The documents described an all-digital, cylindrical Xbox Series X refresh with 2TB of storage, improved wireless hardware, lower power consumption and a projected $499 price. Microsoft’s actual 2024 lineup was different: a 1TB digital Series X and a 2TB Galaxy Black Series X that retained its disc drive.
Brooklin was a leaked plan, not the 2024 Xbox Series X Microsoft sold
The Brooklin codename came from Microsoft documents exposed through the Federal Trade Commission’s court case over the Activision Blizzard acquisition. The documents showed that Microsoft had been considering a mid-generation Xbox Series X refresh. They did not confirm that the design had entered production or guarantee that it would reach stores.

According to contemporaneous reporting, Brooklin was part of a broader hardware plan that also included Ellewood, a proposed Xbox Series S refresh, and Sebile, a redesigned Xbox controller. The leaked roadmap reportedly targeted a late-2024 launch, with reports variously pointing to October, late October or November.

That schedule became doubtful after Microsoft’s official June 2024 hardware announcement revealed three different Xbox options. Microsoft did not call any of them Brooklin, Ellewood or Sebile. The safest conclusion is that Brooklin was apparently shelved, superseded or never advanced beyond internal planning.

What price was Brooklin expected to have?
The leaked material reportedly listed an expected price of $499. That matched the original launch price of the disc-equipped Xbox Series X, making the proposed refresh notable because it was supposed to offer twice the storage and a new design at the same headline price.
However, $499 was an internal projected price, not an announced Microsoft MSRP. Microsoft never sold a cylindrical Brooklin console for $499, so it should not be described as Brooklin’s final price.
The proposed package reportedly combined:
- An all-digital Xbox Series X console.
- A 2TB internal SSD.
- The redesigned Sebile controller.
- Updated wireless hardware and a more efficient platform.
The rumored cylindrical, all-digital design
Brooklin’s most recognizable feature was its shape. Leaked renders showed a cylindrical console rather than the familiar rectangular Series X tower. The optical disc drive was removed, apparently allowing Microsoft to create the unusual form factor.
The front panel was expected to include a power button, a controller-pairing button and a USB-C port. That would have replaced the current Series X’s front-facing USB-A connection. Some reporting also interpreted the documents as suggesting Xbox Design Lab customization, but that was not a confirmed retail feature.

- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
Brooklin’s digital-only design would have created a major compatibility issue for physical-media owners. It could not accept Xbox game discs or 4K UHD Blu-ray movies. Physical Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games that are backward-compatible on Series X still require the original disc to remain in an optical drive during play. Backward compatibility of the game does not make a disc usable on a console with no disc drive.
Anyone with a substantial disc collection would therefore have needed a disc-equipped Series X or another compatible Xbox. Digital versions of those games could still be played, but they would have required digital ownership.
Leaked Brooklin specifications
| Feature | Brooklin plan | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | 2TB internal SSD | Leaked capacity; usable space would be lower after system reserves |
| Disc drive | None | All-digital console |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 reportedly planned | Not confirmed for Microsoft’s released 2024 models |
| Front connection | USB-C, reportedly with power delivery | Based on leaked planning material |
| Power | Lower consumption and a smaller power supply | Projected targets, not independent retail measurements |
| Gaming performance | No meaningful CPU or GPU increase reported | Not a documented “Pro” console |
2TB storage
Brooklin was reportedly planned with a 2TB internal SSD, double the nominal 1TB capacity of the original Series X. That would have been its clearest practical advantage for players with large modern game libraries.
Two terabytes would not mean 2TB of available game-installation space: the Xbox operating system and reserved storage reduce usable capacity. It also would not eliminate the need for expansion storage for players who keep many large titles installed.
Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2
The leaked specifications reportedly included Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. Wi-Fi 6E could improve wireless performance on a compatible 6GHz network, while Bluetooth 5.2 could improve peripheral support and connectivity.

- Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more

- Xbox One games and accessories work together
- Bring your games and movies to life with immersive audio through Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Those upgrades would not automatically make downloads faster. Router capability, internet speed, household congestion and Xbox’s own servers can all be the limiting factors. Wi-Fi 6E benefits also depend on compatible equipment and regional support for 6GHz networking.

Brooklin was not documented as a faster Xbox Series X. Reporting based on the leaked material described a smaller, more efficient chip design, lower power consumption and a power supply approximately 15% smaller than the existing unit.
The documents also reportedly targeted a low-power standby mode using roughly 20% of the current standby power. Those figures were planning targets, not measurements from a finished retail console.
In practical terms, Brooklin would have been an efficiency, storage, connectivity and industrial-design refresh—not an Xbox Series X Pro or a higher-performance successor.
What was the Sebile controller?
Sebile was the codename associated with the controller in Microsoft’s leaked hardware plan. Reported features included:
Rank #4
- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
- Haptic feedback that could also function as a speaker.
- An accelerometer.
- Quieter buttons and thumbsticks.
- Modular thumbsticks intended to improve longevity.
- A rechargeable and replaceable battery.
- A “lift to wake” function.
The controller was described internally as a substantial redesign, but it was never confirmed as the standard controller for a retail Xbox Series X. The controller included with Microsoft’s released 2024 consoles should not be presented as Sebile.
Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 is a real alternative for players interested in adjustable thumbsticks, interchangeable components and remappable controls, but it is not proof that Sebile’s leaked features reached stores.

At the June 9, 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft announced three Xbox Series X|S options for the holiday period:
- Xbox Series S, 1TB, Robot White.
- Xbox Series X, all-digital, Robot White.
- Xbox Series X, 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition.
Microsoft said the new options would provide the same speed and performance as the existing lineup while offering different storage, design and pricing choices. Availability varied by market. The announcement did not identify the products as Brooklin or Sebile.

| Category | Original Series X | Leaked Brooklin | Released 2TB Galaxy Black model |
|---|---|---|---|

| Storage | 1TB nominal | 2TB planned | 2TB |
| Wireless | Official specifications list 802.11ac dual-band wireless | Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 reportedly planned | Do not assume Brooklin’s wireless specifications |

The white digital Series X is therefore not Brooklin. The official specifications identify it as a 1TB Xbox Series X Digital Edition with the same 15.1 × 15.1 × 30.1 cm dimensions listed for the disc-equipped Series X. The 2TB Galaxy Black model retains its 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Both facts separate the retail consoles from the leaked cylindrical design.
Would Brooklin have been worth buying?
It would have suited:
- Digital-only players who wanted 2TB of internal storage.
- Owners with Wi-Fi 6E networking equipment.
- Buyers interested in a distinctive, smaller-looking design.
- Players concerned about power consumption and standby efficiency.
It would have been a poor fit for:
- Anyone with Xbox, Xbox 360 or Xbox One game discs.
- People who use Xbox as a 4K UHD Blu-ray player.
- Buyers expecting higher frame rates, improved graphics or a faster CPU/GPU.
- Users whose network equipment could not take advantage of Wi-Fi 6E.
- Anyone who could buy a disc-equipped Series X at a substantially lower price.
For current buyers, the decision is clearer than the leak made it seem. A disc-equipped Series X remains the flexible choice for physical libraries. The 1TB digital model suits buyers committed to digital purchases. The released 2TB Galaxy Black model is the closest retail match to Brooklin’s storage capacity, but it is not the same product: it retains the disc drive and does not establish that Brooklin’s cylindrical design or leaked wireless hardware reached production.
Storage expansion is another option. Microsoft supports Xbox Storage Expansion Cards, such as the Seagate 1TB Expansion Card, for high-speed storage intended to match the internal SSD’s performance. USB storage can be useful for archiving games and running older compatible titles, but it is not an equivalent replacement for an internal SSD or expansion card for all optimized Series X|S games.

Verdict: what happened to Xbox Series X Brooklin?
Brooklin was a real Microsoft proposal revealed by improperly redacted FTC court documents. The plan reportedly called for a $499, 2TB, all-digital Xbox Series X with a cylindrical design, USB-C, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and improved energy efficiency, alongside the redesigned Sebile controller.
But those were leaked internal plans and projections. Microsoft did not announce or sell that console. Its actual 2024 lineup used familiar Series X hardware in digital and disc-equipped configurations, including the 2TB Galaxy Black model. No public evidence shows that the cylindrical Brooklin reached retail, so it is best described as an apparently shelved, superseded or abandoned refresh—not as the 2024 Xbox Series X itself.
