No current controller fix can restore XDefiant. Ubisoft discontinued the game and ended server activity on June 3, 2025. That means reinstalling XDefiant or Ubisoft Connect, changing input settings, replacing a controller, and trying old PC workarounds cannot make the online game playable in 2026. Ubisoft announced the shutdown on December 3, 2024.
What “controller not working” means now
There are two separate problems that older troubleshooting guides often confuse:

- The console or PC does not detect the controller. This can still be a cable, USB port, Bluetooth, battery, firmware, driver, or hardware problem.
- The controller works elsewhere but not in XDefiant. When XDefiant was active, this could indicate an input or launcher conflict. Today, the discontinued service is the decisive reason the game cannot be restored.
If XDefiant fails to connect or launch, treat that as a service-availability issue rather than proof that your controller is defective.

Check the controller before buying anything
These tests diagnose the controller itself; they do not revive XDefiant.

- Open the console dashboard or Windows controller settings and confirm that button presses and stick movement register.
- Try the controller in another game.
- Connect it with a known data-capable USB cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Try another USB port and, on PC, connect directly instead of through a hub.
- For wireless use, recharge the controller, remove its old pairing, and pair it again.
- Install controller firmware updates through the manufacturer’s official software or console update process.
- If possible, test a second controller.

PS5: check the DualSense connection
XDefiant is no longer available on PS5, but you can separately diagnose a DualSense that is not connecting to the console.
- Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable.
- Press the PS button to pair it.
- Update the PS5 system software and controller software.
- If it still will not connect, turn off the controller and press the reset button in the small hole on its rear for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect it by USB and press the PS button again.
These are Sony’s documented troubleshooting steps. If the controller remains unusable, consult PlayStation’s DualSense support and repair guidance. For PC, Sony documents USB and Bluetooth use with Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11, although supported features vary by game and device; some features require USB when supported. Xbox: separate controller failure from XDefiant’s shutdown
If an Xbox controller does not work in the Xbox dashboard, Windows, or other games, troubleshoot the controller through Xbox’s current device-support resources. Check its batteries or rechargeable pack, USB cable, wireless pairing, firmware, and operation with another device.

Archived PC fixes from when XDefiant was available
The following steps appeared in historical PC troubleshooting coverage. They may explain advice found in old videos and articles, but they are not current solutions and cannot overcome the shutdown.
Close conflicting launchers and overlays
When the game was live, some guides suggested exiting XDefiant and Ubisoft Connect completely, closing Steam, Epic Games Launcher, GOG Galaxy, controller remappers, and overlays, then restarting Ubisoft Connect and launching the game through its normal Ubisoft installation path. Testing with one controller and no overlays could reveal whether multiple programs were claiming or translating the same input.

A historical diagnostic was to start the PC and launcher, connect one controller directly with a data-capable USB cable, and test it without a hub. If it worked only by USB, the original cause may have involved Bluetooth pairing, wireless interference, battery state, or a driver/profile issue rather than the game itself.

Use only one input-remapping layer
Steam Input, DS4Windows, reWASD, manufacturer software, and overlays can each translate controller signals. Historical diagnosis involved testing one method at a time—for example, native Xbox-controller support alone, Steam Input alone, or one manufacturer profile alone. There was no universal “always enable” or “always disable” setting; the correct choice depended on the controller and launch path.
Be cautious with configuration edits
One third-party historical guide suggested changing a GameplayInput_v0 value from 0 to 1. This was not an official Ubisoft fix. File locations and syntax could vary, updates could invalidate the setting, and an incorrect edit could cause new problems. Anyone examining an archived installation should back up the file first—but changing it cannot bypass a server shutdown. The suggestion is documented in Dot Esports’ historical guide.
Do not buy a controller to fix XDefiant
A new Xbox controller, DualSense, adapter, or remapping utility is justified only if your existing controller also fails in system menus or other games. If it works normally elsewhere, the hardware is not the reason you cannot play XDefiant now. Reinstalling XDefiant or Ubisoft Connect likewise cannot restore a discontinued online service.

What to do instead
- Stop troubleshooting XDefiant if it cannot connect or launch; the service ended June 3, 2025.
- Repair the controller generally if it fails across menus, devices, or games.
- Troubleshoot another game if you meant a different Ubisoft title or another shooter. Confirm the exact game before following an old guide.
Ubisoft also stated that new XDefiant downloads, registrations, and purchases were discontinued when the sunset was announced. Its community message provides that additional shutdown context.
