Montreal-based Compulsion Games released South of Midnight on April 8, 2025. The third-person action-adventure follows Hazel, a young woman who discovers she is a Weaver and sets out to find her mother in a storm-ravaged town shaped by Southern folklore.
What is South of Midnight about?
When a hurricane devastates the fictional town of Prospero, Hazel’s search for her mother becomes a journey through the American Deep South and its folklore. Along the way, she discovers she is a Weaver: a figure with magical abilities used to fight, traverse the world, and solve puzzles. The story also explores family and healing.

When did South of Midnight release?
The game launched on April 8, 2025. Compulsion Games’ FAQ listed a 9:00 A.M. PT launch. Premium Edition purchasers, as well as Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers who bought the Premium Upgrade, could start early access on April 3, 2025, at 9:00 A.M. PT.

Compulsion Games’ published estimate is 10–12 hours. Xbox Wire gave the same estimate in its January 2025 release announcement. This is the developer’s estimate, not a measured average across players or play styles.

In Xbox Wire’s January 23, 2025 release announcement, Game Director Jasmin Roy described spells that let Hazel control encounters: “Push, Pull, and Weave are some of the spells at your disposal that give you a tactical advantage during a fight. Timing is everything.”

Music
Composer Olivier Deriviere discussed the soundtrack in an Xbox Wire interview published March 20, 2025. He said the team worked with established musicians from the South but sought inspiration rather than imitation: “We worked with various established musicians from the South, but we were never willing to copycat – it would have been inauthentic, because I’m not from there, you know? It was not the goal. The goal was to be inspired and to turn the music into something else.”

Xbox Wire reported a physical Art and Music of South of Midnight set developed with Dutch design house and publisher Cook and Becker. The reported set included a two-LP soundtrack, a 160-page art book, a comic book, and other materials. That announcement establishes the set’s existence, but not its current stock, price, or availability through any particular retailer.
