Nintendo released Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition digitally on February 19, 2026. It adds higher maximum resolution and frame-rate targets, while owners of the Nintendo Switch version can access the upgraded edition through a paid upgrade pack. The new edition’s enhancements require a Nintendo Switch 2.
What does the Switch 2 Edition add?
Nintendo advertises output of up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second in TV mode, and up to 1080p and up to 60 fps in handheld mode. These are maximum figures, not a guarantee of a locked 60 fps in every scene. 4K output requires a compatible display; Nintendo’s announcement also notes that supported games and display equipment determine whether the stated output is available. Nintendo of America’s February 19, 2026 announcement gives the specifications.
| Mode | Nintendo’s stated maximum | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| TV mode | Up to 4K and up to 60 fps | 4K requires a compatible display; actual output depends on supported games and equipment. |
| Handheld mode | Up to 1080p and up to 60 fps | Both figures are stated maximums, not a promise of consistent performance in every situation. |
The Switch 2 Edition is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2. If its physical or virtual game card is used in an original Switch, the console plays the Nintendo Switch version without the Switch 2 Edition-exclusive features, according to Nintendo UK’s edition page.
Can you upgrade a Switch copy, or do you need to buy the game again?
If you own the full Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo offers an upgrade pack for Switch 2. It works with either the packaged or downloadable Switch game; the pack is not a standalone copy of the game. Nintendo lists it for purchase through Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 and Nintendo Store. Nintendo Support’s upgrade-pack instructions explain the purchase path.
