Diablo 4 had an exceptionally strong launch. Blizzard reported more than $666 million in worldwide sell-through during its first five days, from launch through June 10, 2023. The company also said it had its highest pre-launch unit sales ever and that, by the end of the second quarter, Diablo 4 had sold through more units than any other Blizzard game at an equivalent point after release.
Those figures establish a record-setting launch, not a current lifetime sales total. Blizzard did not disclose a copy count alongside the $666 million figure, and the available statements do not establish Diablo 4’s cumulative revenue or units sold today.

What the launch figures actually show
Several independent measurements point in the same direction: Diablo 4 was a major commercial success when it launched. They do not all measure the same thing, however. Some are dollar estimates, some are unit comparisons, some describe player activity, and one is a monthly U.S. market ranking.
| Measure | Period and scope | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| More than $666 million in sell-through | Worldwide, first five days after launch, through June 10, 2023 | A huge early commercial result across platforms | A disclosed number of copies or lifetime revenue |
| Fastest-selling Blizzard game | Pre-launch units through June 5, 2023; console and PC | Diablo 4 set Blizzard’s highest pre-launch unit-sales record | Sales after launch or a lifetime ranking |
| More units sold through than any other Blizzard title at an equivalent stage | Activision Blizzard statement issued with second-quarter 2023 results | Diablo 4 was ahead of other Blizzard releases at the same point in their launch cycles | That it has sold the most units over its entire lifetime |
| More than 10 million players and over 700 million hours played | June 2023 | Very broad early reach and engagement | The number of copies sold |
| Top-selling U.S. game for June 2023 | United States; Circana data reported by Axios | Diablo 4 led that month’s U.S. sales ranking | Global or lifetime performance |
The safest conclusion is therefore not simply “the game made a lot of money.” It is that Diablo 4 achieved an unusually large worldwide launch, led Blizzard’s own comparable launch-stage records, and remained the top-selling game in the United States for its release month.

Why the $666 million number matters
It is a five-day worldwide sell-through figure
Blizzard’s June 12, 2023 announcement reported more than $666 million in worldwide sell-through during the five days after release. The measurement runs from the June 6 launch through June 10 and covers sales across the game’s supported platforms. Blizzard said it assembled the figure from reports by digital partners, retailers, and its own internal records and estimates.
“Sell-through” is the amount that moved through to customers, rather than a shipment total sent to stores. It is the most direct game-specific monetary figure in the available announcements, but it is still a company-reported estimate for a defined window. It should not be rewritten as Diablo 4’s total revenue since launch.
It is not a unit count
The announcement did not disclose how many copies corresponded to the $666 million. A dollar total cannot be converted into units without knowing the mix of standard, deluxe, and ultimate editions, regional prices, taxes, discounts, platform fees, and any other adjustments. Any precise “copies sold” number inferred from that amount would be speculation.

Pre-launch record
In its June 6 launch announcement, Blizzard called Diablo 4 its fastest-selling game ever. The company’s footnote defines that claim as the most units sold across all platforms before launch, through June 5, 2023. The statement also says Diablo 4 had Blizzard’s highest pre-launch unit sales on both console and PC.
This is a different time window from the $666 million result. Pre-launch sales include purchases made before June 6; the five-day sell-through figure covers the period after launch. Keeping those windows separate prevents the two records from being treated as one combined statistic.
Equivalent-stage comparison
Activision Blizzard’s July 19, 2023 second-quarter results added a broader comparison: “As of the end of the second quarter, Diablo IV had sold-through more units than any other Blizzard title at an equivalent stage of release.” That is a company comparison based on the same point in each title’s release cycle, rather than a claim that Diablo 4 had permanently surpassed every Blizzard game’s lifetime sales.

- Snag-resistant fabric technology helps reduce pulls and surface damage
These two statements reinforce the launch conclusion. One covers the pre-release period; the other compares units after release at a matched stage. Neither supplies a final lifetime ranking.
Player activity supports the scale, but does not replace sales data
Activision Blizzard reported that more than 10 million people experienced Diablo 4 in June 2023 and played more than 700 million hours. Those are engagement measures. They show that the game reached a large audience and generated substantial play time immediately after launch, but a player is not necessarily a separately purchased copy.
For example, a household can share access, a player can use more than one platform, and account or access policies can affect how a “player” is counted. The 10 million figure therefore should not be presented as 10 million units sold. Likewise, hours played indicate activity, not revenue.
What the company’s financial results add
Diablo 4’s launch affected Blizzard’s wider business. In its second-quarter 2023 results, Activision Blizzard said Blizzard segment revenue grew by more than 160% year over year and that the division recorded its first quarter with more than $1 billion in net bookings. The company attributed that performance to Diablo 4’s launch.
These are useful signs of commercial impact, but they are not a Diablo 4-only income statement. “Net bookings” is a bookings measure, and the revenue-growth percentage applies to the Blizzard segment, which includes the division’s other activities. Neither number can be substituted for Diablo 4 sales or added directly to the $666 million without a disclosed reconciliation.

Diablo 4 was the top-selling game in the United States for June 2023, according to Circana data reported by Axios on August 3, 2023. This is another strong launch signal, especially because the ranking covers a full release month rather than only opening days.

The geographic and time limits matter. The result is U.S.-only and applies to June 2023. It is not a worldwide ranking and does not show how Diablo 4 performed in later months. It complements Blizzard’s worldwide sell-through estimate, but the two figures use different sources and methods and should not be merged.
Can Diablo 4 be called Blizzard’s best-selling game?
That depends on what “best-selling” means. The evidence supports these narrower statements:
- Diablo 4 had Blizzard’s highest pre-launch unit sales through June 5, 2023.
- Blizzard described it as the fastest-selling game in its history at launch.
- By the end of the second quarter of 2023, it had sold through more units than any other Blizzard title at an equivalent release stage.
- It generated more than $666 million in worldwide sell-through in its first five post-launch days.
The evidence does not support saying that Diablo 4 has the highest lifetime unit count or lifetime revenue of every Blizzard game. A launch-stage record and a lifetime record are different claims, and Blizzard did not publish the cumulative figures needed for the latter.

The launch covered Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Blizzard stated that the game supports cross-platform play and cross-progression. That broad platform footprint helps explain how a worldwide five-day result could accumulate across console and PC audiences, but the platform information does not itself quantify sales by system.
Because the $666 million figure combines platforms, the announcement does not reveal how much came from PC, Xbox, or PlayStation individually. It also does not provide a regional breakdown, edition mix, or average selling price.

Keep the four axes separate
When comparing Diablo 4 with another game, check four things before drawing a conclusion:
Rank #4
- Officially Licensed Diablo Apparel for Men and Women; Blizzard T-Shirts; Video Game T-Shirts; RPG T-Shirts; Violence T-Shirts; Angel T-Shirts; Demon T-Shirts; Hack And Slash T-Shirts; Nephalem T-Shirts; Hell T-Shirts;
- 23ABDL00007A-001
- 8.5 oz, Classic fit, Twill-taped neck
- Time window: Is the figure pre-launch, the first five days, a full month, or an equivalent stage after release?
- Measure: Is it dollars, units, player accounts, hours played, revenue, or net bookings?
- Geography: Does it cover worldwide activity or only the United States?
- Method: Is it Blizzard’s sell-through estimate, a company financial disclosure, or a market-tracking ranking?
A comparison is meaningful only when these dimensions are reasonably aligned. For instance, a worldwide five-day dollar estimate cannot be compared directly with a U.S. monthly unit ranking, even though both indicate strong demand.
Understand the limits of company-reported figures
Blizzard and Activision Blizzard are the sources for the $666 million estimate, the fastest-selling description, the equivalent-stage unit comparison, the player and hours figures, and the Blizzard segment results. Those statements are the best available direct evidence for the launch, but they are still company reporting. The sell-through announcement specifically notes the use of partner, retailer, and internal records and estimates.
The U.S. ranking comes from Circana data as reported by Axios, so it is an external market-tracking result with its own geographic and monthly scope. It provides corroboration, not a replacement for a worldwide lifetime sales report.
What remains unknown
No reliable current lifetime unit count was established in the published statements cited here. There is also no current cumulative revenue total that can be stated with confidence from these figures. The launch announcements do not disclose sales by platform, territory, edition, or month after June 2023.
That missing information does not weaken the answer to the original question. “Did Diablo 4 sell well?” can be answered from the launch evidence. A different question—“How many copies has Diablo 4 sold in total?”—requires a later, explicit unit disclosure that is not present in these records.

Verdict
Diablo 4 sold exceptionally well at launch. More than $666 million in worldwide five-day sell-through, Blizzard’s pre-launch unit-sales record, the company’s equivalent-stage unit comparison, over 10 million June players, and a No. 1 U.S. sales ranking all point to unusually strong early demand. The accurate qualification is that these are launch and early-performance measures; they do not reveal Diablo 4’s current lifetime sales or prove a lifetime best-seller record across Blizzard’s catalogue.
