Minecraft on PlayStation supports online servers, but console players access the in-game Servers tab and its featured-server list rather than entering any server address they choose. PlayStation runs the Bedrock Edition, so the server must support Bedrock; Java-only servers will not work. Online multiplayer also requires PlayStation Plus, and a linked Microsoft account is needed for cross-platform play or Realms.
Does PlayStation have servers on Minecraft?
Minecraft on PlayStation has online servers. From the Bedrock Edition home screen, select Play, open Servers, and choose one of the featured services shown there. Minecraft announced servers and Realms for PlayStation in 2020, and its current support instructions still describe this in-game route.

The important qualification is that PlayStation uses a curated console server list. The normal Add Server process—where a player types a name, address and optional port—is documented for Bedrock on computers and mobile devices. Minecraft’s support guidance says console versions are limited to featured servers, so the standard PlayStation menu does not provide the same arbitrary-address entry used on those other platforms. See the Bedrock server instructions for that platform distinction.
How to join a Minecraft server on PlayStation
- Start Minecraft. Use the PlayStation version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.
- Choose Play. This opens the screens for your local worlds, friends, Realms and servers.
- Open the Servers tab. The featured-server list is the supported public-server route on console. The entries and their availability can change, so read each listing’s description and joining notices before selecting it.
- Select a featured server. Follow the server’s own on-screen instructions for joining, account prompts, age notices or other rules. Minecraft’s general guide to playing on a server explains the broad Bedrock flow, while the console limitation is defined by the support page above.
- Complete account sign-in if prompted. A Microsoft account is part of Minecraft’s online account system. Linking is specifically required for playing with friends on other platforms and for joining Realms, according to the PlayStation account-linking FAQ.
- Confirm online access. PlayStation multiplayer requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Minecraft lists that subscription among the requirements for console multiplayer.
If a server does not appear, do not assume that PlayStation supports manual IP entry through a hidden version of the menu. First check the account, subscription, game version and edition requirements below; then revisit the featured list.

Featured servers are not the same as custom server addresses
“Minecraft servers” can mean two different experiences. On a computer or mobile device, Bedrock players can use an Add Server form to save a server name, address and optional port. On PlayStation, the ordinary console interface is restricted to the featured list supplied in the game.
| Question | PlayStation Bedrock | Computer or mobile Bedrock |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you start? | Play > Servers | The Bedrock server screen, including the manual-add flow |
| Can you type an arbitrary address? | Not through the standard console menu; console access is limited to featured servers | Yes, Minecraft documents adding a server by name, address and optional port |
| What software must the server support? | Bedrock Edition | Bedrock Edition for Bedrock clients; Java servers remain separate |
| What public options appear? | Featured entries available in the in-game list | Featured entries plus manually added Bedrock servers |
This is a platform limitation, not evidence that PlayStation lacks servers. It explains why a server address that works in a PC tutorial may not have a matching field on your console. Minecraft’s Help Center instructions explicitly separate computer and mobile manual entry from console access.

What you need before online play works
PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 Bedrock Edition
PlayStation uses Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The edition comparison page lists Bedrock availability for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. A Java Edition installation or a Java-only server is not an alternative PlayStation route.

- Experience an epic legend from the Minecraft universe and the Overworld as you’ve never seen it before.
- Form alliances with new friends and familiar mobs, then lead the charge in epic battles against the fierce piglins to defend the Overworld.
- Traverse a lush, dynamic world that’s rich in resources and different in each playthrough.
- Challenge your friends or team up in intense battles as you defend your village while leading your units to destroy your opponents’ settlements.
- Includes the Minecraft Legends base game and the Deluxe Skin pack, featuring 6 additional in-game skins: 1 hero, 4 mounts, and an additional mount skin when it becomes available.
PlayStation Plus for console multiplayer
An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required for Minecraft’s online multiplayer features on console. This requirement appears in Minecraft’s current multiplayer requirements. Minecraft’s PlayStation announcement also stated that online multiplayer features require PlayStation Plus; that announcement is dated 2020, so the current Help Center requirement is the more useful reference when checking access today. No subscription price is included here because prices and plans can change by region and date.
Microsoft account linking
Minecraft’s PlayStation FAQ says a linked Microsoft account is needed to play with friends on other platforms or to join Realms. The FAQ also states that one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account at a time and provides separate guidance for changing that link. If the wrong account is attached, use Minecraft’s account-linking instructions rather than repeatedly attempting to connect a different account.
Matching game version and edition
Players connecting to the same Bedrock server, Realm or world need compatible Bedrock versions. Update Minecraft when the game reports a version mismatch, and make sure everyone is using Bedrock rather than Java. Version matching is a practical requirement even when the players are on different hardware, because cross-play is built around the same edition and compatible game version.
Rank #3
- The critically acclaimed Minecraft comes to PlayStation 4, offering bigger worlds and greater draw distance than the PS3 and PS Vita editions
- Create your own world, then, build, explore and conquer
- When night falls the monsters appear, so be sure to build a shelter before they arrive
- The world is only limited by your imagination
Bedrock and Java servers are separate
PlayStation’s Minecraft client is Bedrock. Java and Bedrock use different server systems, and ordinary cross-play does not let a Java player join a Bedrock player’s server. A Java-only server therefore cannot be made compatible simply by entering its address on PlayStation—nor can a PlayStation player join a Java session through the normal multiplayer menu.
When checking a server description, look for an explicit Bedrock or cross-platform designation. “Minecraft server” by itself is not enough information, because many community guides use the word for Java servers even when the instructions do not apply to console players. The official Java and Bedrock comparison explains the edition split.
Public featured servers versus private Realms
| Option | How access works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Featured public server | Choose an entry from Play > Servers; the console list is curated and does not accept arbitrary addresses through the standard menu | Joining an established public community with activities available to many players |
| Realm | Private, invitation-based access associated with Minecraft’s account system; PlayStation players can access Realms | Playing in a controlled world with invited friends |
Realms are not another name for the public featured list. They are a separate private service. A PlayStation player joining a Realm should expect the Microsoft-account requirement described in Minecraft’s PlayStation FAQ. If your goal is a private world for a known group, an invitation-based Realm is the relevant option; if you want to browse public communities, use the Servers tab.

Why a server may not appear or let you join
Use this order of checks, because each one addresses a different prerequisite rather than the same problem twice.
- No Servers tab or incomplete online menus: verify that you launched the PlayStation Bedrock version and that Minecraft has finished updating. The current interface labels and featured entries can change over time.
- PlayStation blocks online play: check that the PlayStation profile has an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Minecraft identifies it as a console multiplayer requirement.
- Friends on another platform cannot join: confirm that the Microsoft account is linked to the PSN account. Cross-platform play requires that link, and only one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account at a time.
- A Realm invitation does not work: confirm that you are signed into the Microsoft account that received the invitation and that the invitation is for the Bedrock Realm. Realms use the account system rather than the public featured-server list.
- A PC tutorial asks for an IP address: that tutorial may describe the computer or mobile Bedrock Add Server flow. PlayStation console versions are limited to featured servers in the standard menu, so an address field may simply be unavailable.
- Another player cannot connect: compare editions and game versions. Both players need compatible Bedrock versions for a Bedrock server, Realm or shared world; Java and Bedrock are not ordinary cross-play partners.
After correcting a requirement, return to Play and refresh the server list. If a particular featured entry is unavailable, read its joining notice and check Minecraft’s current support information, because the list and service status are changeable.
Which online option should you choose?
- Choose a featured server when you want public mini-games, persistent communities or a ready-made multiplayer environment and are comfortable selecting from the entries PlayStation displays.
- Choose a Realm when the priority is a private, invitation-based world for friends. Account linking is part of the setup, and it remains separate from the public server browser.
- Use another Bedrock device for manual server entry only if entering a custom address is essential. Minecraft documents that capability for computers and mobile devices, while PlayStation’s ordinary console experience remains featured-list only.
In every case, confirm that the target supports Bedrock and that the players have compatible versions. That check prevents the most common category error: treating a Java server address as if it were automatically available to a PlayStation Bedrock client.
What Minecraft officially confirms
Minecraft’s PlayStation announcement, published November 19, 2020, said: “It’s official. Servers and Realms are coming to PlayStation, so you know what that means.” The current support pages provide the operational details that matter now: PlayStation uses the Servers tab, console versions are limited to featured servers, PlayStation Plus is required for console multiplayer, and Bedrock compatibility governs which players and servers can connect.
