“The program can’t start because xpshims.dll is missing from your computer.”
You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because xpshims.dll was not found,” “Error loading xpshims.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.” xpshims.dll is a Microsoft Internet Explorer compatibility component associated primarily with Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP, so Windows 10 and Windows 11 users should first identify the old application requesting it rather than treat it as a normal modern Windows runtime.

What xpshims.dll actually is
xpshims.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, graphics-driver component, or general-purpose gaming DLL. Its documented description is Internet Explorer Compatibility Shims for XP, and its product association is Windows Internet Explorer.
A compatibility shim is a translation layer. Older software may expect old Internet Explorer behavior, APIs, or system responses. A shim can intercept those requests and make them behave as the older program expects. If the shim is absent or cannot load, the requesting program may stop before its main window appears.

Microsoft’s update records associate xpshims.dll with Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. They list separate x86 and x64 builds, including documented builds with the same version but different file sizes. That distinction matters: a 32-bit application needs the 32-bit copy, while a 64-bit application needs the 64-bit copy.
There is no verified modern standalone xpshims.dll redistributable for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Its presence in an error message is therefore a strong clue that an old application or legacy component is involved.
Find the program requesting the file
Before copying anything, identify the parent program.
If the error names an application
Write down the executable name shown in the dialog. Search for that program in:

- Search for the program name
- Select the three-dot menu
- Choose Advanced options, if available
- Use Repair or Reset, if the option exists
If there is no repair option, find the program’s original installer or official support package. An application installer may expect xpshims.dll as part of its own legacy files, even though the underlying component originated with Internet Explorer.

If the error appears when launching a shortcut
Right-click the shortcut and select Properties. Check the Target field and note the executable path. The folder named in that path is more useful than the DLL dialog alone because it identifies the application that initiated the load.
If the error appears at startup
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Startup apps. Disable unfamiliar legacy entries one at a time and restart. If the error stops, re-enable entries individually to identify the requester.
Do not delete the startup entry as a first step. The goal is to identify the application, not hide the missing dependency.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the old application
This is the most likely fix when one program reports xpshims.dll.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Locate the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall, unless Repair is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its original developer-provided installer or trusted installation media.
- Right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator for the first launch.
If the program has its own setup utility, look for Repair, Modify, or Restore instead of uninstalling it. A repair operation can restore private application files without replacing unrelated Windows components.
Test the program after repair. If it starts normally, the problem was the incomplete application installation. If the same error returns immediately, the installer may be incompatible with the current Windows version or may require additional legacy components.
Do not manually copy xpshims.dll into the application folder unless the exact file comes from a verified Microsoft installation image, update package, or known-good backup and the application’s architecture and build are confirmed.

- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry associated with the affected program or xpshims.dll.
- Check the original file path, detection name, and source.
- Do not choose Restore until you have confirmed that the file came from a legitimate Microsoft or application installation.
If the file is genuinely part of a damaged old installation, reinstalling that application from trusted media is safer than restoring an isolated quarantined file. If Windows Security continues to detect it, leave it blocked, run a full scan, and investigate the parent application.
Microsoft explains Protection History and quarantine handling in its Windows Security guidance.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the error appears connected to Windows components, a damaged system installation, or an update rollback. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a private DLL bundled with an unrelated application.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store and normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store. Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker procedure.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again only if Windows reports that a repair is pending. If the error belongs to an old application directory, reinstall that application instead. Modern DISM instructions should not be treated as a guaranteed repair method for an original Windows XP installation.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which files changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix when xpshims.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 4: Match the application and DLL architecture
Windows architecture and application architecture are not always the same. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit legacy application, so the correct DLL is determined by the executable requesting it.
Check the application’s architecture using its documentation or installer. You can also inspect Task Manager while the program is running. On some Windows installations, 32-bit processes are marked with “32-bit” in the process details.
A mismatch can produce messages such as:
- “The specified module could not be found”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “Error loading xpshims.dll”
That wording does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may have found xpshims.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies, found the wrong architecture, or encountered a damaged binary.

Do not assume that System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory is universally correct. Historical Internet Explorer installations used different layouts, and the exact path depends on the operating system, package, language, architecture, and installer manifest.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help if xpshims.dll errors began immediately after an update, cleanup, failed repair, or software installation.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If the error returns after reinstalling the application, System Restore did not address the underlying compatibility problem. Use the application’s current installer or run it in a supported compatibility configuration instead.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when diagnosis points there
Graphics, chipset, and storage drivers are not primary fixes for xpshims.dll. There is no evidence that this file is a graphics or Visual C++ runtime component. Update drivers only if the same application also reports device initialization failures or Device Manager shows a related problem.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, System devices, and relevant hardware categories.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Use the manufacturer’s official driver package if an update is required.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.
Do not replace xpshims.dll merely because a driver update is available.
Recommended Free Tools
Manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver packages can be slow when you do not know which device is involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant hardware, while driver installation through the full version is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns the missing component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide COM self-registration functions such as DllRegisterServer.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility in its regsvr32 command reference. There is no verified evidence that xpshims.dll is a self-registering COM server.

Do not enable or copy legacy browser components at random to satisfy one application. First identify the program and follow its official compatibility instructions. A modern Windows installation is not expected to contain every file from the Windows XP-era Internet Explorer 8 stack.
If the application genuinely requires an old Internet Explorer environment, use the vendor’s supported deployment method, a properly maintained legacy system, or an isolated virtual machine where appropriate. Do not replace a current browser installation with files taken from an unrelated computer.
Safe-source and security guidance
Avoid isolated DLL downloads. A random copy can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or create a DLL-search-order conflict. It also leaves the original installation problem unresolved.
Use one of these sources instead:
- The affected application’s official installer or repair option
- Original Microsoft installation media
- A Microsoft update package that matches the operating system, language, service-pack level, and architecture
- A verified Microsoft backup
- Windows repair tools when the file belongs to the Windows component store
Verify a recovered file’s digital signature, location, version, and hash where possible. A file named xpshims.dll is not automatically genuine merely because the name is correct.

Frequently asked questions
Is xpshims.dll malware?
Not by itself. Microsoft documents a legitimate file with this name as an Internet Explorer compatibility component. A suspicious path, invalid signature, unexpected version, or antivirus detection still requires investigation.
Is xpshims.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The documented file is strongly associated with Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports it, an old application or legacy component is probably requesting it. Do not assume that current Windows should provide a standalone copy.
Can I copy xpshims.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not do so as a routine fix. The correct location depends on the installation, requesting application, architecture, and build. An incorrect copy can introduce conflicts and still fail because another dependency is missing.
Does reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not normally. xpshims.dll is not identified as one of those runtimes. Install or repair those packages only when the application’s own dependency analysis specifically identifies one.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of xpshims.dll, or the file may have the wrong architecture, invalid metadata, or corruption. Check the parent application and its complete installation rather than replacing the visible filename.
What if none of these fixes works?
Identify the requesting executable, inspect its event-log entries, verify the file’s signature and architecture, and reinstall the parent application from trusted media. If the program is inseparable from an obsolete Internet Explorer or Windows XP environment, running it in a correctly isolated legacy environment may be safer than modifying current system directories.
