Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, write down:
- Which program shows the error: a Xerox utility, scanning program, imaging application, or another program that starts with Windows.
- When it appears: during startup, when scanning, after printing, or immediately after an uninstall, update, antivirus alert, or Windows upgrade.
- Your Xerox model: the exact WorkCentre or WorkCentre Pro model shown on the device.
- Your Windows edition and architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- The file path: if the message or diagnostic tool shows where
xrwcdev.dllwas found, record it.

xrwcdev.dll is associated with Xerox WorkCentre Pro software, not with Windows itself. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact Xerox printer, scanner, WIA, TWAIN, or imaging package that originally installed it.
What xrwcdev.dll is
Public file metadata identifies xrwcdev.dll as Xerox WorkCentre Pro, reportedly published by Xerox Corporation. Common listings describe a 32-bit build numbered 4.33.7.4, with a size of approximately 296,960 bytes. These records are useful for identification, but they are not a current Xerox file manifest, so the version and size should not be treated as proof that every copy must match them.

The strongest documented connection is the older Xerox WorkCentre Pro scanner and WIA driver family. Xerox documentation describes Windows XP-era WIA software for several WorkCentre Pro scanner models, including the WC Pro 32/40 Color, 35/45/55, and 65/75/90 families. That documentation confirms the product family, but it does not explicitly name xrwcdev.dll.
This file is therefore best treated as an application or driver component:

C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - The exact WorkCentre model cannot be identified from the filename alone.
- A 32-bit Xerox component can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must remain in the correct Xerox application or driver directory.
- There is no reliable reason to install Visual C++ merely because
xrwcdev.dllis missing.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because xrwcdev.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because xrwcdev.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting xrwcdev.dll.”
- “Error loading xrwcdev.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point was not found in the dynamic link library xrwcdev.dll.”
These messages are reported by public troubleshooting indexes and are not all independently confirmed in Xerox documentation.
“Missing” does not always mean the file itself has been deleted. Windows may also display “The specified module could not be found” when xrwcdev.dll exists but another DLL that it requires is absent. An incompatible Xerox package, an incorrect file location, or a damaged installation can produce similar symptoms.
Fix 1: Repair the Xerox software from Windows
Start with the installed Xerox package because it is the fastest low-risk repair.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for entries containing Xerox, WorkCentre, WorkCentre Pro, Scanner, WIA, or TWAIN.
- Select the relevant entry and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and allow Windows to complete the operation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Xerox utility or scanning program again.
If there is no Repair option, select Modify or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Select the Xerox package, choose Change, and follow the installer’s repair option.
A successful repair normally means that the original program opens without the DLL message and the scanner or printer is still detected. If the error remains, return to the same list, uninstall only the damaged Xerox package, restart, and continue with the official reinstall below.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Xerox model package
Do not install a similarly named package for a different WorkCentre model. Older Xerox devices can use different dependencies even when their utilities look similar.

- Find the model name on the device, its control panel, or the existing Windows printer entry.
- Open the official Xerox Support and Drivers site by navigating there manually.
- Search for the exact WorkCentre model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture where those choices are available.
- Look for the scanner, WIA, TWAIN, printer, or full software package that matches the program producing the error.
- Download the complete vendor package, not a standalone
xrwcdev.dll. - If a Xerox package for your current Windows release is unavailable, read the compatibility notes before installing an older package.
- Open the downloaded installer, choose Run as administrator, and follow the setup prompts.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not request it.
- Test the original Xerox application and then test scanning or printing.
If setup fails, remove the old Xerox package first from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and run the installer again. If the device is connected by USB, disconnect it during removal and reconnect it only when the installer requests it.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Imaging devices, Cameras, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Xerox device or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the model-specific Xerox installer again.
Do not use Update driver to force a random driver from Windows if the missing component belongs to an old Xerox utility. The vendor package is more likely to restore the related files together.
Manually comparing old driver releases and checking which of many installed drivers is stale can take time. Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined it
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly if the Xerox program is obsolete or has been modified.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
xrwcdev.dll, Xerox software, or the affected application. - Do not restore the file immediately. First confirm that the detection belongs to the Xerox installation and that the file is located in the expected Xerox program or driver folder.
- If the package is confirmed as legitimate, use the available restore action.
- Reinstall or update the complete Xerox package afterward.
- Run another scan and test the application.
Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the Windows folder. If the file is in an unexpected directory, has an unusual recent timestamp, or was detected as malicious, leave it quarantined and investigate the application that tried to load it.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit compatibility
The commonly listed xrwcdev.dll build is 32-bit. That does not automatically make it unusable on a 64-bit installation of Windows 10 or Windows 11. Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but the related Xerox program must be installed as a complete, compatible package.

Check your system type at Settings > System > About. Then check the Xerox installer’s requirements.
Avoid these combinations:
- Copying a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory.
- Mixing a file from one WorkCentre model with software for another.
- Combining files from different Xerox driver releases.
- Using a 64-bit scanner application with an unrelated 32-bit component.
- Installing an XP-era package on modern Windows without checking compatibility.
If the installer is designed only for Windows XP-era software and refuses to run, right-click its setup file, select Properties > Compatibility, and review the available compatibility settings. Use this only for the official installer and only after confirming that Xerox does not provide a current package for the model.

If the device is no longer supported, the practical solution may be removing its obsolete startup utility, using a compatible generic print driver, or connecting the scanner through a supported WIA or network workflow.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other programs are failing
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Xerox DLL. Use them when Windows itself is unstable, several unrelated programs report missing system files, or Windows Update and built-in applications are also malfunctioning.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the Xerox application again. If it reports that it could not fix some files, repeat the scan only after restarting and checking Windows Update. Do not expect these commands to supply a missing Xerox package.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known change
Use System Restore only if the error began immediately after a driver update, software removal, or another identifiable change and you cannot access the correct Xerox installer.

- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may recover the application files and registration state, but it does not guarantee that the correct Xerox driver will remain compatible with your current Windows release.

Downloading xrwcdev.dll from a random DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different WorkCentre release, use the wrong architecture, or be missing its dependent files. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create version conflicts and does not repair the Xerox installation that calls it.
System32 is the native system directory on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither is a general-purpose location for third-party application DLLs. A Xerox DLL may need to remain beside the Xerox executable or inside a particular driver directory.

regsvr32 is appropriate only for a DLL that is designed to register itself and provides a DllRegisterServer entry point. A missing-file error does not prove that xrwcdev.dll is a self-registering COM library.
If the official Xerox documentation specifically instructs you to register this component, open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the directory containing the vendor-installed file, and use the command supplied by Xerox. Otherwise, do not guess with:
regsvr32 xrwcdev.dll
A “DllRegisterServer was not found” message can simply mean that registration does not apply. Reinstall the complete Xerox package instead.

If the error appears during startup
If you no longer use the Xerox device:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an obsolete Xerox utility.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
- If the message stops, uninstall the related Xerox program from Settings > Apps.
If you still use the device, do not disable the utility permanently until you have installed a compatible replacement. For stubborn startup errors, check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and note the program name and path associated with the failure.

Is xrwcdev.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Public metadata associates it with Xerox WorkCentre Pro software.
Which Xerox model installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact model. The evidence points most strongly to legacy WorkCentre Pro scanner and imaging software, so use the device model and the calling program to choose the package.
Can I use the file on 64-bit Windows?
Possibly. The commonly listed build is 32-bit, and 64-bit Windows can run compatible 32-bit applications. Install the complete Xerox package intended for your Windows version rather than copying the DLL manually.
Should I install Visual C++?
Not for this file alone. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ package only when the actual error names a runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll.
What if the file exists but Windows says it is missing?
The message may indicate a missing dependency, an incorrect search path, or an incompatible Xerox installation. Repair or reinstall the package and check the application path rather than replacing only the named DLL.
What if no current Xerox driver exists?
The documented scanner software is legacy Windows XP-era software, so compatibility must be checked model by model. Consider a supported generic print driver, a supported scanning workflow, or removing the obsolete utility if the hardware is no longer usable.
