Microsoft’s second Xbox console price increase of 2025 pushed the standard Xbox Series X from $599.99 to $649.99 in the United States. The increase was announced on September 19, 2025, and took effect on October 3, 2025. It was a separate, $50 adjustment—not a $150 increase in October—and applied to U.S. consoles only.
The $649 figure commonly used in headlines means $649.99 before sales tax. Because this is a historical October 2025 price change, it should not be treated as a verified current U.S. retail price for 2026.

The full 2025 timeline: $499.99 to $649.99
The October increase was the second Xbox console-price increase of 2025. The standard Series X’s progression was:
- Before May 2025: $499.99
- After the May 2025 adjustment: $599.99
- After the October 3, 2025 adjustment: $649.99
That means the Series X rose by $150 overall from its pre-May price to its October price. The $150 represents roughly a 30% increase, calculated as $150 divided by $499.99. The October change itself was $50, or approximately five months after the preceding increase.
Microsoft’s May 2025 pricing update documents the earlier adjustment. Keeping the two events separate matters: saying that the Series X “rose by $150 in October” would be incorrect.

Why did Microsoft raise Xbox prices?
Microsoft publicly described the reason as “changes in the macroeconomic environment.” That is the confirmed explanation from Microsoft; it did not publicly identify tariffs as the sole cause in the cited announcement.
Reuters reported the increase in the context of tariff-related uncertainty, import costs, supply-chain expenses, and pressure on hardware margins. In that context, tariffs were a reported economic driver and likely part of the pricing decision—but the evidence does not support presenting them as the only confirmed cause.
| Claim | How to describe it |
|---|---|
| Prices changed on October 3, 2025 | Confirmed; state directly. |
| Microsoft cited macroeconomic changes | Confirmed; attribute to Microsoft. |
| Tariffs and supply-chain costs added pressure | Reported context from Reuters and industry coverage. |
| Tariffs alone caused the increase | Not established; do not state as fact. |
The October round was U.S.-specific. Reuters reported that the adjustment did not represent a matching increase for Xbox consoles in other markets, and controllers and headsets were not included in the U.S. console-price change cited in that coverage. The May increase affected multiple international markets and a broader range of Xbox products, so the two announcements should not be treated as identical.

What the higher price meant for Xbox’s value
Series X versus PS5
At the time of the October announcement, Reuters reported a U.S. PS5 price of $549.99. On that dated comparison, the standard PS5 was listed at $100 less than the $649.99 Series X.
That does not make the PS5 automatically the better purchase. The relevant choice depends on game libraries, exclusive titles, subscriptions, controller preferences, and whether the buyer needs Xbox backward compatibility. The $549.99 PS5 figure belongs to the 2025 comparison and should not be presented as a verified 2026 price without checking the current model and listing.
Series X versus Series S
The Series S remained the lower-cost route into Xbox and Game Pass. It suits buyers using a smaller display, a secondary television, or an entirely digital library. It offers less graphical performance and storage than the Series X, and neither Series S model has a disc drive.
Recommended Free Tools
The 512GB Series S is particularly constrained for players who keep several large games installed. Expansion storage can materially increase total ownership cost, so the console’s lower MSRP should not be the only figure in the budget.

Series X versus a gaming PC
A PC offers access to multiple storefronts, mods, productivity software, and future upgrades. It can be the more flexible choice for someone who already owns a suitable monitor, peripherals, and some components.
But a generic “$600 PC” comparison is not enough to establish superior value. A credible comparison must include the graphics card, processor, memory, storage, case, power supply, Wi-Fi, operating system, controller, display, and warranty. Component prices and performance also vary substantially. The Series X remains simpler and more predictable as a fixed-cost living-room system, even if a PC may offer broader capabilities.
Who should still consider the Series X?
- Existing Xbox owners: An established digital library, achievements, saves, and ecosystem account can make switching platforms expensive or inconvenient.
- Frequent Game Pass users: The subscription can improve the value calculation for players who would otherwise buy several games, although subscription fees are separate from the console MSRP and can change.
- Physical-game buyers: The standard Series X’s disc drive supports physical Xbox games and 4K Blu-ray media. It can also matter to people who buy used discs or borrow games.
- Performance-focused Xbox shoppers: The Series X is the stronger current Xbox console compared with the Series S.
- Convenience-first players: A console avoids the hardware selection, Windows setup, driver management, and upgrade decisions associated with a gaming PC.
When an alternative makes more sense
- Choose a Series S if the priority is the lowest entry cost, digital games are acceptable, and maximum resolution and storage are not important.
- Consider a PS5 if Sony’s games, ecosystem, or controller are more appealing—or if the current price of the comparable model is lower. Check live pricing rather than relying on the 2025 figure.
- Consider a PC if mods, PC storefronts, productivity, upgradeability, or an existing PC setup matter more than plug-and-play console simplicity.
- Wait for a sale, bundle, refurbished unit, or used console if there is no urgent need to buy. For refurbished or used hardware, check the warranty, return policy, seller reputation, controller condition, and disc-drive operation.
The price is only the starting cost
The console MSRP does not capture the complete ownership budget. Buyers should account for:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Local sales tax.
- Expansion storage, especially for Series S models.
- Additional controllers for multiplayer.
- Game purchases or an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
- The difference between physical ownership and digital purchases.
- Warranty coverage and possible replacement costs.
Digital-only hardware can be cheaper upfront, but it leaves the buyer dependent on Microsoft Store pricing and promotions. A disc-equipped Series X can cost more at checkout while offering access to used games, disc borrowing, and physical media.

What the increase said about the console market
Sony had also raised U.S. PlayStation 5 prices by approximately $50 in August 2025, according to Reuters. Reuters reported that Sony had sold 80.3 million PS5 consoles by August 2025. Microsoft did not disclose comparable Xbox Series shipment figures in the cited coverage.
Some ninth-generation sales totals and Xbox shipment figures circulated as estimates, but estimates based on broader market data are not official Microsoft shipment disclosures. They should not be used to declare that Xbox was “losing the console war” without current, comparable market-share evidence.
Bottom line for buyers
Microsoft’s October 3, 2025 U.S. increase made the Xbox Series X substantially less attractive on upfront price: the standard model reached $649.99, $150 above its pre-May 2025 MSRP. That put it above the contemporaneous listed PS5 price and made the Series S, sales, refurbished stock, and alternative platforms more important to consider.
