For a better Xbox Series X picture, match the console’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR, VRR and ALLM settings to what your TV or monitor actually supports. Start at Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details; then check the specific HDMI input and connection path if a feature is missing. No single setup guarantees 4K at 120 Hz or every gaming feature on every screen.
Check what your TV reports before changing settings
On the Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details. Xbox recommends this screen to check which 4K and HDR capabilities the connected display reports. Use it as your starting point rather than assuming a television’s advertised maximum applies to the input and setup you are using. Xbox’s TV-readiness guide outlines the console’s supported display features.
The report describes the current connection, not every capability a display might have under different conditions. A TV’s HDMI inputs can differ, and an intervening receiver or other device can affect what the console detects. If the report does not show an expected feature, check the selected TV input and the full connection path before replacing equipment.
Set resolution and refresh rate to the supported combination
In Settings > General > TV & Display Options, choose the highest resolution and refresh-rate combination that the console identifies as supported for your setup. Series X|S support refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but that ceiling does not mean every display can run every resolution at 120 Hz. A 4K television, for example, is not automatically a 4K/120 Hz display.

Resolution affects image detail; refresh rate affects how often the display can update the image. The useful target is the best combination available to your particular screen and connection, not a number selected without checking compatibility. Windows Central’s setup guidance also notes that available combinations depend on the TV and the input in use. Read its Xbox Series X|S setup guide.
Enable VRR and ALLM when your display supports them
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) are supported Series X|S features, but their availability depends on the display and connection. If the Xbox offers these options for your setup, enable them when you want the display to use the corresponding gaming feature. If an option is absent, do not treat that alone as proof the console is faulty: the TV model, selected input, or another device in the connection path may not support or pass it through.

Make HDR and Dolby Vision settings model-specific
HDR support and calibration depend on the display and the format it supports. Use the HDR calibration flow available on the console and follow the TV manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Do not apply a generic TV menu recipe: settings and labels can vary, and a Dolby Vision option is not guaranteed on every display or connection.
Xbox Support lists separate help topics for HDR TV settings and Dolby Vision, but the current detailed menu steps could not be verified from those pages. For that reason, this guide does not prescribe a universal HDR or Dolby Vision menu path beyond the console’s available calibration flow.

If 4K, 120 Hz, VRR or HDR options are missing
- Read 4K TV details again. Go to Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details and note which capabilities the console reports.
- Check the TV’s selected HDMI input. Consult the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions: supported features may differ between inputs, and a suitable feature may require a particular port or TV setting.
- Check the entire connection path. For the most advanced Xbox display features, Xbox says an HDMI 2.1 connection is required. The console, cable, TV input and any receiver or other device between them must support the feature together.
- Try a direct connection to the TV. If the console is routed through another device, connect it directly to the relevant TV input to help identify whether that device is limiting the reported capabilities.
- Consider a replacement cable only if needed. First check the cable supplied with the console and the TV input. A compatible replacement may help with a cable or length problem, but buying a cable cannot add features the TV or input does not support.
A certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a reasonable replacement to consider when the existing cable or required run is the suspected constraint. General HDMI 2.1 TV guidance also emphasizes checking the connection chain rather than treating the cable as the only variable. Tom’s Guide’s HDMI 2.1 TV guide provides that context.

When comparing settings or deciding whether a screen meets your needs, check four things for the exact model and input: supported resolution-and-refresh combinations, HDR formats and calibration support, VRR and ALLM availability, and compatibility across the full HDMI connection path. A television’s headline specification alone does not establish that every input supports the same feature set.
