xrwpcpl.dll is usually a Xerox WorkCentre scanner-driver component, not a general Windows runtime. If Windows reports that xrwpcpl.dll is missing, cannot load, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Xerox WIA or TWAIN scan package that installed it.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which program shows the error: a Xerox scan utility, a printer application, Windows startup, or another program
- When it appears: during startup, when scanning, after a Windows update, or after removing a printer
- Whether a Xerox device is still connected
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type
- Whether the error began after antivirus activity, a driver installation, or a Windows upgrade
The filename is associated with a Xerox “Control Panel UI Plug-in” and legacy Xerox WorkCentre or WorkCentre/Pro WIA scanner drivers. Driver inventories place it near files such as wiaxx002.inf, xrWCdev.dll, xrWPcoin.dll, and xrWPcpst.dll.
A reported version such as 4.33.7.3 may appear in public file records, with both 32-bit and 64-bit variants. That is only a reference fingerprint, not a reason to download an isolated copy. The correct file must come from the complete package for your Xerox model and Windows architecture.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Xerox scan package
This is the most likely and safest fix when you still use a Xerox WorkCentre scanner.
#1 Best Overall
- Flatbed Scanner with ADF ideal for large documents, photos, cards, books, and more
- Maximum ADF paper size: 8. 5" x 118"; minimum ADF paper size: 3" x 5. 9"
- Scans up to 25 ppm/50 ipm at 300 dpi
- Space-saving duplex Scanner measures 15. 8" x 13" x 5"
- Compatible with PC and Mac with included drivers
1. Identify the exact Xerox model
Check the label on the printer or scanner, or open:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Xerox device.
- Record its full model name.
Do not rely on a generic name such as “Xerox printer.” WorkCentre 5325, WorkCentre 5765, and WorkCentre 3025 use different software packages.
2. Remove the damaged scan software
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Xerox.
- Uninstall the Xerox scan utility or scan driver package.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows lists several Xerox entries, remove only the entries associated with the affected device unless you know another Xerox device depends on them.
Then remove the old device registration:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Xerox device.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows again.
3. Download the replacement from Xerox
Use Xerox Support and search for the exact WorkCentre model. Select the driver package identified as WIA, TWAIN, Scan Driver, or a complete print-and-scan package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check all of these before downloading:
- Exact WorkCentre model
- Windows version supported by the package
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Correct language
- Network or USB connection requirements
Some older Xerox scan packages support only Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. If your computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, check whether Xerox provides a newer package or a supported alternative scanning method.
Do not assume that a package for a similar WorkCentre model contains xrwpcpl.dll. The important requirement is that it is the official package for your device.

- Duplex scanner with 50-page document feeder for PC and Mac; scans in color, grayscale, and black and white
- Creates searchable PDF files to make it easy to find keywords and phrases
- Maximum ADF paper size: 8.5 by 38 inches; minimum ADF paper size: 2 by 2 inches
- Scans up to 40 ppm/70 ipm at 200 dpi
- Compact desktop scanner measures 11.20 inches by 6.5 inches by 6.7 inches
4. Install the package
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer steps.
- Connect or reconnect the Xerox device when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the Xerox scan utility or Windows Scan.
- Test a preview or scan.
The repair worked if the error no longer appears and the scanner is detected. If printing works but scanning still fails, the print driver may be installed while the WIA or TWAIN component is missing. Run the Xerox installer again and choose the scan component.
When manually hunting through model pages, Windows versions, and architecture labels becomes repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated through its free scan; installing drivers is handled by the full version, while the official Xerox package remains the definitive choice for this device.
Fix 2: Remove stale Xerox software if the device is gone
If you no longer own or use the Xerox scanner, restoring xrwpcpl.dll is usually the wrong goal. Windows may be trying to start an old Xerox utility or load a stale scanner registration.
Remove the old application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xerox.
- Uninstall the old scan utility, monitoring tool, or WorkCentre software.
- Restart the computer.
Remove the old printer or scanner
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select each unused Xerox device.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If the message appears only during startup, inspect startup applications:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Xerox entries.
- Disable an entry only if it belongs to the removed device.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random DLLs from System32 or the Driver Store. If the warning disappears after removing the obsolete Xerox software, the stale registration was the problem.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows blocked the file
Antivirus software can quarantine a driver component, although public information does not establish how often this causes xrwpcpl.dll errors.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Expand an item associated with Xerox.
- Check its original location and publisher details.
Restore a file only when you can confirm that it came from the official Xerox driver package and has a valid Xerox signature. Do not allow a replacement DLL downloaded from an unknown source.

- ONE TOUCH SCANNING: Desktop scanners make it easy for users to quickly scan to the “destination” of their choice by pressing a single button, eliminating the multiple steps usually required to save scanned documents in popular file formats
A safer approach is to reinstall the complete Xerox package after confirming the detection. If Windows Security continues to detect the component, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.
For broader checking:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run Full scan.
- If the file is outside a Xerox driver directory, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
A file that repeatedly changes, has no valid signature, or appears in an unrelated application directory deserves a malware investigation. Replace the complete driver package after scanning rather than replacing only the DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components and the Driver Store
Use this step when the Xerox installer fails, Windows reports damaged system components, or the failure began after an interrupted upgrade.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then run DISM followed by System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands finish.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the Xerox scanner again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the commands once more. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files; they do not replace a missing Xerox driver package.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC makes it difficult to see what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can identify issues through its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the correct Xerox package remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 5: Check the driver in Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows has a missing, disabled, or incompatible scanner driver.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Look for the Xerox device.
- Check for a yellow warning icon.
If the device is disabled:
- Right-click it.
- Select Enable device.
- Restart Windows.
- Test scanning.
If the device shows an error:
- Right-click the Xerox device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver software.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the official Xerox scan package again.
Do not mix a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit driver package. Windows itself is commonly 64-bit, but an older scanning application may be 32-bit. Use the architecture specified by Xerox for the package and device rather than copying files between System32 and SysWOW64.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If xrwpcpl.dll worked until a recent driver installation or Windows update, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the scanner stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart.
Use this only when a suitable restore point exists. Afterward, reinstall the correct Xerox scan package if the driver was removed.

Avoid DLL download sites and isolated files. A replacement may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, use an incompatible version, or omit the dependencies and INF registration required by the Xerox package. It may also hide the actual problem, such as a missing wiaxx002.inf installation or a stale device registration.
The Driver Store may contain Xerox components under a path resembling:

The suffix varies by Windows installation and package. Do not copy files into that directory manually.
Likewise, do not begin with:
regsvr32 xrwpcpl.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM or OLE registration entry points. It is not a generic DLL repair command. If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that does not by itself prove that xrwpcpl.dll is damaged.

If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by xrwpcpl.dll.
Use this order:
- Reinstall the complete Xerox scan package.
- Confirm the package matches the device and architecture.
- Check Device Manager for driver errors.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Review antivirus Protection history.
- Test again after a restart.
A “not designed to run on Windows” or “Bad Image” message usually points to corruption, wrong architecture, an incompatible legacy driver, or tampering. It is not evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is the owner of this file.

Is xrwpcpl.dll a Windows file?
It may be staged in the Windows Driver Store on older installations, but it is a Xerox scanner-driver component rather than a core Windows DLL. Users should not download it separately.
Does Visual C++ repair fix xrwpcpl.dll?
There is no reliable evidence that this file belongs to a Visual C++ runtime. Start with the Xerox WIA or TWAIN scan package instead.
Which Xerox products use it?
It is associated with legacy Xerox WorkCentre and WorkCentre/Pro multifunction printers and scanners using Xerox WIA or TWAIN packages. Do not assume every Xerox model contains the file.
Should I reinstall DirectX or .NET?
No. Those are not the primary repair paths for this Xerox driver component.

What if I no longer have a Xerox printer?
Uninstall the old Xerox scan software and remove the unused printer or scanner registration. A startup reference to xrwpcpl.dll can be stale.
What if reinstalling the driver still fails?
Check whether Xerox supports your Windows release. Older scan packages may support only earlier Windows versions. Then review Device Manager, antivirus history, DISM and SFC results, and System Restore. Avoid replacing the DLL by itself.
