xlodbc32.dll Not Found: Safe Excel ODBC Fixes for Windows

xlodbc32.dll errors usually point to an old Microsoft Excel ODBC add-in, not a damaged Windows system file. If Windows says xlodbc32.dll is missing, cannot be found, cannot be loaded, or failed to register, repair the Excel add-in or the workbook reference that calls it instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program shows the error: Excel, an old workbook, Microsoft Query, or another application
  • When it appears: while opening Excel, opening one workbook, loading an add-in, or starting Windows
  • The exact filename: xlodbc32.dll, XLODBC.DLL, or XLODBC32.DLL
  • Your Excel architecture: select File > Account > About Excel and check whether it says 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether multiple Excel versions were installed: especially Excel 5.0, Excel 5.0c, Excel 95, Excel 97, or a later version
  • Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file
  • Whether the problem affects one workbook or every workbook

If only one old workbook fails, its stored add-in reference is the leading suspect. If every Excel session fails, the add-in may be missing, misplaced, damaged, or incompatible with the installed Excel version.

What xlodbc32.dll actually is

xlodbc32.dll is a genuine legacy Microsoft component called XLODBC DLL. It belongs to the ODBC Add-In for Microsoft Excel 5.0 and was used with the XLODBC.XLA Excel add-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The add-in provided older SQL functions, including SQL.REQUEST, SQLOpen, and SQLRetrieve. Microsoft’s documentation explains that these functions are contained in Xlodbc.xla and require a reference to that add-in. See Microsoft’s SQL.REQUEST documentation.

This is not normally a Windows component. You should not expect to find it in:

  • %SystemRoot%System32
  • %SystemRoot%SysWOW64
  • Every application directory
  • A general Windows DLL cache

Old Office installations commonly placed Xlodbc.xla and Xlodbc32.dll in an Office library directory associated with Microsoft Query. The exact folder depends on the original Office installation and whether Excel was installed locally, from a network location, or as a workstation installation.

Legacy documentation uses several related names:

  • XLODBC.DLL
  • XLODBC32.DLL
  • xlodbc32.dll
  • XLODBC.XLA

Treat these as related legacy add-in names, not as proof that every file with a similar name is interchangeable.

Why a modern Excel installation asks for this file

A current Excel installation can still encounter this error when opening an old workbook. The workbook may contain a hard-coded reference to an XLODBC.XLA file from an older Excel installation.

Common scenarios include:

  1. Excel 5.0 or another older Excel version was installed beside a later version.
  2. The workbook was created on a different computer with Microsoft Query components installed.
  3. The old add-in was moved, deleted, or excluded from a workstation installation.
  4. Office was upgraded while the workbook retained its original reference path.
  5. Antivirus or cleanup software removed the DLL.
  6. A 32-bit legacy add-in is being loaded by an incompatible Excel environment.
  7. The file exists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
  8. The workbook expects XLODBC.DLL or XLODBC32.DLL while the installed add-in uses a different legacy layout.

A message such as “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Fix 1: Correct the workbook’s missing Excel reference

This is the best first fix when the error appears for one old workbook.

1. Make a backup copy

Close the workbook and copy it to a safe location. Work on the copy until the reference has been corrected and the workbook opens normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open the VBA references list

  1. Open the workbook in desktop Excel.
  2. Press Alt+F11.
  3. In the Visual Basic Editor, select Tools > References.
  4. Look for an entry marked MISSING or a reference mentioning Xlodbc.xla.
  5. Clear the checkbox beside the broken reference.

Do not clear unrelated references unless they are also marked missing.

3. Browse to the correct add-in

  1. In the same References window, select Browse.
  2. Locate the trusted, original XLODBC.XLA associated with the Excel installation intended to open the workbook.
  3. Select it and choose Open.
  4. Confirm that the reference no longer shows MISSING.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Close the Visual Basic Editor.
  7. Save the workbook.
  8. Close Excel completely.
  9. Reopen Excel and then reopen the workbook.

What success looks like

The workbook opens without the missing-file message, and its legacy SQL functions work as expected.

If the reference immediately becomes missing again, the add-in is probably in the wrong directory, unavailable on a network path, blocked by permissions, or incompatible with the Excel architecture. Continue with the repair and installation steps below.

Fix 2: Re-add the original XLODBC.XLA add-in

If the workbook reference is correct but Excel cannot load the add-in, add the original file through Excel rather than copying individual DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open desktop Excel.
  2. Select File > Options.
  3. Select Add-ins.
  4. At the bottom, set Manage to Excel Add-ins.
  5. Select Go.
  6. Choose Browse.
  7. Select the original XLODBC.XLA from the trusted Office installation source.
  8. Select OK.
  9. If Excel asks whether to copy the add-in to its library, avoid copying it into an unrelated or shared installation directory. Use the original intended location when the add-in belongs to a network or workstation installation.
  10. Close Excel and reopen it.

If you cannot find XLODBC.XLA, do not download a replacement DLL and assume the add-in is repaired. The correct solution is to restore the complete legacy Office or Microsoft Query component from original, trusted installation media or from your organization’s software administrator.

Fix 3: Repair Microsoft 365 or Office

If the error involves a supported Office installation, repair Office before attempting Windows repairs.

  1. Close Excel and all other Office programs.
  2. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
  3. Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office installation.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Select Modify.
  6. Choose Quick Repair.
  7. Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test Excel and the affected workbook.

If Quick Repair does not help, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. Microsoft says Online Repair repairs the full Office installation. Follow the official Office repair procedure.

Important limitation

Repairing a current Microsoft 365 installation may not restore an obsolete Excel 5.0 add-in. If the workbook genuinely depends on XLODBC.XLA, you may need the original trusted Office media, an archived organizational installer, or a migration of the workbook’s database code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and file permissions

A security product or cleanup utility may have removed an old DLL because it was unusual, unsigned, or located in an old Office directory. That possibility does not prove the file was malicious.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for a recent action involving xlodbc32.dll, XLODBC.DLL, XLODBC32.DLL, or XLODBC.XLA.
  5. Confirm that the original file path matches the expected Office or Microsoft Query installation.
  6. If your organization manages antivirus, ask an administrator to validate the detection, publisher, file hash, and original source.
  7. Restore the file only after it has been verified as part of the trusted Office installation.
  8. Reopen Excel and test the workbook.

If the file was manually deleted, restore the complete add-in from the original installation rather than restoring only a loose DLL.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The name xlodbc32.dll indicates a legacy 32-bit component, but the filename alone is not enough to establish compatibility with every Excel version.

Check your Excel architecture:

  1. Open Excel.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Select About Excel.
  4. Read the architecture shown in the dialog.

A 32-bit Excel add-in generally needs a compatible 32-bit Excel host. A 64-bit Excel installation may not load an old 32-bit add-in correctly. Do not place a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 as a workaround. Those directories are not general-purpose storage locations, and copying the file there does not make an incompatible add-in compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the workbook is business-critical, test it with the original Excel version and matching architecture in an approved, isolated environment. The longer-term solution is usually to migrate its database connection and VBA code rather than preserve a 1990s add-in indefinitely.

Fix 6: Investigate a missing dependency

If the file exists in the correct Office directory but Excel reports that the module cannot be found, another dependency may be missing.

Check the following:

  • Is the add-in directory still available?
  • Is the file on a disconnected network share?
  • Can your user account read the folder?
  • Was Office installed as a partial workstation or network installation?
  • Did a recent security policy block old macros or add-ins?
  • Does the error occur only when a particular workbook calls the legacy SQL functions?

Avoid downloading dependency files individually. The proper repair is to repair or reinstall the complete Office or Microsoft Query component from a trusted source.

Fix 7: Use Windows repair only for broader Windows corruption

xlodbc32.dll is not a protected Windows component. System File Checker normally will not recreate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use DISM and SFC only when you also have wider Windows symptoms, such as damaged system components, failed servicing, or multiple unrelated Windows files reporting corruption.

  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test Excel again.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance covers this process.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not install an obsolete Office add-in. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention, but its free scan does not replace repairing Office or restoring the original XLODBC.XLA package, and the repair functions require the full version.

Fix 8: Do not treat this as a driver problem

xlodbc32.dll is an Excel add-in component, not a graphics, chipset, printer, or network driver. Device Manager and Windows Features will not normally reinstall it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still check for a separate driver problem if the same computer has broader hardware symptoms:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for devices with a warning icon.
  4. Expand categories such as Network adapters, Display adapters, and System devices.
  5. Right-click a clearly affected device and select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not uninstall random devices to fix an Excel add-in. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact versions involved, which is easier than checking many devices manually; driver installation remains optional and is not the definitive repair for a missing xlodbc32.dll.

Do not download xlodbc32.dll from a DLL website

Random DLL download sites are a poor repair source because the file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have an unverified version, or omit dependencies. Even a clean copy often does not fix the workbook’s broken XLODBC.XLA reference.

Do not:

  • Copy the DLL into System32
  • Copy it into SysWOW64
  • Put it in every application folder
  • Replace it with a similarly named file
  • Disable antivirus to force it to load
  • Use an unofficial “DLL fixer”
  • Download historical Office files from an unknown mirror

The safe sources are the original trusted Office installation, your organization’s approved software repository, or Microsoft’s supported Office repair process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply

A legacy Excel add-in DLL is not automatically a self-registering ActiveX or OLE control. regsvr32 is intended for components that expose the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer.

Therefore, do not run commands such as:

regsvr32 xlodbc32.dll

A failed Excel message such as “Attempt to register Xlodbc32.dll failed” is part of the old add-in-loading process. It does not prove that manually registering the DLL is the correct fix. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of Regsvr32.

Migrate the workbook when possible

Microsoft later recommended ADO instead of the older Xlodbc.xla functions. If the workbook is still actively used, plan to replace the legacy dependency with a supported data connection.

  2. Select Data.
  3. Select Get Data.
  4. Choose From Other Sources > From ODBC.
  5. Select the appropriate ODBC data source.
  6. Authenticate and load the data.
  7. Rebuild formulas, queries, or VBA procedures that depended on SQL.REQUEST, SQLOpen, or SQLRetrieve.

Microsoft documents this workflow in Import data from data sources with Power Query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not repair an old workbook automatically, but it removes the dependency that keeps causing the error.

Frequently asked questions

Is xlodbc32.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is a legacy Microsoft Excel ODBC add-in component associated with XLODBC.XLA. It should not normally be installed in the Windows system directories.

Which Excel versions used it?

The component is associated with Excel 5.0 and Excel 5.0c. Related legacy Microsoft Query scenarios also involved Excel 95 and Excel 97. A workbook created with one of those versions may still request the add-in in a later Excel installation.

Why does only one workbook show the error?

That workbook likely contains a stale or hard-coded reference to an old XLODBC.XLA path. Open Alt+F11 > Tools > References, clear the missing reference, and browse to the correct trusted add-in.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Microsoft 365 replace xlodbc32.dll?

Not necessarily. Office repair may restore supported Office components, but it may not provide a discontinued Excel 5.0 add-in. Use original trusted media or migrate the workbook.

Should I run SFC or DISM?

Only when there are broader Windows corruption symptoms. These commands normally will not recreate a missing Excel add-in.

Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?

Normally no. The Excel add-in loading process is different from registering an ActiveX control.

What if the message says XLODBC.DLL instead?

Treat it as a related legacy naming variant and inspect the workbook’s add-in reference, original Office directory, and installed Excel architecture. Do not assume a similarly named file is a valid replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the file was quarantined?

Check the antivirus quarantine and validate the original path, publisher, hash, and installation source before restoring it. If it cannot be verified, reinstall the complete trusted Office component instead.

When should I use System Restore?

Use it only when the failure clearly began after a recent change and no trusted Office installation source is available. It is not the first-line solution for an obsolete Excel add-in.
