San Jose’s September 28, 2026 opening roster lists Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic as its goalies; Mackenzie Blackwood is with Colorado in the NHL’s completed 2025–26 statistics. The numbers from that season favor Blackwood, but they are not a controlled head-to-head comparison: the goalies played for different teams and faced different workloads.
Are Askarov and Blackwood both Sharks goalies now?
No. San Jose’s September 28, 2026 opening roster names Askarov and Nedeljkovic as its goalies. The NHL’s 2025–26 goalie statistics list Blackwood with Colorado and Askarov with San Jose. Blackwood’s prior Sharks tenure makes this a historical comparison, not a current choice between two San Jose options.
That roster distinction also answers the immediate starting-goalie question only as far as the published roster goes: Askarov is one of San Jose’s listed goalies, alongside Nedeljkovic. A roster listing by itself does not establish who will start a particular game.
How did they compare in the 2025–26 regular season?
| Goalie | Team in NHL table | Games | Wins | Save percentage | Goals-against average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mackenzie Blackwood | Colorado | 39 | 23 | .904 | 2.51 |
| Yaroslav Askarov | San Jose | 47 | 21 | .884 | 3.63 |
These are the NHL’s completed 2025–26 figures, not live 2026–27 results. In that snapshot, Blackwood had the higher save percentage and lower goals-against average; Askarov appeared in eight more games, while Blackwood recorded two more wins. The table does not establish that one goalie would have produced the same results behind the other’s team.

What do those statistics say—and what can’t they say?
Save percentage and goals-against average
Save percentage is the share of shots on goal a goalie stops; goals-against average expresses goals allowed per 60 minutes of play. Blackwood’s .904 and 2.51 were better than Askarov’s .884 and 3.63 on those measures in this season-specific NHL table. Neither number isolates goalie performance from defensive play, shot quality, game state, or other team conditions.
Wins and workload
Wins are team results as well as goalie results. A goalie can play well in a loss or receive a win with modest individual impact, so 23 wins versus 21 should not be read as a direct ranking. Likewise, the difference between 39 and 47 games matters when comparing season totals and workload; the table does not provide a matched set of starts or conditions.

What was Askarov’s role entering 2025–26?
In an August 23, 2025 NHL.com Sharks season preview, Askarov was described as the projected starter entering training camp. That was a preseason projection for 2025–26, not a current designation. The preview said he had gone 4–6–2 with a 3.10 goals-against average and .896 save percentage in 13 NHL games (12 starts) in 2024–25. In the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs that followed, he posted a 1.68 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.
The same preview quoted then-head coach Ryan Warsofsky on the adjustment to a full NHL workload: “It’s a different schedule, the grind of it, which he’ll have to adapt to.” The observation was about Askarov’s transition ahead of the 2025–26 season; it should not be mistaken for a current coaching assessment.

How did they become part of the Sharks’ story?
San Jose acquired Askarov from Nashville on August 23, 2024, and acquired Blackwood from New Jersey on June 27, 2023, according to the Sharks’ 2024–25 media guide. The guide records two dated moments from their shared Sharks period: Blackwood made 44 saves in a shutout against New Jersey on November 10, 2024, and Askarov made his Sharks debut in St. Louis on November 21, 2024. Those snapshots document their time with the club, not a reliable basis for projecting later form.

How should a Sharks fan compare them today?
- For current roster status, use the 2026–27 opening roster: Askarov and Nedeljkovic are listed for San Jose; Blackwood is not.
- For the latest completed-season statistical comparison in the cited NHL table, use the 2025–26 figures above and keep the teams and game totals in view.
- Do not treat the 2025 preseason label for Askarov as a present-day starting assignment, or use wins, save percentage, or goals-against average alone as a complete measure of either goalie.
