none is published, the U.S.-dollar amount in Xbox’s announcement is the only official figure available.
Verify Game Pass pricing separately, since the subscription figure above is from May 2025 and was not confirmed for later dates.
