Microsoft is building a next-generation Xbox, but the original headline gets two important details wrong. The company has confirmed that developer versions of its next hardware, known as Project Helix, are planned for 2027 and that the system is being designed to play both console and PC games. It has not confirmed a 2027 retail launch, a full desktop version of Windows, or the removal of a $60 annual online-multiplayer fee.
That $60 figure comes from the 2023 launch price of Xbox Game Pass Core. Xbox’s current U.S. store presentation uses the Essential name and lists quarterly billing instead, so the number is historical context—not a confirmed current or future standard price.

What Microsoft actually announced
Microsoft announced Project Helix during GDC 2026 on March 11. The company says it is developing the next generation of Xbox hardware and plans to send alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a meaningful milestone, but “developer alpha hardware” does not mean consumers will be able to buy the finished console in 2027.

Microsoft has not announced a retail release date, final product name, consumer specifications, or price. Reporting has discussed late 2027 as a possible or best-case target, but it is not a locked public launch date. The official announcement is best understood as confirmation that development is underway and that developers will receive early hardware in 2027.

The next Xbox is being designed to run both console and PC games. Microsoft is also bringing a more console-oriented Xbox mode to Windows 11, initially in select markets. Together, those announcements show a deliberate convergence between Xbox and Windows gaming rather than the abandonment of Xbox hardware.
Microsoft also points to Xbox Play Anywhere, which now covers more than 1,500 games according to its GDC announcement. For supported titles, the program can connect purchases and progress across Xbox, PC, and supported handheld experiences. That cross-device ecosystem is likely to become more important as the boundaries between Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and handhelds continue to blur.
Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement and its Windows announcement about the next Xbox are the strongest sources for what has actually been confirmed.
Does “Xbox is moving to Windows” mean a full Windows PC?
Not necessarily. The phrase can describe several different designs:
- Windows underneath an Xbox shell: The hardware could use Windows technology while booting into a controlled, controller-first Xbox interface. This would preserve the simplicity expected from a console without exposing the full desktop.
- A complete Windows PC in a console-shaped enclosure: Microsoft could offer desktop access, broader peripheral support, mods, multiple launchers, and ordinary Windows applications. Nothing official confirms that this is the plan.
- A shared Xbox and Windows gaming platform: Developers could target common technology and hardware architecture while Microsoft maintains different experiences on a console, PC, and handheld.
- Xbox mode on Windows devices: Windows PCs and handhelds may gain an Xbox-focused interface without existing Xbox consoles becoming ordinary PCs.
The available evidence supports Xbox/Windows convergence, not the claim that the next console will expose an unrestricted Windows desktop. Microsoft has not confirmed native Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, arbitrary Windows software, unrestricted file-system access, or a final operating-system design.

The current ROG Xbox Ally family illustrates Microsoft’s direction: Windows 11 hardware with an Xbox-oriented interface, access to a collective game library, and Xbox account synchronization. It is an example of the strategy, not proof that Project Helix will use identical hardware or software.
Where did the “$60 annual fee” come from?
The figure most likely refers to Xbox Live Gold’s successor, Game Pass Core. When Microsoft introduced Game Pass Core in 2023, it priced the plan at $9.99 per month or $59.99 per year. Core included online console multiplayer and a small catalog of games.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The old annual price should not be presented as Xbox’s confirmed current universal fee. The U.S. Xbox store currently presents the relevant entry as Game Pass Essential, although the legacy URL still contains “game-pass-core.” The page displays $24.99 per quarter, which would total approximately $99.96 over four quarters before taxes if renewed continuously.
Prices, names, billing options, promotions, and availability can vary by country, account, platform, and date. Microsoft has not announced that the next Xbox will eliminate paid online multiplayer for purchased games, nor has it announced a new $60 annual charge.
There is also an important exception already in place: free-to-play games such as Fortnite do not require a paid Xbox multiplayer subscription in the usual console cases. Xbox says supported free-to-play cloud games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. That does not mean online multiplayer for every paid console game is free.

On PC, console multiplayer subscription rules do not apply in the same way. A player using a Windows PC may buy a game or use PC Game Pass without paying for a console online-multiplayer plan, subject to the individual game, account, and service requirements.

How current Game Pass plans change the story
The subscription landscape is broader than the headline suggests. The following figures reflect the U.S. storefront signals in the supplied research and may change by region or over time:
| Plan | Displayed U.S. pricing | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | $24.99 per quarter | Console players seeking online multiplayer, 50-plus games, benefits, and cloud access |
| Game Pass Premium | $14.99 per month | Players wanting 200-plus games across console and PC, online multiplayer, and cloud gaming |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 per month | Windows players seeking 300-plus PC games, day-one releases, and EA Play |
| Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99 per month | Players using multiple devices who want 500-plus games, cloud gaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics |
Microsoft’s April 2026 Game Pass update says Ultimate was reduced from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 per month. It also says future Call of Duty games will no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch, instead arriving around the following holiday season. That change matters when calculating the value of a subscription: “day one” benefits are not identical for every major Xbox-owned release.
For the latest plan details, consult the Ultimate listing, the PC Game Pass page, and Microsoft’s April 2026 update. A subscription is most useful for someone who regularly plays from its catalog; it is less compelling for an occasional player who buys only a few games each year.

What a Windows/Xbox hybrid could offer
- A larger combined library: A system designed for console and PC games could offer more than the catalog of a conventional closed console.
- Cross-device continuity: Play Anywhere, cloud saves, achievements, and shared accounts could make moving between a living-room Xbox, PC, and handheld more seamless where individual games support those features.
- More PC-style input: Keyboard, mouse, ultrawide displays, and other PC accessories could be better supported than on a traditional console.
- Broader hardware possibilities: Microsoft could support different performance profiles or partner hardware while keeping an Xbox-centered interface.
- Easier development across devices: A common platform could reduce the separation between Xbox and Windows builds, although game-by-game compatibility would still depend on developers.
These are potential consequences of the announced direction, not promised Project Helix features. In particular, Microsoft has not said that Steam or Epic purchases will automatically become available on the next Xbox, or that every Xbox game will run on Windows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What could go wrong?
Windows openness is not automatically an upgrade for a console audience. Console buyers pay for an appliance-like experience: turn it on, sign in, install a game, and play. A full PC environment could introduce driver updates, launchers, notifications, settings, compatibility problems, and troubleshooting that Xbox users currently expect Microsoft to manage.
Multiple storefronts could also fragment purchases, saves, achievements, refunds, parental controls, and customer support. A PC version and a console version of the same game may have different compatibility, mod, anti-cheat, or ownership rules. Backward compatibility could require emulation or separate engineering rather than simply installing an old console build.
There is a hardware risk as well. Microsoft raised current Xbox console prices effective August 1, 2026, announcing increases of $100 for 512GB models and $150 for 1TB models while sunsetting the 2TB model. Microsoft attributed the decision partly to component-cost pressure, saying memory and storage costs had risen sharply. Those statements describe Microsoft’s cost outlook, not an independent forecast, but they offer no basis for assuming a Windows-capable next Xbox will be cheap.
A more PC-like machine may need stronger hardware, more storage, or fewer subsidies than a conventional console. Its price could therefore move closer to that of a gaming PC, reducing the value of the plug-and-play console proposition.

What happens to the existing Xbox ecosystem?
Microsoft’s messaging emphasizes continuity with the existing Xbox ecosystem and play across screens, but it has not published final consumer transition policies. The company has not fully specified:
- How long Xbox Series X|S consoles will receive new games.
- Whether every existing digital purchase will transfer to the next device.
- How backward compatibility will work.
- Whether current accessories and peripherals will function.
- Whether physical discs will be supported.
- How achievements and cloud saves will carry forward in every case.
- Which Game Pass benefits will apply on the new hardware.
Play Anywhere and cloud saves point toward a more portable account-based ecosystem, but they do not guarantee that every title, disc, accessory, or purchase will transfer identically. Until Microsoft publishes those policies, buyers should treat compatibility as an important unanswered question rather than a settled benefit.
Should you buy an Xbox, a PC, a handheld, or wait?
| Your priority | Most sensible choice |
|---|---|
| You need a simple living-room console now | Buy current Xbox hardware, but check the post-August 2026 pricing and storage options first. |
| You mainly play free-to-play games | Do not subscribe solely for multiplayer; supported free-to-play games generally do not require the paid console plan. |
| You want Steam, Epic, Battle.net, mods, emulators, or productivity software | Choose a Windows gaming PC today rather than assuming Project Helix will provide those features. |
| You want Xbox games and a known, controller-first experience | A current Xbox remains the safer established platform, especially if you already own a substantial library. |
| You want portable Windows/Xbox gaming | Consider an Xbox Ally-style handheld, while remembering that it is not a confirmed preview of the next home console. |
| You are specifically waiting for Xbox/Windows convergence | Wait for retail specifications, price, storefront policy, compatibility details, and a confirmed release date. |
| You are deciding on Game Pass | Choose Essential for qualifying console multiplayer and its smaller catalog, PC Game Pass for Windows gaming, or Ultimate only if its broader catalog and cloud benefits justify the recurring cost. |
For current PC gaming, PC Game Pass lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer as a requirement, while individual games can impose additional hardware and software requirements. For console multiplayer, remember that an eligible plan is generally relevant for paid games, whereas free-to-play exceptions already exist.

Microsoft is not ditching Xbox hardware. It is building a next-generation system intended to bring console and PC gaming closer together, while Windows itself gains a more Xbox-like experience. Developer alpha hardware is planned for 2027; a consumer launch in that year remains unconfirmed.
The “$60 annual fee” is a separate and older part of the story. It refers most clearly to Game Pass Core’s 2023 annual launch price, not a confirmed current universal fee that Microsoft has promised to remove. The real questions are whether Project Helix preserves console simplicity, how open its Windows foundation becomes, what it costs, and how reliably it carries forward today’s games, purchases, saves, and accessories.
Buy current hardware if you need a known console now. Choose a Windows PC if openness is the priority. Wait for Project Helix if the hybrid Xbox/Windows concept—not merely the Xbox brand—is the reason you are considering a purchase.
