Ubisoft’s current Terms of Use allow it to close long-inactive accounts that meet criteria specified in an account-specific notice. The notice must arrive at least 30 days before closure and explain how to keep the account open. If an account is terminated, Ubisoft says access to its Services and Content, account, saves, and game progression ends. The current terms do not publish a universal inactivity threshold or clearly repeat a 2023 assurance that accounts with purchased PC games or active subscriptions were exempt.
Why does Ubisoft close inactive accounts?
Ubisoft says inactivity-based closure is intended to comply with privacy and personal-data retention rules. Its current Terms of Use 5.0 say an account may be suspended or closed when it has been inactive for a long time and meets “specific inactivity criteria.” Those criteria will be described in the notice about the planned closure; the terms do not set one public duration that applies to every account.
The underlying principle is that organizations should not keep personal data indefinitely without a defined retention period or criteria for determining one. France’s data-protection authority, CNIL, says that deleting a commercial account after two years without user action can be proportionate in general. That is regulatory guidance, not a universal legal deadline or a ruling on Ubisoft’s policy.
CNIL also identifies a relevant distinction for games and audiovisual services: an account may serve as a library for purchased digital content. Its guidance says, in translation, that providers may retain data needed to preserve users’ access to purchased digital content even after more than two years of inactivity. It recommends clear communication about retention and considering deactivation and archiving while maintaining a way to reactivate access. This guidance does not establish how Ubisoft must treat any particular account or purchase.

What happens if an account is terminated?
Ubisoft’s terms say termination ends the user’s ability to access the account and use the Services and Content, including saved games and progression. They also say there is no credit or reimbursement for unused services, subscription time, points, or Ubisoft Virtual Currency. These are contractual terms; they do not by themselves resolve how consumer protections apply in every country or establish that every paid game license is automatically void in all circumstances.
Ubisoft’s separate voluntary account-closure guidance lists loss of access to Ubisoft games owned on Ubisoft Connect PC and Ubisoft games on linked platforms, as well as progression, online services, outstanding Ubisoft Store pre-orders, and associated account data. Its privacy policy likewise describes loss of access to games, progress, online services, Store orders, and external-account links when an account is closed. Ubisoft notes that it may retain limited personal data when necessary for legal obligations, legal rights, or legitimate interests such as fraud prevention and service security.

Are purchased games protected from inactivity closure?
There is a documented historical assurance, but it should not be mistaken for a confirmed current exemption. In July 2023, PC Gamer reported Ubisoft’s clarification that accounts with purchased PC games or an active Ubisoft subscription were not eligible for inactivity deletion at that time. The report also said Ubisoft considered account activity, library, inactivity duration, and subscription status. Ubisoft reportedly said then that it had never deleted an account inactive for less than four years.
The current Terms of Use 5.0 do not restate those specific purchase or subscription exemptions. They instead say the criteria will be provided in the individual closure notice and describe the consequences of termination generally. The current voluntary-closure help page covers a user choosing to close an account; it is not the same as a published inactivity policy.

As a result, the available policy statements do not establish whether a game bought through Steam or another storefront, a console-linked entitlement, or another third-party purchase exempts an account under today’s inactivity process. Do not assume that a purchase outside Ubisoft Connect protects the account. If a notice concerns your account, ask Ubisoft Support how your specific entitlements are treated.
What should you do if Ubisoft sends a closure notice?
- Read the notice and its deadline. Ubisoft says the notice will explain the account-specific inactivity criteria, consequences, and steps available to keep the account open.
- Use the steps in that notice within its stated window. The terms promise at least 30 days’ prior notice, but the account-specific message is the source for the action Ubisoft requires.
- Ask Ubisoft Support about purchases the notice does not address. Identify whether the entitlement is on Ubisoft Connect PC, linked to a console, or bought through another storefront; do not rely on the historical 2023 assurance as a current guarantee.
- If you are voluntarily closing the account, review the losses first. Ubisoft says voluntary closure enters a 30-day suspension during which deletion can be cancelled. After permanent closure, the account and associated data cannot be recovered.
How to interpret the 30-day and four-year figures
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| At least 30 days | Ubisoft Terms of Use 5.0 require prior notice of planned inactivity-based closure and say the notice will explain consequences and steps to keep the account open. |
| 30 days | Ubisoft’s voluntary account-closure guidance describes a suspension period before permanent closure, during which the deletion process can be cancelled. |
| Four years | A 2023 PC Gamer report attributed to Ubisoft the statement that, at that time, it had never deleted an account inactive for less than four years. This is historical context, not a current inactivity threshold. |
These figures describe different processes and should not be combined into a universal rule. The terms’ inactivity notice and the voluntary-closure cancellation period are distinct; the four-year statement was reported in 2023 and does not set today’s eligibility threshold.
