Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test another known-good disc before resetting or opening your console. If only one disc fails, the disc is the likely culprit. If several known-good discs fail, suspect the Xbox Series X’s software, optical drive, or loading mechanism. DVDs working while games or Blu-rays fail can point to a format-specific optical-drive problem.
Work through the steps below in order, and stop testing if the drive clicks, grinds, scratches discs, or repeatedly ejects them.

First, identify what is failing
“Not recognizing a disc” can describe several different problems:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- No response: no disc tile, error message, or noticeable spin-up.
- Unreadable-disc error: the console detects the disc but cannot read it.
- Installation failure: the disc is detected, but installation stops. This may involve storage, a download, an update, or the specific game rather than the drive.
- Intermittent detection: the disc appears and disappears or works only occasionally.
- Movie playback failure: a Blu-ray app, region, disc layer, or movie-disc compatibility issue may be involved.
- Stuck or repeatedly ejected disc: this is more likely to involve the drive’s loading mechanism.
Check the console and disc format
Only the Xbox Series X has a physical optical drive. The disc-less Xbox Series S cannot read game or movie discs.

The Series X can read compatible physical Xbox game discs, including supported Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles, plus DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD Blu-ray movie discs. Backward compatibility is title-specific, however; not every Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc works simply because it is an older Xbox format. Burned or unofficial discs may also have compatibility or playback limitations. See the Xbox Series X hardware reference for optical-drive context.
Try these fixes in order
1. Inspect and clean the disc
- Press the eject button and remove the disc.
- Hold it by the edges and inspect it for cracks, warping, deep radial scratches, lifting labels, fingerprints, dust, or residue.
- Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a disc-safe cleaner.
- Wipe from the center toward the outer edge, rather than in circles around the disc.
Do not use toothpaste, abrasives, paper towels, aggressive solvents, or a visibly cracked disc. iFixit recommends cleaning the disc and, when possible, testing it in another compatible Xbox (iFixit’s Series X disc-drive troubleshooting guide).
2. Test several known-good discs
Use a controlled comparison:
- Retry the disc that failed.
- Test a known-good Xbox game disc.
- Test a DVD or Blu-ray if available.
- If possible, test the problem disc in another compatible Xbox.
| Result | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Only one disc fails | Damage, residue, a manufacturing defect, or title-specific compatibility. |
| Every disc fails | Software, sensor, motor, laser, or another console-side fault. |
| Games fail but DVDs work | A format-specific optical laser or read-layer problem is possible. |
| Games and DVDs work but Blu-rays fail | Check the Blu-ray app, movie region, disc layer, and another movie disc. |
| Discs are accepted but never spin | A motor, spindle, sensor, or drive-mechanism fault is possible. |
| The drive clicks or grinds | Stop repeated testing; mechanical damage is likely. |
| The console repeatedly ejects discs | Loading alignment, sensor, or drive-mechanism trouble is possible. |
These tests are more useful than trying the same disc repeatedly: they show whether the fault follows the disc or stays with the console. See iFixit’s disc-reading troubleshooting guidance.

3. Perform a complete power cycle
- Remove the disc.
- Hold the Xbox power button on the console for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down completely.
- Unplug the power cable and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the console on.
- Insert the disc and test again.
This is a hard shutdown, not a factory reset. It does not delete installed games or saved data.

4. Try Energy-saving power mode
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Go to General > Power options or General > Power Mode & Start-Up.
- Select Energy-saving.
- Shut the console down fully with the physical power button, restart it, and test the disc.
Dashboard labels can vary. If the path differs, search Settings for Power options. Energy-saving mode followed by a full shutdown is listed by iFixit as a possible remedy for a temporary software state; it is not a guaranteed fix for a damaged drive.
5. Install pending console updates
Go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates. Install any available update, restart the console, and test again. Microsoft’s Xbox troubleshooting guidance also directs users to check this update area (Microsoft support).
An update may correct a dashboard or app problem, but it cannot repair a worn laser, failed motor, damaged spindle, or misaligned mechanism.
6. If only movie discs fail, troubleshoot Blu-ray playback
If physical games work but movies do not:
- Make sure the Blu-ray Player app is installed and updated.
- Restart the app and the console.
- Test a DVD, standard Blu-ray, and 4K UHD Blu-ray separately.
- Test another movie disc before blaming the drive.
- Check whether the movie is compatible with the console’s market or region.
Movie-region restrictions should not be used to explain a game-disc failure, and changing the Xbox region will not necessarily unlock a region-restricted movie. Asurion discusses the Blu-ray app and movie compatibility as possible causes (Asurion’s troubleshooting guide).

7. Clear Blu-ray persistent storage
For Blu-ray-specific problems, an optional step is Settings > Devices & connections > Blu-ray > Persistent storage > Clear persistent storage. The labels may differ on your dashboard. This menu path comes from Microsoft Community guidance, not a universal fix for game discs (Microsoft Community).
8. Reset while keeping games and apps
If multiple known-good discs still fail after the earlier steps, make one final software-level test:
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
- Select Reset console.
- Choose Reset and keep my games & apps.
- Follow the prompts, sign in again, and test the drive.
This keeps installed games and apps but removes accounts and settings. Locally stored data that has not synchronized may also be lost, so make sure important saves are synchronized before proceeding. Do not choose Reset and remove everything unless you are preparing to sell, recycle, or replace the console.
How to remove a stuck disc safely
- Press the physical eject button.
- If the disc appears on the dashboard, highlight it and choose eject.
- If the console is frozen, hold the power button for 10 seconds, restart, and try ejecting again.
- If it remains stuck, unplug the console completely and do not insert another disc.
- Only as a last resort, use the model-specific manual-eject opening on the underside near the circular stand.
- With the console unplugged, use a suitable straightened paper clip—iFixit specifies approximately 5 cm / 2 inches or longer—and pull the disc out gently using a lint-free cloth.
Do not pry through the slot or force the mechanism. Manual ejection removes the disc but does not repair the underlying fault. If the disc is being scratched or the drive grinds, arrange service instead of repeatedly extracting it.

When the disc drive probably needs repair
Service is the sensible next step when several known-good discs fail, no disc produces any response, discs spin for a long time and then error, or the drive clicks, grinds, scrapes, buzzes, or repeatedly ejects discs. A format-specific failure—such as DVDs working while Blu-ray-based games fail—can indicate a weakening optical subsystem, but it is an inference rather than a confirmed diagnosis.
Before opening the console, check coverage at account.microsoft.com/devices:
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox.
- Register the console if necessary using its serial number.
- Check the warranty status.
- Select the Xbox and request service if the option is available.
Microsoft’s warranty and service-order guidance explains the process. Availability, shipping, terms, and charges vary by country or region. Record the serial number, purchase date, tested disc formats, error messages, unusual noises, and whether the console has been opened or damaged.

Usually not unless you already have console-repair experience. According to iFixit’s replacement guide, the original drive controller board is software-linked to the console motherboard. A replacement procedure therefore involves transferring the original board and soldering two wires; it is not necessarily a plug-and-play parts swap.

Self-repair may make sense only for an out-of-warranty console when you have the correct tools, ESD precautions, soldering skills, a compatible replacement assembly, and the willingness to risk making the console unusable. Otherwise, compare a Microsoft service quote with a reputable local repair quote. Replace the console only after considering its age, other faults, repair cost, and the value of retaining a physical-disc drive.
What not to do
- Do not spray liquid or compressed air directly into the drive.
- Do not open the console to clean the laser before completing the low-risk tests and checking warranty coverage.
- Do not repeatedly insert and eject a valuable or damaged disc.
- Do not assume that downloading a game from the Store permanently replaces the physical disc license; disc-based games may still require the disc when launching.
- Do not assume every backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Xbox Series X read DVDs but not games?
That pattern can indicate a format-specific optical laser or read-layer problem, although a damaged or incompatible game disc remains possible. Test several known-good games before arranging repair.
Can I clean the Xbox Series X laser without opening it?
Do not spray cleaner or compressed air into the drive. Clean the disc first; internal lens cleaning requires disassembly and can cause further damage.
Can I use an external USB disc drive with Xbox Series X?
The supplied troubleshooting evidence does not establish an external USB drive as a supported replacement for the built-in disc drive, so do not rely on one as a guaranteed workaround.
Does resetting the console delete installed games?
The option “Reset and keep my games & apps” preserves installed games and apps, but removes accounts and settings and may remove unsynchronized local data. “Reset and remove everything” erases the console.
