Ubisoft stopped new downloads, player registrations, and purchases on December 3, 2024, but said the already-planned Season 3 would still launch. The game is no longer playable through its official service.
When did XDefiant shut down?
Ubisoft announced the discontinuation on December 3, 2024. At that point, new downloads, player registrations, and purchases ended. Ubisoft said the servers would remain active until June 3, 2025; that announced end-of-service date has passed.
In its December 3 announcement, Ubisoft said Season 3 would still be released, even as further development ended.
Why did Ubisoft discontinue XDefiant?
Ubisoft’s stated reason was that the game had not attracted and retained enough players over the long term to compete in the free-to-play first-person shooter market. Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Ubisoft’s Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, wrote: “Despite an encouraging start, the team’s passionate work, and a committed fan base, we’ve not been able to attract and retain enough players in the long run to compete at the level we aim for in the very demanding free-to-play FPS market.”

She also said XDefiant was too far from the results needed to support further significant investment. This is Ubisoft’s explanation for its decision, not an independently verified account of the company’s finances.
What happened to downloads, purchases, and refunds?
Mark Rubin, XDefiant’s executive producer, wrote in a December 3 community message: “Starting today (December 3, 2024), new downloads and player registrations will no longer be available.” Purchases also stopped that day, according to Ubisoft’s shutdown announcement.

Rubin’s message said buyers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack would receive full refunds. It also said purchases made within the 30 days before the announcement would be fully refunded automatically, with refunds expected within eight weeks of December 3, 2024. Those were the terms and timing Ubisoft announced at the time; they do not establish whether a particular player received a refund.
