The xerces-c_2_2_0.dll error means an application cannot load its Apache Xerces-C++ 2.2.0 XML runtime. The xerces-c_2_2_0.dll file is not a Windows system DLL, so copying a replacement into System32 is usually the wrong repair.
Start by answering these questions:
- Which program displays the error?
- Does it appear when Windows starts, when opening a document, or when launching a specific application?
- Did the problem begin after reinstalling, updating, cleaning files, restoring a backup, or an antivirus detection?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the error say the file is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows?
The exact parent application cannot be identified from the DLL name alone. Older engineering, OCR, document-processing, LabVIEW-built, and Apache Axis C++ applications may include this runtime.

What xerces-c_2_2_0.dll does
xerces-c_2_2_0.dll is the Windows release runtime for Apache Xerces-C++ Version 2.2.0, an XML parser library developed by the Apache Software Foundation. Applications use it to read and process XML files.
The matching debug library is named xerces-c_2_2_0d.dll. It is not interchangeable with the release DLL. Do not rename the debug file to remove the d.

The standard Windows package documented for this old release is generally a 32-bit binary. That does not mean it cannot run on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows still needs its 32-bit dependencies. The relevant question is the architecture of the application that reports the error.
Apache also listed a separate Windows XP 64-bit package in its historical archive, so do not assume that every file with a similar name has the same architecture.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
This is the safest and most likely solution. The application installer should restore the exact DLL version, supporting files, and directory structure expected by the program.
Identify the parent application
Look at the error dialog for the program name. If Windows displays only a generic message:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Close the error.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select the Details tab.
- Look for the application that failed.
- Right-click it, if it is still listed, and choose Open file location.
You can also inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
The folder containing the executable is important. Windows normally searches the application directory before other locations, so the correct copy may belong beside that executable or inside a private bin or lib folder.
Use the program’s repair option
For a modern packaged application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Open Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer instructions.
Microsoft documents these repair paths in its app and program repair guidance.
If the program has a launcher, use its Verify files, Repair installation, or equivalent option. If repair does not restore the file, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original vendor installer or trusted installation media.
Do not uninstall first if the application contains irreplaceable settings or project files. Back up those files and check whether the installer offers repair.

A successful repair usually means the program launches normally and the same error does not return. If the error changes to a different missing DLL, the installation may have more than one damaged or missing dependency. Continue repairing the complete application rather than downloading individual files.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL
Security software can remove a legitimate old runtime, especially when it is bundled inside an older application. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry that references the affected application or
xerces-c_2_2_0.dll. - Confirm that the original file came from the legitimate application installer or an official Apache package.
- Restore it only when its source is trustworthy and the detection is understood.
Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History instructions.
After restoring a file, run a scan and launch the application. If the file was restored from an unknown source, or if Defender continues detecting it, do not create an exclusion. Remove the questionable copy and reinstall the parent application from its official source.

An old binary may need to be replaced with a supported application update rather than permanently excluded from scanning.
Fix 3: Restore the correct DLL to the application directory
Use this step only when you know which application needs the file and you have a trustworthy original package.
Apache’s historical Xerces-C++ 2.2.0 archive identifies the Windows package as xerces-c2_2_0-win32.zip. The Apache archive is the appropriate source for a standalone legacy deployment, but archived releases are unsupported and may be unsafe. Prefer an updated version of the parent application whenever one exists.
For an application that was built directly against standalone Xerces-C++:
Recommended Free Tools
- Obtain the matching official package.
- Extract it to a temporary folder.
- Open its
bindirectory. - Locate
xerces-c_2_2_0.dll. - Confirm that the application expects the release build, not
xerces-c_2_2_0d.dll. - Back up the application’s existing files.
- Copy the matching DLL into the application’s documented
binor library directory. - If the vendor specifically documents a shared library directory, add that directory to the required
PATH. - Restart the application.
Apache Axis C++ documentation describes copying the Xerces runtime from the extracted bin directory into the Axis library directory or making that directory available through PATH. Apache’s Xerces documentation also describes using PATH for standalone sample applications.
Avoid changing the global PATH unless the software documentation requires it. A private application directory is safer and makes version selection more predictable.
To add a directory to the user PATH:
- Press
Win+S. - Search for environment variables.
- Select Edit the system environment variables.
- Select Environment Variables.
- Under User variables, select
Path. - Choose Edit and then New.
- Add the vendor-documented directory.
- Select OK on each dialog.
- Restart the application.
Do not substitute Xerces-C++ 3.x for 2.2.0 merely because the names are similar. Different releases can have different exported symbols and application compatibility.
Fix 4: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
A missing-DLL dialog can actually indicate that Windows found a file but could not load it because it has the wrong architecture or is damaged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the application architecture using one of these methods:
- Start the application.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
You can also inspect the application’s documentation or installation folders. Older applications and many programs built with legacy development tools are commonly 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows.
Use the architecture matching the application:
- A 32-bit application requires the 32-bit Xerces runtime.
- A 64-bit application requires a compatible 64-bit build.
- A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit application, but it does not convert 32-bit DLLs into 64-bit DLLs.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into SysWOW64 simply because that folder name appears to refer to 32-bit software. Application-local placement is normally more appropriate, and the parent application’s installer should determine the correct location.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or reports a bad image, architecture mismatch and corruption are possible. Windows associates this condition with STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_FORMAT, but that status does not identify the precise cause. Replace the complete application installation instead of replacing only the named DLL.
Fix 5: Check whether another dependency is actually missing
Windows may name xerces-c_2_2_0.dll even when the real problem is a dependency required by that DLL. This can happen when the runtime is present but cannot load because another library is missing, incompatible, or corrupted.

Look for these clues:
- The file exists beside the executable, but the error remains.
- Replacing the file changes nothing.
- The message changes to a different DLL after reinstalling.
- The program works on one computer but not another.
- The application was moved manually instead of installed.
Use the application’s original installer first. Developers or administrators can use a trusted dependency-analysis tool to inspect the executable and identify the complete chain. Do not download each reported filename separately from an unverified source.
Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables are not automatically the primary fix for this particular 2003 Xerces runtime. They may be needed by a dependent component, but installing a current redistributable does not replace an absent Apache DLL or guarantee compatibility with an old application. Install a runtime only when the application vendor specifies the required architecture and package.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers only when timing points to a driver change
A display, scanner, printer, storage, or device driver does not normally provide xerces-c_2_2_0.dll. However, if the problem began immediately after a driver or security-product update, restore the application first and then address that change.

- Use Roll Back Driver only if the option is available and the problem began after the update.
- Otherwise choose Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that requires Xerces remains the definitive fix for this DLL error.
Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for repairing the parent application. Drivers are a secondary possibility unless other evidence points to them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Repair Windows components when multiple programs are affected
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a private third-party Xerces DLL, but they are appropriate when several unrelated applications report damaged Windows files or when Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system file repair guidance.
Do not repeatedly run these commands expecting them to download xerces-c_2_2_0.dll. If they report that Windows files were repaired but the application still shows the same error, return to the parent application’s installer.
When manually comparing Windows components and repeating DISM/SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific application that owns this runtime.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if the application worked recently and the problem began after an installation, driver change, security update, or system configuration change.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next, then Finish.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.
Microsoft describes System Restore in its official recovery guidance. It does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, and settings installed after the selected restore point.
Why System32, SysWOW64, and regsvr32 are usually wrong
Do not copy this DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a default fix. Windows generally searches the application’s directory before system directories and PATH, so a global copy may not solve the problem. It can also cause unrelated programs to load the wrong Xerces version.
Microsoft explains the loader behavior in its DLL search order documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not run:
regsvr32 xerces-c_2_2_0.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Xerces-C++ is normally an application runtime library, not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
Windows Features are also not a normal source for this file. Do not enable random optional Windows components to obtain it.
Avoid random DLL download sites
An isolated DLL download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, a different Xerces release, or a corrupted file. Even a genuine file may not fix the application if the real problem is a missing dependency, incorrect PATH, damaged installation, or incompatible build.
Use one of these sources instead:
- The original application’s installer, repair package, launcher verification, or vendor support package.
- The official Apache Xerces-C++ archive for a known standalone legacy deployment.
- A supported replacement or update from the application vendor.
If you restore a legacy Apache package, verify its authenticity using the signature information provided with the official archive. Do not treat third-party file inventories, reported file sizes, or reported hashes as universal identifiers for every copy.

FAQ
Is xerces-c_2_2_0.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Apache Xerces-C++ application/runtime DLL. It is not expected to be supplied by Windows or placed in System32.
Which application owns the error?
The DLL name alone cannot identify one parent program. Check the error context, executable path, shortcut target, and the application that was recently installed or repaired. Apache Axis C++, LabVIEW-built programs, and other legacy software can use XML runtimes, but no single application owns this file exclusively.
Is this always a 32-bit DLL?
The ordinary Windows binary documented for Xerces-C++ 2.2.0 is a 32-bit release, while the historical archive also lists a separate Windows XP 64-bit package. Match the DLL to the application rather than to the bitness of Windows.
Can I rename xerces-c_2_2_0d.dll?
No. The d identifies the debug build. Debug and release binaries are not interchangeable.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the application vendor requires a particular redistributable. It is not the primary replacement for this Apache runtime, and a current package is not guaranteed to repair an old Xerces-C++ installation.
Why does the error remain when the file is present?
The file may be in the wrong directory, the wrong architecture, corrupted, or unable to load one of its dependencies. The message can identify the first visible failure rather than the final cause.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Normally no. This runtime DLL is not generally a self-registering component.
What should I do if every fix fails?
Record the full error text, the executable path, application version, Windows architecture, DLL location, recent antivirus events, and any error code. Then contact the application vendor or administrator. The parent application may require a complete supported reinstall rather than a standalone DLL replacement.
