What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. A Minecraft hopper works without any Redstone signal. In its normal state, it collects dropped items, pulls items from a container above, and pushes items into a container below or another connected hopper. Redstone is an optional control system: powering a hopper locks it and pauses those actions.
That distinction explains why hoppers appear in so many Redstone builds without actually requiring Redstone to function. A hopper moves items by default; Redstone is used when you want to stop, start, or coordinate that movement.

A hopper is an item-transfer block with its ordinary behavior enabled as soon as it is placed. It has its own inventory, so items can enter it before they are sent onward. Its routine operation has three parts, depending on what is positioned around it.
It collects items dropped above it
When an item entity falls onto the hopper from above, the hopper can collect it into its inventory. This is useful for simple pickup systems: items dropped onto the hopper do not need a Redstone pulse to enter it.

It pulls items from a container above
If a compatible container is positioned above the hopper, the hopper can take items from that container. The transfer is automatic in the hopper’s normal, unlocked state, so a chest-to-hopper arrangement does not need a clock, lever, or other Redstone component merely to begin moving items.
It pushes items into a container below
When the hopper is connected to a container below, it can deposit items there. Hoppers can also pass items between other hoppers, allowing a chain in which one hopper feeds the next without a Redstone signal.

The same principle applies to several other container blocks supported by the game. The exact behavior depends on the block and how the hopper is connected, but Redstone is not a prerequisite for ordinary item transfer.
What Redstone changes
A Redstone signal does not power a hopper into life. Instead, it locks the block. While locked, the hopper stops all three routine actions: it does not collect items from above, pull items from an upper container, or push items into the next container.
“A locked hopper will not collect, pull, or push any items until the redstone signal is turned off again.” — Duncan Geere, Block of the Month: Hopper, published April 12, 2025.

Removing the signal unlocks the hopper and returns it to its normal operation. Items can then enter from above and move onward according to the connected inventories. In other words, Redstone acts as a pause switch rather than an activation switch.
Powered and unpowered states
The implementation is represented differently in the two major editions. In Java Edition, a hopper’s enabled state is false when the hopper is powered. In Bedrock Edition, a toggle bit indicates that the hopper cannot move items because of Redstone power. Those are different technical labels for the same practical result: a powered hopper is disabled, and an unpowered hopper can perform its normal transfers.
How to set up a hopper with no Redstone
You can make a basic automatic transfer line with a hopper, containers, and no Redstone components at all.
- Craft the hopper. The standard recipe uses one chest and five iron ingots. Redstone is not part of the recipe.
- Place the receiving container. Put the chest or other compatible container where you want the items to end up.
- Attach the hopper to that container. Place the hopper so its output is directed into the receiving container. The hopper’s position and facing determine where it sends items.
- Add a source above, if needed. A container above the hopper lets the hopper pull items automatically. Alternatively, items dropped onto the hopper can be collected from above.
- Leave the hopper unpowered. With no Redstone signal locking it, the hopper handles its normal collection, pulling, and pushing tasks.
A second hopper can replace the upper container when you want to extend the line. Each unpowered hopper in the chain can pass items to the next connected inventory.
Why hoppers are associated with Redstone
Hoppers frequently appear in Redstone tutorials because Redstone provides timing and control around an item-transfer system that already works. A build may need a hopper to pause while another mechanism changes state, prevent items from moving until a condition is met, or hold a batch temporarily. In each case, the Redstone circuit controls the hopper; it is not supplying the basic ability to move items.

Automatic transfer without control
For a simple chest-to-chest line, an unpowered hopper is enough. Items placed in the upper container can be pulled into the hopper and then pushed into the lower container. Adding a Redstone signal to that setup would stop the transfers rather than improve them.
Temporary pause control
A Redstone signal is useful when you deliberately want the line to stop. Powering the hopper locks it, preserving the items in place until the signal is removed. This makes a hopper suitable as a controllable gate in a larger sorting or storage design.
Chains and storage systems
Multiple hoppers can be connected to move items through several inventories. The chain itself does not require Redstone. Redstone becomes relevant only where the design needs a pause, a release condition, or coordination with another mechanism.
What to check when a hopper appears inactive
If a hopper is not moving items, first check for an unintended Redstone signal. A powered hopper is locked by design, so a nearby powered component, line, or switch can stop collection and both directions of transfer. Remove the signal, and the hopper should return to its ordinary unlocked state.
If no signal is present, inspect the physical arrangement: confirm that the hopper is connected to the intended container, that the source actually contains items or receives dropped items, and that the output is aimed at the destination. A hopper that has nothing available to collect or nowhere valid to send items can look idle even though it is not Redstone-locked.

Remember that a hopper has an inventory of its own. Items may be inside the hopper while you are checking the source container, particularly when the receiving side is not accepting additional items. Examine the entire path rather than assuming the lack of visible movement means Redstone is required.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: what is the same
The edition-specific block-state terminology differs, but the answer to the practical question does not. In both Java and Bedrock, Redstone power makes the hopper unable to move items, while removing that power allows ordinary operation to resume.
The documented state references should not be read as a promise that every internal detail, timing behavior, or edge case is identical between editions. They establish the lock behavior. For everyday building, the important rule is consistent: do not power the hopper if you want it to collect, pull, or push items.

“The hopper needs Redstone to start.”
It does not. A hopper’s default state already includes item collection and transfer. Redstone is optional and generally used to interrupt that default behavior.
“A Redstone-powered hopper moves items faster.”
Powering the hopper locks it, so it stops moving items while the signal is applied. Redstone should not be treated as a speed setting for ordinary hopper transfer.

“Redstone is part of the hopper recipe.”
The standard recipe is one chest plus five iron ingots. No Redstone ingredient is listed.
“Every hopper in a Redstone build is powered.”
Many builds contain both powered and unpowered hoppers. The unpowered hoppers perform routine transport, while powered ones are intentionally locked at selected points.
When should you add Redstone?
Add Redstone only when you need control over an otherwise automatic line. A signal is appropriate when the design must pause a transfer, hold items until another action occurs, or coordinate several parts of a mechanism. It is unnecessary for a hopper that simply needs to gather dropped items or move contents between connected containers.
- Use no Redstone for a basic collection point, chest-to-chest transfer, or hopper chain that should run continuously.
- Use a Redstone signal when the hopper must be locked temporarily as part of a larger mechanism.
- Remove the signal when you want normal collection, pulling, and pushing to resume.
This approach also makes troubleshooting easier: if an otherwise correct transfer line stops, inspect the Redstone state before rebuilding the hopper or adding more components.
The short answer for builders
A hopper is self-operating for ordinary item movement. It collects dropped items, pulls from an upper container, and pushes into a lower or connected container without Redstone. Redstone’s documented role is to lock the hopper and pause those operations. Craft it with one chest and five iron ingots, connect it to the inventories you want, and leave it unpowered unless your design specifically needs a controllable stop.
