“The program can’t start because xrnetserver.dll is missing from your computer.” If xrnetserver.dll is not found or cannot be loaded, repair the matching S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game or mod rather than copying a replacement into Windows.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The file is missing from the game’s
binfolder: Verify or reinstall the exact game, mod, or edition. - The file exists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: A dependent X-Ray DLL or legacy runtime may be missing. Repair the complete installation.
- The message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”: Suspect corruption, a mismatched build, or an incompatible replacement.
- The game starts but crashes and names
xrNetServer.dllas the faulting module: This is a runtime crash, not necessarily a missing-file problem. Investigate mods, saves, compatibility, and version mismatches. - Single-player works but multiplayer or server creation fails: Check DirectPlay and legacy networking compatibility.
- Windows has other damaged-component symptoms: Run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate this game file.
What xrnetserver.dll is
xrNetServer.dll is a private 32-bit component of GSC Game World’s X-Ray engine. It is used by S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat, and related X-Ray-engine mods.

It is not a Windows DLL, Microsoft component, Visual C++ file, or DirectX file. The normal location is the game’s own bin folder, alongside files such as xrCore.dll, xrGame.dll, xrSound.dll, and xrEngine.exe.
A 32-bit game needs its matching 32-bit engine files even on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Different S.T.A.L.K.E.R. releases and mods can contain different builds. Do not use a file from another title, another mod, or an unknown download source.
Fix 1: Repair the exact game installation
This is the most likely solution.
Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Verification checks for missing or corrupted files and restores files belonging to that Steam installation. Local configuration files may legitimately remain unchanged or fail verification.
If verification completes but the error returns:
- Exit the game and Steam.
- Open the game’s installation folder from Steam’s Installed Files page.
- Confirm that the game has its own
binfolder. - Check Windows Security quarantine and protection history.
- Restore the file only if it was quarantined from this trusted installation.
- Run verification again.
If Steam repeatedly removes or fails to restore the file, inspect antivirus history, disk health, permissions, and installed mod managers. A mod may also be replacing the original files after every verification.

Use the official installer for the same game edition. Do not install only an individual DLL.
Before reinstalling, back up saves and configuration files if the game stores them outside its installation directory. Then:
- Uninstall the affected game from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, if it appears there.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again using the original official installer.
- Start the unmodified game once.
- Confirm that
xrNetServer.dllis present in the game’sbinfolder. - Reapply official patches or the mod only after the clean game launches.
If the installer offers repair, choose Repair first. If it does not, a clean reinstall is safer than replacing one file manually.
Fix 2: Reinstall the mod as a complete build
Standalone X-Ray mods often include their own executable and engine DLLs. They may not use the files installed by Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, or Call of Pripyat.

For a mod installation:
- Read the mod’s official installation instructions.
- Back up saves only if the mod author confirms they are compatible with a reinstall.
- Remove the broken mod installation.
- Delete leftover files from its installation directory.
- Download or reinstall the complete mod package from the project’s official distribution source.
- Install any required base game or mod dependencies exactly as instructed.
- Launch the clean mod before adding optional addons.
- Add addons one at a time and test after each change.
Do not combine bin folders from different S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. Do not copy xrNetServer.dll from a retail game into a standalone mod unless the mod author explicitly requires that exact file.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a game file after an update, mod installation, or false positive detection. This does not prove that the file was malicious.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected game folder or
xrNetServer.dll. - If the item clearly belongs to your legitimate installation, follow Windows Security’s restore option.
- Return to Steam or the game installer and verify or repair the installation.
- Start the game again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the file is quarantined again, stop launching the game and investigate the installation source, mod package, and security detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Restore missing game dependencies
The error “The specified module could not be found” can appear even when xrNetServer.dll is visible in the bin folder. Windows may be unable to load one of its dependent X-Ray DLLs or an old runtime.
First, repair the whole game installation. Then check for bundled installers:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for folders named
DirectX,Redist,Support, or similar. - Run the included DirectX and Visual C++ installers.
- If an installer was canceled during the original setup, run it manually as administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game without mods.
Steam notes that some games require secondary installers for DirectX and C++ components. Microsoft also explains that the appropriate Visual C++ redistributable depends on how the application was built. Installing the newest package does not supply xrNetServer.dll itself.
Do not install random runtime packages from DLL download pages. Use the game’s bundled installers or Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.

Fix 5: Enable DirectPlay for multiplayer problems
DirectPlay is not the normal fix for a genuinely missing xrNetServer.dll. It is relevant when the game’s single-player mode works but multiplayer, server creation, or legacy networking fails.

- Select Programs.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select DirectPlay.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Test multiplayer again.
Microsoft documents DirectPlay as a legacy optional Windows component. If enabling it does not help, check firewall permissions, network configuration, and whether the game or mod still supports the intended multiplayer mode.
Fix 6: Treat a crash differently from a missing file
An application-crash report may name xrNetServer.dll as the faulting module and show an exception such as 0xc0000005. That means Windows loaded the DLL and the process later crashed inside or around that module. It is different from “file not found.”
If the file exists and the game crashes:
- Remove recently installed mods, addons, reshade packages, and unofficial patches.
- Restore the original
binfolder. - Test a new game or an unmodified save.
- Run the game using the correct executable for that release.
- Try Windows compatibility settings only as a test, not as a guaranteed fix.
- Check whether the crash occurs only during multiplayer or server creation.
- Reinstall the matching game or mod if the clean installation still crashes.
A DLL copied from another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. version can make this problem worse by creating an engine mismatch.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a game-private DLL that never shipped with Windows.
Use them when you also have damaged Windows features, repeated system application failures, or broader corruption symptoms.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify or reinstall the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing corrupted Windows components. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the game still lacks the file, return to the game or mod installation rather than repeating these commands.

A display, audio, or network driver can contribute to a game crash, but updating a driver will not replace xrNetServer.dll.

Use Device Manager when the game also shows graphics, audio, network, or device errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Note the driver provider and date.
- Use Update driver or obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Avoid changing several drivers at once, because that makes the cause harder to identify.

Do not copy xrnetserver.dll into System32
Random DLL downloads create three separate risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been tampered with.
- It may belong to a different S.T.A.L.K.E.R. release or mod.
- It may have the wrong architecture or require dependencies that are still absent.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 also hides the real problem: the game’s bin folder is incomplete or internally mismatched.
regsvr32 xrNetServer.dll is not an appropriate repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. xrNetServer.dll is an X-Ray engine module, not a known COM component, so registration can produce an entry-point error without repairing the game.
How to report the problem
If the error remains after a clean repair, record:
- The exact game edition
- Whether it is Steam, GOG, retail, or a standalone mod
- The patch, mod, or addon installed
- The complete error text
- The full installation path
- Whether
xrNetServer.dllexists inbin - Antivirus quarantine or protection-history details
- Whether single-player works
- The crash log or Windows faulting-module report
This information distinguishes a missing file, a dependency failure, a mismatched mod, and a crash occurring after the DLL has loaded.

Usually in the affected installation’s bin folder, next to the matching X-Ray executable and other engine DLLs.

Normally no. SFC repairs Windows system files, not files belonging to a game.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Verify or reinstall the complete game or mod from its official source.
Does DirectPlay fix the missing-file error?
Usually not. DirectPlay is mainly relevant to legacy multiplayer or networking failures when the game itself launches.
What if verification keeps failing?
Check antivirus history, permissions, disk health, leftover mod files, and whether the installation is unofficial. A clean reinstall may be necessary.
Preventing another xrnetserver.dll error
Keep each S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game and standalone mod in its own installation folder. Use the mod author’s complete package, avoid mixing engine files between releases, and keep backups of saves before changing the installation.
When a game update or antivirus event is followed by a missing-DLL message, verify the complete installation first. That restores the correct build and its dependencies instead of creating a second problem with an unrelated DLL.
