The guaranteed Alpha Scyther at Grandtree Arena in the Obsidian Fieldlands returns after you catch it or defeat it, provided you leave and come back to the area. This applies to the fixed encounter, not automatically to every Alpha Scyther that appears at random.
Where the recurring Alpha Scyther is found
The respawning encounter is the fixed Alpha Scyther at Grandtree Arena, in the Obsidian Fieldlands. Multiple Pokémon Legends: Arceus location guides identify this spot as the guaranteed Alpha Scyther encounter. A walkthrough listing also records this fixed Scyther at level 42.

“Fixed” means the game places an Alpha at a known location as part of the area’s regular encounter setup. It is different from an ordinary Scyther that happens to appear with the Alpha trait during a random spawn roll. That distinction matters because the return rule is established for the guaranteed location encounter, while random Alpha appearances are not guaranteed to come back.

You do not need a special item, accessory, or consumable to trigger the return. The documented procedure is simply to resolve the encounter and then come back to the area.

- Travel to Grandtree Arena. The arena is in the Obsidian Fieldlands, the region containing the fixed Alpha Scyther.
- Catch or defeat the Alpha Scyther. The recurring-spawn rule covers either outcome. You do not have to catch it for the location to refresh.
- Leave the area. Return out of the immediate Grandtree Arena/Obsidian Fieldlands encounter area rather than expecting the same Alpha to appear instantly after the battle.
- Come back to the area later. On a subsequent return, the fixed Alpha encounter is available again according to the recurring Alpha rule.
The available references do not establish an exact delay in minutes, a required number of in-game days, or a precise rest-and-return sequence. Therefore, treat “come back to the area” as the reliable instruction; do not rely on an unverified timer.
What “respawn” means in this case
Respawn does not mean the same Scyther remains on the map while you are fighting it, nor does it mean you can catch duplicates without resetting the encounter. The original Alpha is removed when you catch or defeat it. Returning to the location causes the fixed encounter to be present again, giving you another opportunity to battle and catch it.
This behavior is useful for players who want another attempt after a failed catch, additional experience from a repeat battle, or another chance to obtain the Pokémon after accidentally defeating it. The return rule also means that defeating the Alpha is not a permanent way to clear Grandtree Arena.
Fixed Alpha versus random Alpha Scyther
Pokémon Legends: Arceus has more than one way for an Alpha encounter to occur. Guides commonly separate the known, recurring Alphas from Alphas generated by chance among ordinary wild Pokémon. The two types should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Encounter type | What identifies it | What is established about returning |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed Alpha Scyther | Guaranteed at Grandtree Arena in the Obsidian Fieldlands; listed at level 42 by a walkthrough | Returns when you come back after catching or defeating it |
| Random Alpha Scyther | An Alpha appearance generated during ordinary area spawns rather than the known Grandtree Arena slot | May not necessarily return after capture or defeat; no blanket guarantee applies |
If you saw an Alpha Scyther somewhere other than the documented Grandtree Arena location, you may have encountered the random type. Its disappearance does not disprove the fixed-spawn rule, and the fixed rule does not promise that every random Alpha will be recreated.
Is there a confirmed respawn timer?
No exact timer is established by the references used for this answer. They state that guaranteed Alphas return when the player comes back to the area after capture or defeat, but they do not specify a universal number of minutes, a number of rests, or a required number of in-game days.
That limitation is important when troubleshooting. If you are waiting in one place for a countdown to expire, you are following a condition that has not been verified for this encounter. Instead, complete the battle, travel away from the encounter area, and return through normal exploration. If the Alpha is not present immediately, repeat the area transition once rather than assuming a particular timer.

A missing encounter usually calls for checking the encounter type and the area transition, not assuming that the Alpha has been permanently lost.

Confirm the location
Make sure you are checking Grandtree Arena in the Obsidian Fieldlands. The recurring Alpha identified by the guides is tied to that fixed location. A different Scyther sighting elsewhere may be a random Alpha and follows a less certain return pattern.
Check that the previous battle ended
The recurring rule applies after the Alpha has been caught or defeated. If you fled before resolving the encounter, the sources do not specify that this counts as a completed respawn cycle. Revisit the area after finishing the encounter rather than using a premature departure as a test.
Leave and re-enter the area
The documented trigger is coming back to the area. Move away from Grandtree Arena, then return through the game’s normal travel flow. The evidence does not promise that turning around inside the arena or waiting beside the spawn point will refresh it.

Do not use an assumed timer as a diagnostic
Because no verified waiting period is given, a result after a particular number of minutes cannot be treated as a rule. If the Alpha is absent, perform a clear departure and return, then verify that you are at the fixed location.
Planning repeated attempts
The fixed encounter is especially useful when you want a predictable place to look for Alpha Scyther. Mark Grandtree Arena on your route, resolve the battle in the way that suits your current objective, and return later when you need another attempt. The level-42 listing gives you a practical indication of the encounter’s expected level, but your own team, difficulty of the battle, and capture plan determine how much preparation you need.
If your priority is catching it
Save your catching supplies and approach the battle as a repeatable opportunity rather than a one-time event. If the first attempt fails or the Alpha is defeated, the fixed location can be revisited. The documented rule does not require preserving the first encounter, so a defeat does not permanently remove your chance.
If your priority is completing research tasks
A recurring fixed Alpha provides another visit to the same species and location. You can use the return trip to continue whatever Scyther-related field objectives you are pursuing, while remembering that the respawn statement concerns the fixed Alpha slot itself, not every random Scyther that may appear nearby.
If you are farming a specific outcome
Use only the facts that are established: the encounter is fixed, it is at Grandtree Arena, it is listed at level 42, and it returns after capture or defeat when you come back. The sources do not establish a special probability, guaranteed item drop, or exact timing for repeated visits, so those should not be treated as part of the respawn rule.

Common misconceptions
“Every Alpha Scyther respawns.”
Not necessarily. The guaranteed Grandtree Arena Alpha is the encounter covered by the recurring-spawn rule. Random Alpha appearances may not return after capture or defeat.
“It comes back immediately after the battle.”
The evidence supports leaving and coming back to the area, not an instant replacement in the same battle scene. If you remain at the arena, you may be checking before the relevant area transition has occurred.
“There is a known 24-hour or fixed-minute timer.”
No verified waiting interval is provided. A specific timer repeated online should not be presented as a confirmed requirement for this Scyther.
“Defeating it permanently removes the encounter.”
For the fixed Alpha at Grandtree Arena, defeat is explicitly included in the return rule. Catching it and defeating it both lead to another opportunity after you come back to the area.
Evidence and scope of the answer
The location and return behavior are consistent across several established Pokémon Legends: Arceus reference guides. Serebii’s Alpha Pokémon coverage lists Scyther among the guaranteed Obsidian Fieldlands Alphas and describes guaranteed Alphas returning after capture or defeat when the player comes back. Game8 identifies Grandtree Arena as the Alpha Scyther location. GameSpot explains the broader distinction between recurring fixed Alphas and random Alpha appearances, including the warning that random Alphas may not necessarily return. A Bulbapedia walkthrough independently lists the fixed Grandtree Arena Scyther at level 42.
These are guide and reference sources rather than an official game manual, so the answer should stay within what they establish. They agree on the fixed location and the return behavior, but they do not document an exact respawn timer. That is why the practical instruction is area departure and return, without promising a number of minutes or days.
Bottom line for your next visit
For the Alpha Scyther that is guaranteed at Grandtree Arena, catch it or defeat it, leave the Obsidian Fieldlands encounter area, and come back later. The fixed Alpha returns. If the Alpha you found was a random appearance rather than the Grandtree Arena spawn, its return is not guaranteed, so do not use that encounter to judge the fixed-spawn rule.
