Microsoft and Discord announced these Xbox features on July 31, 2024, and they are now available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The update added direct Discord friend calls, Discord activity in Xbox’s Happening now area, and the ability to watch another person’s Discord stream from an Xbox console. It did not introduce Discord as a separate Xbox application, and Xbox-to-Discord gameplay streaming was already available before this update.

What the July 2024 Xbox Discord update added
- Direct Discord calls: Call an individual Discord friend from Xbox without first arranging for both people to join the same server voice channel.
- Discord activity in Happening now: Xbox can show Discord friends who are gaming or chatting in Discord Voice, along with active Discord voice channels.
- Discord stream viewing: Watch a friend’s Discord stream directly on Xbox. Streams shared from a PC, mobile device, or another Xbox are supported.
The rollout was initially associated with selected Xbox Insiders, but the feature is now documented for supported Xbox consoles. Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X are included; Xbox 360 is not described as supported.
What Xbox already supported
This update is easier to understand if it is separated from earlier Discord integration:

- Discord Voice became available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in September 2022. Players could join Discord voice channels or transfer a Discord call from a phone or computer to Xbox.
- Streaming Xbox gameplay to Discord became generally available in September 2023.
So the main streaming-related addition in July 2024 was the ability to watch other people’s Discord streams on Xbox. It was not the first time Xbox could send gameplay to Discord.
How to connect Xbox and Discord
- Open Discord on desktop or mobile.
- Go to User Settings > Connections.
- Select the Xbox logo.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account connected to your Xbox profile.
- Confirm the connection.
If the features do not appear, disconnect and reconnect the accounts. Discord specifically warns that people who linked their accounts in the past may need to link them again to access newer Xbox features.
Your console should also be running the latest Xbox software. Xbox privacy settings must allow cross-network communication and Discord voice transfer, and parental controls can block voice transfer or streaming.

How to call a Discord friend from Xbox
- Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
- Open Friends or the relevant Happening now section.
- Select a Discord friend or an active Discord voice activity.
- Choose the option to call or join the Discord call.
Xbox interface labels can change with console software updates, so the exact placement may vary slightly. The important difference is that you can start a call with a Discord friend directly instead of first finding a shared server voice channel.
How to watch a Discord stream on Xbox
- Join or open an active Discord call on Xbox.
- Open the call’s member list in the Xbox Guide.
- Select the profile of the person who is streaming.
- Choose Watch Stream.
The stream opens in full-screen view. Xbox supports Discord stream viewing at 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 1440p. If the streamer is using a resolution outside those supported formats, ask them to change it.

The stream can come from a PC, mobile device, or another Xbox. The viewer does not need Discord Nitro to watch a stream.
How to stream Xbox gameplay to Discord
To stream gameplay into a Discord server voice channel:
- Link your Xbox and Discord accounts.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Parties & chats.
- Select Discord, then choose a server.
- Join the desired voice channel.
- Select Stream your game.
- Choose the available resolution and frame-rate settings.
- Select Start stream.
A similar process works for a Discord direct message or group DM after transferring the call to Xbox through the Xbox app. Xbox streams the audio and video of the game currently being played. It does not stream other apps or Xbox services.
If you close the game or switch to another app, the stream pauses. You remain in the Discord voice channel, and other participants can still hear you.
Do you need Discord Nitro?
No. Nitro is not required for basic Discord calls, joining voice channels, watching streams, or ordinary Xbox-to-Discord gameplay streaming.

Nitro affects the available streaming quality. Discord’s current FAQ says Nitro can provide streaming up to 1080p. On Xbox Series X|S, Nitro supports up to 60 frames per second; on Xbox One, the 60-fps option is unavailable and Nitro streaming is limited to 30 fps. The Xbox and Discord accounts must be linked to the Discord account that has Nitro.

Important limitations
- No simultaneous Xbox Party Chat and Discord Voice: Transferring Discord Voice to Xbox or streaming to Discord prevents you from remaining in Xbox Party Chat at the same time.
- Not a standalone Discord app: Discord is integrated into the Xbox interface after the accounts are connected.
- Gameplay only for Xbox streaming: Other console apps and Xbox services cannot be streamed through the Xbox-to-Discord feature.
- Xbox One has a lower frame-rate ceiling: The 60-fps Nitro option is available on Series X|S, not Xbox One.
- Account and privacy requirements apply: Child accounts, parental controls, or restrictive Xbox privacy settings can prevent voice transfer or streaming.
- Mobile devices may still be needed: Initial account linking and some call-transfer workflows can involve both the Discord and Xbox mobile apps.
Discord’s safety and moderation policies continue to apply to Discord Voice and Xbox-to-Discord streaming. Calling or streaming through Discord is more convenient for a mixed-platform group, but it should not be treated as an absolute privacy guarantee.

Discord does not appear in the Xbox Guide
- Install the latest Xbox console update.
- Confirm that the correct Microsoft account is linked to the correct Discord account.
- Disconnect and reconnect the accounts, even if they were linked previously.
- Review Xbox privacy and cross-network communication settings.
- Check whether parental controls are blocking Discord features.
“Transfer didn’t work. Your console needs an update before it can connect to Discord.”
Update the Xbox console, restart the transfer, and try again. Discord identifies outdated console software as the cause of this error.
A friend’s stream cannot be watched
- Confirm that the friend is actively streaming in the same call or voice channel.
- Open the active call’s member list rather than the general Friends list.
- Check that the stream uses 480p, 720p, 1080p, or 1440p.
- Ask the streamer to change resolution if necessary.
The stream quality is lower than expected
Check whether the streamer has Nitro and whether they are using Xbox One or Series X|S. Remember that Nitro does not guarantee a particular bitrate or latency, and Xbox One cannot use the 60-fps streaming option.

What you need—and what you do not
Existing Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners do not need to buy a new console for these features. A compatible headset can improve voice-chat comfort, but it is not required by the Discord integration.
A Series X or Series S is relevant mainly for its newer hardware and, on Series X|S, the higher Discord streaming frame-rate ceiling. Buying a new Xbox solely for Discord calls or stream viewing would not make sense because Xbox One supports the core functionality.
Discord Nitro is worth considering only if you regularly stream gameplay and want its higher-quality options or other Nitro benefits. Check Discord’s official Nitro page for current pricing and plans.
Bottom line
The July 31, 2024 update made Discord feel more native on Xbox. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S owners can call Discord friends, discover Discord activity through Happening now, and watch friends’ streams from the console. Xbox-to-Discord gameplay streaming was already available, and Nitro is optional for basic use.
The trade-off is that Discord does not replace every Xbox communication feature: you cannot stay in Xbox Party Chat while transferred into Discord Voice, and account linking, privacy settings, console updates, and stream-resolution limits still matter.
