“The program can’t start because xboxnetapisvc.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” If Windows reports that xboxnetapisvc.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, use the repair path below instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
- Several Windows, Xbox, or Game Pass applications fail: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only Xbox, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or Game Pass is affected: repair or reset those apps.
- Only one game fails: verify, repair, or reinstall that game through its launcher.
- The file was quarantined: check your security software and verify the file’s Microsoft signature and location.
- The file exists but still fails: check Windows architecture, dependencies, servicing health, and the application named in the error.
- The error began after a driver or hardware change: update Windows and inspect the relevant device in Device Manager.
XboxNetApiSvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Xbox Live Networking Service. The related service is XboxNetApiSvc, which supports the Windows.Networking.XboxLive API. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or general-purpose third-party runtime.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave a protected Windows component damaged or missing.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on it.
- Try the affected Xbox app or game again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If Windows Update fails, restart once and try again. If it repeatedly fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not substitute a random downloaded DLL. Use a matching Windows installation or another Microsoft-supported repair source, then run DISM again. Persistent component-store failures may require an in-place Windows repair.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition and show what needs attention, while repair actions are completed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows’ built-in commands remain the primary repair path.
3. Repair Xbox, Gaming Services, or Microsoft Store
If the error affects only Xbox or Store-installed software, the Windows file may be intact while the app installation or its servicing registration is damaged.
Repair the Xbox or Gaming Services app
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox or Gaming Services.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the app.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the computer and test the app.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset. Resetting can remove the app’s local data or sign-in state, so be prepared to sign in again.
Repeat these steps for Microsoft Store if it appears in Installed apps. Not every Windows application provides Advanced options.

Update Microsoft Store applications
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Let Xbox, Gaming Services, and related applications update.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft has also documented a Gaming Services procedure for specific Windows 10 installation errors such as 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F. That procedure is not a universal fix for every xboxnetapisvc.dll error, so use it only when the matching Gaming Services problem is present.
4. Repair or reinstall the affected game
When one game fails but Windows and other Xbox applications work, repair the game before changing system files.
- Open the game launcher that installed the title.
- Open the game’s settings, properties, or manage screen.
- Choose Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
For a Microsoft Store or Xbox installation:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected game.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If necessary, select Reset or uninstall and reinstall the game.
A failed verification or incomplete installation can expose a missing dependency even when the Windows copy of XboxNetApiSvc.dll is healthy. The correct repair target is the game or app identified in the error, not a manually downloaded system DLL.
5. Check security software quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file, or malware can create a similarly named file in an unsafe directory.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
XboxNetApiSvc.dll. - Check the reported file path, detection name, and signature information.
Restore a quarantined file only when it is Microsoft-signed and located in an expected Windows directory. Scan the computer first and investigate why the file was quarantined. If the file is outside a Windows-managed directory, treat it as suspicious rather than automatically restoring it.

6. Confirm the file location and architecture
The component is normally protected by Windows and associated with:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit Windows components may also be associated with:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
The correct location depends on Windows architecture and servicing. Do not move the file between these directories.

A 32-bit game can require a 32-bit dependency even on 64-bit Windows. Likewise, a file copied from another Windows build may produce messages such as “not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image.”
To check your system type:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Read System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
To inspect a file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
XboxNetApiSvc.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
There is no single universal version, size, hash, or architecture for this file. Those details vary by Windows release and build. Historical file databases can help identify a name, but they are not safe sources for obtaining replacement binaries.
7. Update relevant drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of this Windows DLL, so do not begin by reinstalling every driver. Consider this step when the error started after a graphics, network, chipset, or hardware change, or when Device Manager shows a fault.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters, Display adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for available driver updates. Prefer Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel.

Do not register or copy the DLL manually
Do not run:
regsvr32 xboxnetapisvc.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that XboxNetApiSvc.dll should be manually registered. The command may produce an entry-point error and will not repair a missing Windows component.
Do not download the file and copy it into:
System32SysWOW64- A game folder
- The Xbox or Gaming Services installation directory
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows-build version, or a file that does not address the actual missing dependency. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft Store repair, Xbox app repair, game verification, or a supported Windows recovery source instead.

Collect these details before taking more invasive action:

- The application path
- Your Windows version and build
- Whether the file exists and where
- The final DISM result
- The final SFC result
- Any quarantine or Event Viewer entry
If the failure began after a known update or software installation and a restore point exists, use System Restore. If Windows files continue to disappear after repair, check disk health, run a full security scan, and inspect Event Viewer or CBS logs.
An in-place Windows repair can preserve personal files while rebuilding damaged system components. Resetting or reinstalling Windows is a last resort after backups, updates, DISM, SFC, app repair, and recovery options have failed.

FAQ
Is xboxnetapisvc.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Xbox Live Networking Service and the XboxNetApiSvc Windows service.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. It is a Windows component. Install or repair those runtimes only when the complete application error identifies one of them separately.

Does a stopped XboxNetApiSvc service prove the DLL is broken?
No. The service and DLL are related but not equivalent. The service is normally configured for manual start and can activate when required. Do not force it to Automatic without a reason.
Why does Windows say “The specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
That message can mean a dependency of the named DLL is missing. Check the full error, application path, architecture, component-store health, and Event Viewer.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. Restore Windows components through Microsoft-supported repair methods, or repair the Xbox, Gaming Services, Store, or game installation that is failing.
What if only one game reports the error?
Verify or repair that game, then reinstall it if verification fails. A game-specific failure usually does not justify replacing a protected Windows file.
