Xbox Series X is the media-capable choice if you need physical discs: drive-equipped models play UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and audio CD media. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot play any optical disc. Both consoles support major streaming apps, 4K video on compatible services, Dolby Vision in supported games and streaming content, Dolby Atmos with compatible equipment, and local-media options—but none of these features is universal across every app, title, region, television, receiver, or subscription tier.

In practical terms, Series X can combine gaming, streaming, and UHD Blu-ray in one box. Series S is better understood as a digital gaming and streaming console. Neither is a complete replacement for a dedicated streaming box or home-theater disc player in every setup.

Microsoft lists the drive-equipped Series X’s UHD Blu-ray capability, Dolby Vision media streaming, Dolby Atmos, and HDMI features on its official product page. The model distinction matters: check the exact retail edition, because a digital Series X variant would not provide the same disc functionality.

What Series X can play

Streaming video and live services

Xbox supports a broad app ecosystem rather than one universal catalog. Depending on your country and the current Microsoft Store lineup, examples include Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, Hulu, YouTube, Plex, Kodi, and broadcaster or live-TV apps. Published platform coverage also identifies Spotify and other entertainment apps.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 4K Gaming, 120FPS, Carbon Black
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Installing an app does not include its subscription. Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and similar services require separate accounts or plans, and availability varies by region. A service’s Xbox app may restrict 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, or surround sound to particular titles, plans, devices, or connection paths. Internet speed, congestion, and provider-side limits can also reduce quality.

Older testing found that Xbox media apps did not always benefit from the same rapid-resume behavior as games; switching between them could require a conventional app launch. That behavior can change with console and app updates, so it should not be treated as a permanent platform limitation.

UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and CD

A drive-equipped Series X can play UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, and audio CD media. The Blu-ray Player app may need to be downloaded from the Microsoft Store before first playback.

Disc playback is convenient, but Series X is not equivalent to a premium dedicated player. Published testing identifies HDR10 rather than Dolby Vision for UHD Blu-ray playback. That is the crucial distinction: Dolby Vision support for compatible streaming and games does not automatically extend to physical UHD Blu-ray discs.

Disc playback can also depend on region compatibility, the condition of the disc, the player app, console software, and the display’s HDCP/HDMI path. Internet access may be needed for app installation, updates, and some disc-related functions.

What Series S can play

Series S has no optical drive. It cannot play UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, or audio CD discs, and a USB optical drive does not turn it into a disc player. Its media features are digital: streaming services, digital purchases, compatible USB or network files, music apps, and other downloaded applications.

Series S can stream compatible 4K video even though its gaming performance target is lower than Series X. That does not make it equivalent to Series X for native game rendering, UHD Blu-ray, or physical-media collections. If discs matter now or may matter later, the drive-equipped Series X—or a separate player—is the safer choice.

4K, HDR10, and Dolby Vision: what actually works

“Xbox supports Dolby Vision” is incomplete. On Series X|S, the format has three separate contexts:

  • Streaming: Dolby Vision can work in compatible apps and titles when the subscription, console, television, and HDMI chain support it.
  • Gaming: Dolby Vision gaming is supported for compatible games and displays. Xbox announced the feature for Series X|S in 2021 alongside support for display features such as ALLM and VRR where the television qualifies.
  • UHD Blu-ray: Do not assume Dolby Vision disc playback. Published testing reports HDR10 as the relevant HDR mode for Series X UHD Blu-ray playback.

HDR10 is more broadly available than Dolby Vision, but the result still depends on the title and the entire signal chain. A Dolby Vision television can correctly show HDR10—or SDR—when the content or app does not provide Dolby Vision.

To inspect what the console detects, open Settings > General > TV & display options and select 4K TV details. Xbox’s Dolby Vision announcement documents this diagnostics area, although menu wording can change with system updates.

Audio: Atmos, TrueHD, and the missing optical port

Series X|S sends audio over HDMI and supports Dolby Atmos with compatible games, video, apps, soundbars, receivers, and connection paths. Microsoft also lists Dolby TrueHD with Atmos among Series X audio capabilities. The console offering an Atmos setting does not prove that your receiver is receiving an Atmos signal: the content, app, output mode, HDMI route, and equipment must all support it.

Atmos for speakers through an HDMI-connected soundbar or AV receiver is different from Dolby Atmos for Headphones. Headphone use may involve the Dolby Access app and a separate license. A published report cited a one-time $15 license, but that price is historical and should be checked in the current app before purchase.

  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

Series X|S does not include the optical S/PDIF output found on some earlier Xbox hardware. If your soundbar or headset accepts only optical audio, alternatives include routing HDMI audio through the television, receiver, or soundbar; using a compatible USB or wireless headset; or adding an HDMI audio extractor. Extractors can introduce HDCP, format, latency, or compatibility compromises.

USB, DLNA, OneDrive, Plex, and Kodi

Published testing reports that Series X can play media from USB storage and access media shared from a PC over DLNA after installing the free Media Player app. OneDrive access and background music through supported apps have also been reported. Series S can use the same general digital-media approach.

Do not interpret this as universal file playback. A file that works on a PC may fail on Xbox because of its container, video or audio codec, subtitle format, DRM, storage format, or network-share compatibility. The supplied evidence does not establish a current exhaustive codec table, so test a known-compatible file rather than assuming every MKV, audio track, or subtitle will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex or Kodi may be more convenient for larger libraries, provided the relevant app and server setup support your files. In every case, “the console can see the file” and “the console can decode and play the file” are separate questions.

Music and multitasking

Supported music apps such as Spotify can continue playing while you browse the dashboard or play games. Playback controls are available through the Xbox Guide, according to published testing. This is app-dependent: not every music service supports background playback, and game audio mixing, controls, and behavior can change after updates. Music streaming also uses network bandwidth while you play.

HDMI-CEC and what Xbox no longer does

Series X|S can send video and audio through HDMI and participate in compatible HDMI-CEC power or input behavior. A controller or compatible media remote can handle navigation, and modern setups can place the console alongside a television, receiver, or soundbar.

  • HDMI input and cable-box pass-through.
  • IR-blaster control for legacy equipment.
  • OneGuide television listings.
  • Built-in optical audio output.

Xbox cannot accept a cable box’s HDMI signal, act as a cable DVR, or universally control older equipment by infrared. It is a modern streaming-and-gaming hub, not a replacement for a tuner or cable box.

How to set up Xbox as a media device

  1. Connect the console directly to a suitable HDMI input on the TV, AV receiver, or soundbar. Direct connection is especially useful when troubleshooting HDR, Dolby Vision, or Atmos.
  2. Install system updates and confirm that the television input has its enhanced, deep-color, or HDR mode enabled where required.
  3. Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details and review the detected capabilities.
  4. Install the required streaming app from the Microsoft Store, sign in, and verify that your subscription tier includes the desired quality.
  5. On a drive-equipped Series X, install or update Blu-ray Player if prompted, then test a known-good disc.
  6. For local media, install or open Media Player, connect USB storage or configure the network share, and start with a file known to be compatible.
  7. For Atmos, configure the console’s audio output and confirm the received format on the soundbar or receiver. Do not rely only on an Atmos option appearing in Xbox settings.

Troubleshooting common media problems

“My Series S will not play a Blu-ray.”

This is expected. Series S has no optical drive and cannot play any disc. Use a digital version, streaming service, Series X, or another disc-capable player.

“My Series X does not recognize a movie disc.”

Install or update Blu-ray Player, restart the console, inspect the disc, and test a known-good disc. Check regional compatibility. If the console recognizes the disc but the TV shows an error or blank screen, bypass HDMI switches, capture devices, and other intermediaries and test a direct connection.

“My Dolby Vision TV shows HDR10.”

Check whether the specific app and title support Dolby Vision, whether your account tier includes it, and whether the TV input and HDMI chain support the required format. Also check refresh-rate compatibility and the console’s 4K TV details page. HDR10 may be the correct result for unsupported content or UHD Blu-ray.

“The soundbar says multichannel PCM instead of Atmos.”

Confirm that the title and app provide Atmos, the soundbar or receiver supports it, and the HDMI route can carry it. Review Xbox audio settings, bypass an extractor or switch, and test another known-supported title. Do not confuse speaker-based Atmos with the separate headphone license.

“I need optical audio.”

There is no built-in optical output. Use HDMI through compatible equipment, a compatible USB or wireless headset, or an appropriately supported extractor while accepting possible format and latency trade-offs.

“My media file works on my PC but not Xbox.”

Check the file’s codec, container, audio track, subtitles, DRM, storage format, and network-share compatibility. Try a known-compatible file or use a properly configured Plex/Kodi setup rather than assuming the console supports every PC media format.

Is Series X a good 4K Blu-ray player?

Yes for convenience; no as a universal enthusiast solution. Series X is a sensible combined device if you already want Xbox gaming and need UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and CD playback. It avoids buying a second box and handles mainstream disc playback alongside streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dedicated UHD Blu-ray player is preferable when physical media is the priority, Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray is essential, quieter operation and disc-specific controls matter, or your audio/video system exposes the console’s missing optical output as a problem. Series X’s disc capability is useful, but it should not be marketed as identical to a specialist player.

Which device makes sense for each buyer?

  • Streaming-only household: First compare the Xbox apps with the smart-TV platform you already own. A dedicated streaming box may offer a simpler remote-first interface and lower complexity.
  • Xbox gamer with physical movies: Choose a drive-equipped Series X or keep a separate UHD Blu-ray player.
  • Digital gamer who also streams: Series S can be a good fit if you accept that every physical game, movie, and CD is excluded.
  • Physical-media collector: Prefer Series X for convenience, but choose a dedicated player if Dolby Vision discs, specialist controls, or the best disc experience matter.
  • Home-theater user: Verify the television, receiver or soundbar, HDMI cables and switches, app, content, and subscription together. The console alone cannot guarantee Dolby Vision or Atmos.
  • Owner of optical-only audio equipment: Plan for HDMI routing, a compatible headset, or an extractor before buying.
  • Local-media enthusiast: Treat Xbox as a capable but format-dependent client. A dedicated Plex/Kodi setup or another media platform may be more predictable for a large library.

Bottom line

Choose Series X when you want one console for Xbox gaming, streaming, and physical movie or music discs. Choose Series S when your media use is digital and you want streaming alongside digital gaming; do not buy it expecting a Blu-ray workaround. Both support modern 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Atmos scenarios, but only when the app, content, subscription, display, audio equipment, and HDMI chain all qualify. For serious UHD Blu-ray or streaming-first setups, a dedicated player may still be the better tool.
