Xsolla’s Devcom and Gamescom 2024 showcase in Cologne presented a broad “cross-play” and “cross-pay” strategy rather than one standalone launch. The August 7, 2024 announcement covered Xsolla Backend, Xsolla Mobile SDK and four Instant Solutions—Web Shop, Game Sales, Launcher and Cloud Gaming—aimed at helping studios operate multiplayer games, sell directly to players and distribute games outside conventional storefront workflows.
The event ran August 19–23, 2024, at Hall 2.2, Booth A-030/B-037. This article separates what Xsolla announced for that event from later product-page claims and pricing. Product names, platform rules, availability and commercial terms may have changed since 2024.
What Xsolla presented at Gamescom
Xsolla framed the showcase around two connected goals: technical cross-play across devices and platforms, and cross-pay through more payment routes and direct-to-consumer channels. Its August 7, 2024 announcement described:
- Xsolla Backend for multiplayer and cross-platform game services.
- Xsolla Mobile SDK for in-game payments, including selected in-store and out-of-store mobile distribution routes.
- Instant Solutions: Instant Web Shop, Instant Game Sales, Instant Launcher and Instant Cloud Gaming.
The later GamesBeat coverage was sponsored content produced in a business relationship with Xsolla. It added commercial context and company-supplied examples, but it is not independent validation of performance, adoption or savings.
The business problem behind the pitch
Studios commonly have to assemble separate systems for accounts, matchmaking, persistence, payments, catalogs, tax, fraud, fulfillment, launchers and customer support. Supporting PC, mobile, web and console versions can duplicate that work. At the same time, platform-native storefronts provide discovery and trusted billing but can limit merchandising control, customer ownership and the routes available for direct sales.

- Perfect gaming gift: Essential collectible for Halo enthusiasts and Xbox gamers who want to combine fandom expression with practical desk organization and display value
Xsolla’s proposition is to provide a managed layer across several of those jobs. A web shop can give a publisher more control over bundles and LiveOps; a backend can reduce the amount of multiplayer infrastructure built in-house; and a launcher or sales page can create a direct channel. None of this removes platform fees universally. The result depends on the transaction route, geography, applicable rules, Xsolla’s charges, payment processing, tax, fraud and the cost of attracting customers to a non-default store.
Xsolla Backend: a managed foundation for cross-platform games
The 2024 announcement described Xsolla Backend as a low-code service with a built-in launcher and website, matchmaking, more than 20 game-management systems and cross-play functionality across technology platforms. The intended use is a shared service layer for multiplayer games rather than a payment product alone.
Xsolla’s current Backend page advertises no upfront costs and payment of 5% of gross sales, alongside source-code availability and free hosting. Those are current product-page claims, not necessarily the exact terms offered at Gamescom 2024.
What to verify before replacing an existing backend
- Which engines, SDKs, platforms, APIs and identity providers are supported?
- Does cross-play include shared accounts, progression, inventory and purchases, or only compatible multiplayer sessions?
- How are matchmaking, persistence, chat, moderation, analytics, anti-cheat and regional scaling handled?
- Can the studio export source, player data, catalogs and event history, and can it self-host after leaving?
- What service-level, support, disaster-recovery and data-residency commitments are contractual?
- What is the migration path from the current account, entitlement and backend systems?
A game can be technically cross-platform while retaining platform-specific DLC, currencies, refunds or entitlements. Those commercial and account rules need separate design work.

Mobile SDK: more payment routes, more compliance work
At Gamescom, Xsolla said its Mobile SDK supported in-game payments, out-of-store builds and in-store processing, including routes such as AltStore and Epic Games Store Mobile. The 2024 announcement cited more than 700 payment methods and described support for applicable iOS and Android regulations. GamesBeat additionally discussed Android APK distribution, notarized iOS builds, Google User Choice Billing and Apple alternative-billing options.
Current Xsolla pages now advertise different figures—1,000+ payment methods, 200+ countries, 130+ currencies and 25+ UI languages—on the SDK documentation and SDK overview. These are current marketing claims and should not be mixed with the 2024 “700+” statement.
In-store and out-of-store are different implementations
Eligibility depends on the country, storefront, app build, product category and the rules in force at the time. A web checkout may be available for an APK or other out-of-store build but not for the same product inside every official store. Alternative billing can still involve platform commissions, disclosure requirements or other charges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsXsolla’s Buy Button documentation says the button redirects a player to a web-shop checkout. Fulfillment should then be handled through web-shop processes, webhooks or server-side logic rather than assuming a native SDK purchase callback. The production flow therefore needs identity linking, entitlement reconciliation, refunds, tax, fraud controls, customer support and clear failure recovery.

“700+” or “1,000+” methods is not universal coverage. A particular method may be unavailable for a country, currency, customer, transaction size, platform or risk profile. Developers should request an enabled-method matrix for their actual launch markets.
Xsolla Instant Solutions
Instant Web Shop
The 2024 announcement presented Instant Web Shop as a fast-to-set-up store for personalized offers, promotions, game items and currency, with LiveOps in mind. Current pages say a store can be created from a game link and that test sales may be launched within one day. The Instant Web Shop page also advertises saving up to 25% on platform fees.
That “up to” figure is a maximum marketing claim, not a guaranteed net saving. The general Web Shop page describes catalog and SKU management, regional pricing and restrictions, promotions and authentication through third-party providers or OAuth 2.0. The mobile-games page cites more than 200 payment methods.

A basic store can be configured quickly; a production channel still requires product setup, account linking, entitlement delivery, tax and legal review, fraud rules, refunds, localization, support, analytics and a plan to bring players to the site. A store without traffic does not create demand.

Instant Game Sales
Xsolla described Instant Game Sales as a direct-sales page that could import content from Steam and Epic Games Store and support pre-orders, pre-launch sales, releases and seasonal promotions. The current Game Sales page emphasizes 24-hour launches for pre-orders, founder packs and game keys.
Before adopting it, clarify what “import” covers. Catalog metadata import is not the same as automated key inventory, entitlement, tax, refund, fraud and platform synchronization. A publisher should test the complete purchase-to-entitlement path for every target store.
Instant Launcher
The 2024 launcher was described as a pre-designed application for direct distribution, release-stage management and cross-promotion between games. GamesBeat characterized it as a shared audience hub that could reduce average cost per lead; that is an attributed company/coverage claim, not an independent benchmark.

It lists Windows and Mac support, with Linux “on the way,” plus Steam integration and other integrations on request. Built-in functions include news, SKU and key management, analytics and launcher administration.

The commercial benefit must be weighed against another installation, another account and possible loss of Steam- or Epic-native social and discovery features. Ask how updates, authentication, refunds, platform entitlements and data export work if the contract ends.
Instant Cloud Gaming
Instant Cloud Gaming was presented as a way to launch a branded cloud-gaming platform quickly, including pre-launch testing and broad geographic reach. “Global reach” does not guarantee low latency or availability in every market.
Request concrete answers on infrastructure providers, server regions, GPU and bandwidth pricing, session and storage charges, controller input, DRM, saves, entitlement, streaming rights and minimum commitments. Cloud delivery can be useful for demos, pilots or pre-launch tests, but long sessions, low-priced games, weak connectivity and latency-sensitive controls can make the economics unattractive. No concrete public current price is stated on the supplied product material, so a quote is essential.

What GamesBeat added about mobile direct commerce
The sponsored GamesBeat discussion focused on web shops that can offer different bundles, rewards or promotions from in-app storefronts, and on alternative billing and out-of-store builds after regulatory changes. The strategic logic is straightforward: direct commerce can improve merchandising control, create first-party customer relationships and add a LiveOps channel. It also transfers work to the studio—traffic generation, authentication, support, chargebacks, tax, refunds, fraud and fulfillment.
GamesBeat reported a Tilting Point example in which some Warhammer offers generated transactions in the hundreds of dollars compared with an approximately $25 baseline. This is a company-supplied anecdote, not a benchmark for ordinary studios; it should not be used to forecast conversion, ARPU or revenue.
What changed after the 2024 showcase
| Item | 2024 event claim | Current signal |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile payment coverage | More than 700 methods | Current SDK pages advertise 1,000+ methods, 200+ countries, 130+ currencies and 25+ UI languages. |
| Backend pricing | Not stated in the event announcement | Current page advertises 5% of gross sales and no upfront costs. |
| Web Shop launch | Fast setup, personalization and LiveOps sales | Current page says setup from a game link and test sales potentially within 24 hours; savings of up to 25% on platform fees are advertised. |
| Launcher pricing | Direct distribution and cross-promotion | Current page advertises 5% of transactions plus channel cost, no upfront or integration fee. |
| SDK purchase flow | In-game and alternative payment routes | Current documentation says Buy Button flows redirect to web checkout and use web-shop/server fulfillment. |
These later pages are useful buying signals, not proof that the same capabilities, prices or terms existed at Gamescom 2024.
Adoption checklist
- Map the transaction. Identify the exact build, storefront, country, currency and customer route for each intended payment flow.
- Calculate the full cost. Include Xsolla’s percentage, payment processing, channel costs, tax, fraud, chargebacks, refunds, support, engineering and customer acquisition.
- Design identity and entitlements. Test account linking, inventory, progression, currency, keys and refunds across every platform.
- Confirm compliance. Obtain current legal guidance on store policies, alternative billing, external links, disclosures, VAT and consumer rights in launch markets.
- Test operations. Implement webhooks, reconciliation, fraud rules, support tooling, analytics and failure recovery before announcing a rapid launch.
- Protect portability. Get written terms for data ownership, source access, export formats, service levels, termination and migration assistance.
- Measure the channel. Compare conversion, ARPU, retention, churn, support load and net margin with platform-native commerce.
- Plan traffic. Prepare compliant in-game calls to action, CRM, community and promotional campaigns; the store itself is not a discovery engine.
Who is most likely to benefit?
| Developer type | Potential fit | Main question |
|---|---|---|
| Small multiplayer or indie team | Managed backend and commerce may replace several internal systems and fixed infrastructure costs. | Is revenue share acceptable, and can the team tolerate vendor dependence? |
| Mobile free-to-play publisher | Web shops and eligible alternative billing can add merchandising and CRM control. | Can the publisher drive traffic and manage platform, tax, fraud and entitlement rules? |
| Premium PC publisher | Game Sales and Launcher can support pre-orders, founder packs, keys and direct updates. | Will another client improve ownership more than it harms activation and discovery? |
| Cross-platform live-service studio | Backend, identity and direct commerce can be evaluated as one stack. | Does it support the required platforms, peak concurrency, data residency and migration path? |
| Studio with mature infrastructure | Individual components may fill gaps without replacing the entire stack. | Do the fees, lock-in and integration trade-offs beat existing providers or in-house systems? |
Alternatives worth comparing
A serious evaluation should compare Xsolla with a proprietary stack or specialist vendors, not only with another all-in-one package. Backend candidates include Microsoft PlayFab, Heroic Labs Nakama and Amazon GameLift. Commerce infrastructure alternatives include Stripe, Paddle and Adyen. Platform-native distribution options include Steamworks, Epic Games developer resources and Microsoft Game Stack. Their current pricing and exact feature coverage require separate due diligence.
Bottom line for buyers
Xsolla’s Gamescom 2024 message was an integrated pitch: backend services, payment rails, web shops, direct game sales, launchers and cloud delivery. The breadth is most compelling for studios seeking speed and a managed stack. Teams with mature infrastructure should model net economics and insist on answers about platform eligibility, operational workload, data portability, support and exit rights before treating a rapid-launch or fee-saving claim as a business case.
