Short answer: no. A South Korean certification confirmed that Microsoft had registered an Xbox development kit in March 2024, but it did not confirm a more powerful Xbox Series X Pro. Microsoft’s June 2024 hardware announcement instead revealed storage, design and disc-drive revisions that retained the existing consoles’ “same speed and performance.”
What the Korean listing actually confirmed
On March 18, 2024, South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency database listed a Microsoft device described as an “XDK Console”, with model number 2089. The listing was reported the following day by T3.

“XDK” refers to an Xbox Development Kit: hardware supplied to game developers for creating and testing Xbox software. The certification therefore established that Microsoft had a development kit approved for use in South Korea. It did not identify a retail console, reveal its specifications or prove that a new consumer product was close to launch.
That distinction matters. A development kit can be associated with a revised motherboard, chassis, storage configuration, optical-drive change, manufacturing revision or internal testing platform. It can also support hardware that is later delayed, modified or cancelled. Regulatory certification is useful evidence that hardware exists, but it is not the same thing as a product announcement.

Why the listing triggered Xbox Series X Pro speculation
The timing made the rumour plausible. Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro was widely expected to arrive in 2024, creating interest in whether Microsoft would respond with a higher-performance Xbox. At the same time, leaked Microsoft planning documents had described a redesigned, all-digital Xbox Series X codenamed Brooklin.
A new development kit could reasonably suggest that developers needed to test a new Xbox configuration. Commentators then made a much larger leap: perhaps the kit was for a Series X Pro with a faster GPU, CPU or additional memory.
That leap was never supported by the listing itself. Model number 2089 did not disclose rendering performance, clock speeds, memory capacity, upscaling technology or a consumer name. The PS5 Pro rumours explained why readers were watching Xbox hardware closely, but they provided no evidence about Microsoft’s roadmap.

Brooklin was not the same thing as a Series X Pro
Brooklin was the codename used in leaked Microsoft planning material for a redesigned, all-digital Xbox Series X revision. The documents were not a final retail specification sheet, so leaked details such as its design, price or release timing should not be treated as guaranteed.

The broad distinction was more important than any individual leaked feature:
| Product idea | Expected focus | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Hypothetical Xbox Series X Pro | Higher graphics or processing performance | Unconfirmed rumour |
| Brooklin refresh | Redesigned, all-digital Series X with broadly equivalent performance | Leaked Microsoft planning material |
| Official 2024 Series X revisions | Different storage, designs and disc-drive options | Announced by Microsoft |
Coverage often treated these three ideas as interchangeable. They were not. A new XDK could have supported a Brooklin-style hardware revision without being evidence of a performance-focused console.
What Microsoft announced in June 2024
Microsoft resolved the immediate question at its June 9, 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. It announced three new Xbox Series X|S options for holiday 2024 in select markets, as detailed in the company’s official Xbox Wire announcement:

The 1TB all-digital Series X was announced at a US estimated retail price of $449.99. The 2TB Galaxy Black Series X was announced at $599.99 in the United States and was described as available in limited quantities.

- UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
Most importantly, Microsoft said the new options offered different “design, storage and price” choices while retaining the same speed and performance as the existing Xbox Series X|S lineup. That directly contradicts the idea that these were enhanced Series X Pro models.
Was there any performance upgrade?
No performance upgrade was announced for the 2024 refreshes. Microsoft did not present them with:
- A faster CPU
- A more powerful GPU
- Additional system memory
- Higher rendering targets
- A new upscaling feature comparable to the technology associated with the PS5 Pro
- A separate “Pro” performance tier or branding
The changes were practical rather than generational. The 1TB Digital Edition removed the disc drive and targeted buyers who purchase games digitally or use Game Pass. The 2TB Galaxy Black model doubled the built-in storage compared with the 1TB digital model while retaining a disc drive. The 1TB Series S added capacity without changing the console’s performance class.

What was the 2089 devkit probably for?
The safest interpretation is that the kit may have been related to a revised Xbox configuration, potentially including the digital Series X hardware later reflected in Microsoft’s 2024 lineup. The eventual announcement makes that explanation more consistent with the evidence than a Series X Pro theory.

However, the certification alone cannot distinguish between a storage change, disc-drive removal, manufacturing revision, chassis redesign or performance upgrade. It is also not possible to establish from the available evidence that model 2089 was definitively the development kit for one specific retail model.
Historical comparisons with earlier Xbox certification listings can make a launch seem imminent, but certification timelines vary by product, region and regulatory process. “A new devkit appeared” is evidence of development activity—not a guaranteed launch timetable.
How the 2024 Xbox models differed
| Model | Best suited to | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Series X 1TB Digital Edition | Digital-first buyers seeking Series X-class performance | No disc drive; unsuitable for physical games and UHD Blu-rays |
| Series X 2TB Galaxy Black | Players who want maximum built-in storage and physical-media support | Higher price and limited-quantity special-edition positioning |
| Series X 1TB disc-drive model | Players with physical games, used discs or UHD Blu-rays | Less built-in storage than the 2TB model |
| Series S 1TB | Budget buyers or secondary-room use | Not a substitute for Series X-level graphics performance |
Storage expansion may be an alternative to replacing a console, but its value depends on current expansion-card prices, compatibility and regional availability. Current prices and stock should be checked on the relevant official Xbox product page rather than inferred from old launch pricing.
What buyers should do
- Do not delay a purchase solely because of the 2089 listing. It did not confirm a Series X Pro, and Microsoft’s 2024 refreshes were performance-equivalent revisions.
- Choose a disc-drive Series X if you own physical games, shop used or want UHD Blu-ray playback.
- Choose the 1TB Digital Edition if you buy digitally and prefer the lower announced entry price, but accept the loss of disc support.
- Choose the 2TB model if built-in storage and a disc drive justify its higher cost. Availability and pricing can change, particularly because Microsoft announced in June 2026 that the model would be sunset from August 1, 2026; verify live regional stock before buying.
- Choose Series S for a lower-cost entry point, not because it offers a Pro-style graphics upgrade.
What happened to the Xbox Series X Pro idea?
There is no sourced basis to say that Microsoft formally cancelled a Series X Pro. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Microsoft did not announce or release one as part of its 2024 hardware refresh.
Best Value
The real 2024 lineup expansion focused on storage, design and digital-versus-physical choices. By 2026, Xbox’s official hardware messaging had shifted toward Project Helix, described as the next generation of Xbox rather than a mid-generation Series X Pro.
Retrospective verdict
The March 2024 report was based on a genuine Korean certification. The mistake was treating the existence of an Xbox development kit as proof of a faster retail console.
The evidence supports three separate conclusions:
- Microsoft had certified an XDK Console, model 2089, in South Korea.
- The listing was compatible with a redesigned or revised Xbox, including the leaked Brooklin concept, but did not reveal its performance.
- Microsoft’s actual 2024 products were storage, design and disc-drive revisions with the same stated speed and performance as the existing lineup.
So the headline rumour looked promising, but the result was not an Xbox Series X Pro. It was a broader Series X|S lineup—and the official successor now being discussed is next-generation Xbox hardware, not a confirmed Pro revision.
