mfps.dll errors usually appear when Windows or an application cannot load the Media Foundation Proxy DLL. The message may say “mfps.dll was not found,” “mfps.dll is missing,” or “mfps.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
mfps.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Media Foundation, the platform that supports audio, video, cameras, codecs, capture, and related media functions. Microsoft lists it in the Media Foundation package at %windir%System32mfps.dll.Microsoft’s Media Foundation overview and package file list
Do not download an isolated copy from a DLL website or replace System32 manually. First determine whether the problem affects Windows itself, a Windows N edition, or only one application.
Use this order:
- Check whether you have Windows 10 or 11 N and install Media Feature Pack if necessary.
- Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Check antivirus quarantine, file location, architecture, and recent system changes.
- Use recovery or an in-place Windows repair if component repair cannot restore the installation.
mfps.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or ordinary third-party game DLL. Installing those packages is not the default fix.

What causes the error
The exact message does not identify the cause by itself. It can indicate:
- The file is missing from the Windows component installation.
- Media Foundation files are corrupt or were removed.
- A Windows N edition does not have Media Feature Pack installed.
- One application has an incomplete or damaged installation.
- A 32-bit or 64-bit dependency is being loaded from the wrong location.
- Antivirus software quarantined a file.
- Another Media Foundation dependency is missing even though
mfps.dllexists. - A recent update, cleanup operation, feature installation, or system change damaged the component.
There is no single application that can be treated as the canonical source of every mfps.dll error. The useful distinction is whether one program fails or multiple media applications fail.
Check the edition and file path first
Confirm whether you have Windows N
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Under Windows specifications, read the Edition entry.
If it ends in N, media technologies are excluded from that Windows edition. If it says Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education without the N suffix, Media Feature Pack is not normally the solution.
Check for the Windows copy
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
mfps.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system DLLs. The 32-bit system location is %windir%SysWOW64, despite the confusing name.Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA copy elsewhere, such as inside a game folder or a random download directory, should not automatically be trusted. Check the file’s Properties > Digital Signatures tab and confirm that its location and Microsoft signature make sense. A file named mfps.dll outside the Windows component directories may belong to an application, be an old copy, or be unsafe.
Fix 1: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N
This is the correct first fix when media playback, camera access, DRM, codecs, or a game fails on Windows N.
Windows 11 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it, choose Next, then select Install.
- Restart Windows after installation, even if Windows does not request a restart.
Windows 10 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Choose Media Feature Pack.
- Select Install, then restart the computer.
Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions cover both Windows 10 N and Windows 11 N.
Try the affected application again. If the feature is not listed, verify the edition again, install pending Windows updates, and make sure Windows Update can download optional features. Installing Media Feature Pack on a non-N edition is not the normal repair path.

Use this when mfps.dll is missing from System32, several media applications fail, or the error began after an update, cleanup, failed feature installation, or security action.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by Windows protection repairs.
- Run SFC next:
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application again.
Run DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and retest. If it reports no integrity violations, that only means protected Windows files passed the check; it does not prove that the affected application or another dependency is installed correctly. Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems involved here and show what needs attention; its repair features are handled by the full version, but reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when the fault is application-specific.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one application fails while Windows media apps, video playback, and camera functions work, suspect that application first.
Microsoft Store or packaged applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
The Repair button preserves the application’s data where supported. If it does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data and settings.
Traditional desktop programs
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
- Restart if requested.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer, the Microsoft Store, or the game launcher that supplied it. Do not copy a Windows mfps.dll into the application folder unless the publisher’s installer specifically manages that file.
For games, open the launcher and use Verify integrity, Verify files, or Scan and repair. This is appropriate when the error points to a file inside the game’s own directory. It does not replace DISM and SFC when the expected file is C:WindowsSystem32mfps.dll.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not always load dependencies from the same system location. On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit system files are normally under
C:WindowsSystem32. - 32-bit system files are normally under
C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Do not replace a 64-bit Windows file with a 32-bit download, or use an application copy to overwrite the Windows copy. A file can exist and still fail to load because it has the wrong architecture or because another dependency is incompatible.
Check the application’s documentation or installer to determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. If only an older 32-bit program fails, repairing or reinstalling that program is safer than manually moving system files.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected file.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
mfps.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect the path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it. Restore it only when the location, Microsoft digital signature, and source are trustworthy. If Windows Security identifies malware, leave the item quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. Microsoft explains these actions in its Protection History guidance.
After addressing the detection, run DISM and SFC rather than relying on a restored isolated file.
Fix 6: Install updates or use recovery
If the error started immediately after Windows Update, a feature installation, disk cleanup, or another major system change:

- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the timing clearly points to a recent change, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, and review the available recovery options. System Restore can return system files and settings to an earlier restore point without serving as a substitute for application repair. Microsoft provides recovery options and System Restore documentation.

If SFC repeatedly cannot repair files, use the Microsoft guidance for reinstalling the current Windows version in place rather than downloading individual DLLs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not start with regsvr32
regsvr32 registers certain DLLs that expose registration functions. Some mfps.dll builds have been observed to export proxy-DLL registration functions, and Microsoft documents registration for proxy DLLs generally.Microsoft’s proxy-DLL registration documentation
That does not make registration the normal remedy. Running:
regsvr32 mfps.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair the Windows component store, correct a wrong architecture, or restore another missing dependency. It can also produce an error that obscures the original problem. Use DISM, SFC, Media Feature Pack, or the application’s official repair process instead.
Should you update drivers
A camera, audio, or graphics driver can cause a broader media failure, but a driver update is not the primary fix for a missing Windows component.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers when checking them one by one is impractical; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for mfps.dll, and Windows component or application repair remains the correct path when those are the source of the error.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
An isolated download can have:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A missing dependency set.
- An invalid or absent Microsoft signature.
- Malware or unwanted modifications.
- No relationship to the application that is actually failing.
Copying it into System32 or the application directory may silence one message while leaving Media Foundation damaged. Use Windows Optional Features, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application publisher’s installer, or a verified Defender recovery instead.
FAQ
Is mfps.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Its description is Media Foundation Proxy DLL, and it belongs to the Windows Media Foundation platform. A copy outside the expected Windows or application location still requires verification.
Is it malware?
The filename alone does not prove safety or malware. Check the full path and digital signature. A Microsoft-signed copy in the Windows component directory is consistent with the genuine system file; an unsigned copy in an unexpected folder deserves investigation.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the default response. mfps.dll is a Media Foundation component. Install those runtimes only when the affected application specifically requires them and its official documentation identifies that requirement.
Why does the error remain when mfps.dll exists?
Another Media Foundation dependency may be missing, the file may have the wrong architecture, the application may be damaged, or the file may be corrupt. Check the path, signature, application architecture, Event Viewer, and the full loader message.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Where is the 32-bit copy?
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system DLLs are normally stored in %windir%SysWOW64; 64-bit system DLLs are normally stored in %windir%System32.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the Windows edition and build, application name, complete error text, expected and actual file path, whether mfps.dll exists, its digital-signature result, any Event Viewer entry, and whether one program or several media applications fail.
