Error messages this guide covers
You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because XLSTATCR1C.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting XLSTATCR1C.dll.”
- “Error loading XLSTATCR1C.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because XLSTATCR1C.dll was not found.”
- “XLSTATCR1C.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- XLSTAT’s “Essential library missing” message
- VBA “Run-time error 53: File not found”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Fix 1: Completely reinstall XLSTAT
This is the most likely solution for a missing, damaged, mismatched, or partially updated file. XLSTAT recommends a complete uninstall and reinstall when its essential-library error remains.
Remove XLSTAT
- Close Excel and any other Office applications.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps. On some Windows versions, open Apps & features.
- Find XLSTAT.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If XLSTAT does not uninstall cleanly, use XLSTAT’s official clean-install tool, then restart the computer.
Install the matching XLSTAT package
- Download XLSTAT from its official download page or your MyXLSTAT account.
- Run
xlstat.exe. - Choose the appropriate installation scope when asked.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Start XLSTAT once before opening your normal workbook.
- Restart Windows using Start → Power → Restart.
- Open Excel and test XLSTAT.
A successful repair normally removes the essential-library message and restores the XLSTAT commands or ribbon in Excel. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the security and architecture checks below rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and security policy
Security software can quarantine an XLSTAT library or block Excel from loading it.
Check Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an action involving XLSTAT or
XLSTATCR1C.dll. - Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. First verify that it came from the official XLSTAT installation.
- If the file was quarantined and the installation is trusted, follow XLSTAT’s antivirus guidance, then reinstall XLSTAT so the complete matching set of files is restored.
On a managed computer, your organization may block add-ins or executable libraries. Ask IT to review the quarantine event and permit the official XLSTAT folder if company policy allows it. XLSTAT also documents permission and policy checks in its essential-library troubleshooting guide.
To check folder access:
- Browse to the XLSTAT installation folder.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Select your Windows account and confirm that access is not explicitly denied.
- Have an administrator correct the permissions if necessary.
Fix 3: Match XLSTAT to Excel’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
Do not confuse Windows architecture with Excel architecture. A 64-bit version of Windows can run either 32-bit or 64-bit Excel.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check Excel:
- Open Excel.
- Select File → Account.
- Select About Excel.
- Read the bitness shown in the About dialog.
Use the corresponding XLSTAT installer:
- 32-bit Excel: XLSTAT x86 installer
- 64-bit Excel: XLSTAT x64 installer
Uninstall the mismatched XLSTAT installation before installing the correct package. Do not mix x86 and x64 XLSTAT files or copy a DLL from one installation into another.

A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption or an architecture mismatch. It does not, by itself, prove that the file is malware.
Fix 4: Restore required Visual C++ components
Missing runtime dependencies can produce a loader error even when XLSTATCR1C.dll is present. XLSTAT’s alternative-installer instructions identify Visual C++ 2008 and Visual C++ 2017 packages for some older or manual deployments.
Install the package matching Excel’s architecture:
- Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86
- Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64
- Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable x86
- Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable x64
These requirements are especially relevant to older XLSTAT versions and manual deployments. They do not establish that every current XLSTAT installation requires every listed package.
After installing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Excel.
- Load XLSTAT again.
If the error persists, reinstall XLSTAT after the runtime installation so its files and dependencies are aligned.
Fix 5: Repair the Excel installation
If Excel itself is damaged or cannot load add-ins, repair Office after repairing XLSTAT.
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Modify.
- Select Quick Repair, then choose Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Excel.
- If the problem remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
Microsoft documents the process in its Office repair instructions.

Microsoft Store Excel can also have compatibility limitations. XLSTAT says the add-in works best with the regular desktop version of Excel. If Excel came from the Microsoft Store, review XLSTAT’s guidance on XLSTAT and Store Excel and use a supported desktop Office installation if your organization permits it.

Fix 6: Restore the XLSTAT add-in entry
If Excel opens but XLSTAT is missing from the ribbon, the library may be installed while the add-in entry is disabled or stale.
- Open Excel.
- Select File → Options.
- Choose Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to Excel Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Choose Browse.
- Open the XLSTAT installation folder.
- Select
XLSTATRIB. - Confirm the selection and reopen Excel.
Use the XLSTAT folder listed earlier, not System32 or SysWOW64. XLSTAT provides additional add-in recovery steps.
If the add-in entry points to a folder that no longer exists, remove the stale entry and reinstall XLSTAT.
Fix 7: Remove stale XLSTAT files from Windows system folders
XLSTAT’s troubleshooting guidance includes checking for old XLSTAT* files in System32 after previous installations. Do not make the problem worse by placing the current DLL there.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check
C:WindowsSystem32andC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Look for stale XLSTAT files left by an old installation.
- Do not delete files blindly. If you find old XLSTAT files, record their names and ask your administrator or XLSTAT support whether they should be removed.
- Reinstall XLSTAT into its normal application folder.
The correct destination for XLSTATCR1C.dll is the XLSTAT installation directory.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only after repairing XLSTAT
System File Checker normally repairs Windows files, not third-party application libraries. Run these commands only after reinstalling XLSTAT, or when Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test Excel.
Microsoft provides the official SFC and DISM procedure. If either command reports repairs, test XLSTAT again. If both complete without resolving the error, return to the XLSTAT reinstall and dependency checks.

What not to do
- Do not download
XLSTATCR1C.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy it to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not run
regsvr32 XLSTATCR1C.dll. This is an application library, and XLSTAT does not instruct users to register it. Microsoft’sregsvr32documentation describes registration for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration functions. - Do not mix files from different XLSTAT versions or architectures.
- Do not use Windows Features, DirectX repair, registry cleaners, or driver reinstallation as substitutes for repairing XLSTAT.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined file unless its origin is verified.
A manually copied file is appropriate only in a controlled recovery using the exact same verified XLSTAT build and its original XLSTAT folder.
FAQ
