“ The program can’t start because xpcom_core.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “Error loading xpcom_core.dll,” “Couldn’t load XPCOM,” or “Could not load XPCOM.”
Which fix applies to you
Start with the situation that best matches what happened:
- The error appeared after a Firefox update: perform a clean reinstall of the affected Mozilla application. Mixed old and new files are the most likely cause.
- The problem began after System Restore: reinstall the Mozilla application instead of restoring or replacing one DLL.
- Your antivirus quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- You are launching an old Firefox-based application: reinstall that exact application. A current Firefox installer may not contain the private files it needs.
- Only this old Mozilla program fails: Windows repair commands are unlikely to recreate the missing file.
- Several unrelated Windows programs also fail: check Windows health with DISM and SFC.
- The shortcut may point to another installation: verify which executable it launches before repairing anything.
Do not download xpcom_core.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can introduce malware, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build, or a file that does not match the rest of the application.
What xpcom_core.dll is
xpcom_core.dll is a genuine legacy Mozilla application DLL, not a Windows component. The strongest documented association is with Firefox 2.0.0.x, including the old 32-bit Firefox 2.0.0.20 release.

It normally belonged inside the Mozilla application directory, such as:

On some systems, a 32-bit application may instead be under:
C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefox
The supplied file metadata identifies a 32-bit build, version 1.8.20051.11116, with a size of approximately 0.38 MB. Those details describe a legacy file and should not be treated as proof that every file with this name is authentic.
Current Firefox does not normally use this old filename. If a modern Firefox installation shows a generic “Couldn’t load XPCOM” message, that does not necessarily mean xpcom_core.dll itself is missing. It can indicate that several Firefox files are absent, damaged, blocked, or from incompatible versions.

This is the most reliable repair for a missing, damaged, or mismatched xpcom_core.dll.
Mozilla applications keep the user profile separately from the application files. A normal uninstall and reinstall should preserve Firefox bookmarks, saved passwords, history, and settings, provided you do not delete the profile folders.
Before uninstalling
- Close Firefox or the affected Mozilla application.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select any remaining Firefox or Mozilla process.
- Click End task.
- If the program is an old Firefox-based application rather than Firefox itself, write down its exact name. You must reinstall that same product, not automatically substitute current Firefox.
Uninstall the program
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Firefox or the affected Mozilla program.
- Select the three-dot menu, or click the program name.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
If the uninstaller is missing, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected Mozilla application.
- Click Uninstall.
Remove only the stale application folder
After uninstalling, check these locations in File Explorer:

Delete the application folder only if it remains and you are certain it belongs to the program you just removed.

Do not delete these profile locations merely to repair an application DLL:
%APPDATA%MozillaFirefox
%LOCALAPPDATA%MozillaFirefox
Those folders can contain bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, and settings. If the application is especially old or valuable, back up the profile before continuing.
Install from Mozilla
Download the appropriate installer from Mozilla’s official Firefox download page. For an obsolete application, use the original vendor installer or the exact official legacy build required by that product. Do not use a current Firefox installer to repair a different Mozilla-based application unless that application’s documentation specifically permits it.
Then:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the program from its new shortcut.
A successful repair means the application opens without the xpcom_core.dll or XPCOM error. If the same message returns immediately, do not keep copying replacement DLLs into the folder. Continue with the checks below.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software can quarantine or block an old application file. This is possible, but you should not blindly allow the file.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Firefox, the affected Mozilla application, or
xpcom_core.dll. - Review the detected file path and action.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from a trusted official installer.
- The path is the expected Mozilla application directory.
- Your security product identifies the event as a false positive or otherwise confirms the file is safe.
- You have scanned the installer and system.
If the file came from an unknown DLL site, leave it blocked and remove it. Reinstall the complete application from its official source instead.

After checking quarantine, run a full security scan. If the file disappears again after reinstalling, inspect third-party endpoint security, ransomware protection, and application-control settings. The security product may be blocking the installer or deleting an obsolete binary.
Fix 3: Repair an interrupted update or System Restore mismatch
A failed update can leave old and new Mozilla files mixed together. One file may be present while another has the wrong version, causing the broader “Couldn’t load XPCOM” message.
System Restore can create a similar mismatch by rolling back some application files but not restoring every related file consistently.
The repair is the same:
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Delete its remaining application folder.
- Leave the Firefox profile folder alone.
- Reinstall the exact application build from an official source.
- Test it before restoring extensions or copying additional files.
If multiple Mozilla installations exist, inspect the shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the executable path.
- Repair the installation at that path, not merely the first Firefox folder you find.
Portable copies can also cause confusion. Search for the executable you actually launch and confirm that its neighboring DLLs belong to the same installation.
Fix 4: Use Windows repair commands only for wider Windows damage
xpcom_core.dll is a third-party application file. DISM and SFC normally repair protected Windows components, not Mozilla DLLs. Use them when several unrelated Windows programs fail, Windows itself reports corrupted components, or system repair is otherwise justified.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until SFC reaches 100 percent.
If Windows reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and test the affected applications. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run Windows Update again and repeat the documented repair process. If only the old Mozilla application fails, return to the clean reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Fix 5: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for libraries that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no verified evidence that xpcom_core.dll is a self-registering COM component. Running this from the application folder:
regsvr32 xpcom_core.dll
is therefore unlikely to repair the installation. It may instead produce an error saying that the entry point was not found.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular COM or ActiveX DLL.

The documented legacy file is 32-bit. A 32-bit Mozilla application needs its compatible application files, regardless of whether Windows itself is 64-bit.

Do not try to fix it by:
- Copying a 64-bit DLL beside a 32-bit executable.
- Copying a DLL from another Firefox version.
- Combining files from different Mozilla installations.
- Moving the file to
System32orSysWOW64. - Replacing one DLL while leaving the rest of the old application intact.
If the program is obsolete, current Windows security and compatibility settings may prevent it from running even after the missing file is restored. First confirm that the application is still required. If it is a third-party product based on Firefox, obtain that product’s own installer and dependencies.
Fix 7: Drivers and runtimes are usually not the answer
Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, .NET, and graphics drivers are not established causes of this particular legacy Mozilla DLL error. Installing them at random adds work without repairing a missing application-local file.
Driver troubleshooting is reasonable only when the same computer also has display failures, device errors, crashes, or problems across unrelated applications:

- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If reinstalling still does not work
Work through this final checklist:
- Confirm the shortcut launches the installation you repaired.
- Check whether antivirus removes or blocks the file again.
- Try installing to the normal application directory with administrator approval.
- Check available disk space and the drive for errors.
- Disconnect unnecessary cleanup utilities or third-party security controls temporarily while testing the official installer.
- Create a temporary new Firefox profile only after the application files are intact.
- If both Firefox and unrelated Windows applications fail, investigate broader Windows corruption.
- If only an obsolete third-party Mozilla application fails, contact that product’s vendor or replace it with a supported application.
Do not delete the existing profile as a first step. A corrupt profile can affect application behavior, but it is not the usual cause of a missing application DLL.
FAQ
Is xpcom_core.dll part of Windows?
No. Available Mozilla evidence places it in old Mozilla application folders. It should not be copied into a Windows system directory.
Which program installed xpcom_core.dll?
The strongest documented provenance is legacy Firefox 2.0.x. Other Mozilla-related applications may show XPCOM errors, but identify the exact product before choosing an installer.
Does current Firefox need this file?
There is no evidence that current Firefox ships or uses this old filename. A current Firefox XPCOM error may involve a different set of application files.
Will reinstalling Firefox delete bookmarks and passwords?
