Yes, Misty left Ash’s regular travelling group at the end of the Johto-era story. The official synopsis for “The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!” says that Ash, Misty and Brock “part ways and head home.” That confirms a departure from the travelling trio.
It does not mean Misty vanished from the anime permanently. In a Pokémon Company announcement dated December 16, 2022, Misty was named among the characters appearing in the special episodes that concluded Ash’s story. The answer depends on what “leave Pokémon” means: she left Ash’s group, but she was not erased from the franchise or anime.

What does “Misty left Pokémon” actually mean?
The wording combines two different questions. One asks whether Misty stopped travelling with Ash as a regular companion. The other asks whether she was permanently written out of the Pokémon anime. Official material supports a clear answer to each:

| Meaning of “leave” | Answer | What the official material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Leave Ash’s regular travelling group | Yes | The synopsis for “The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!” says Ash, Misty and Brock part ways and head home. |
| Leave the anime forever | No | The Pokémon Company later announced Misty’s appearance in the special episodes concluding Ash’s journey. |
So the most accurate short answer is: Misty left the travelling party, not Pokémon forever.

When did Misty stop travelling with Ash?
The departure comes after the Johto journey
Misty and Brock travelled with Ash through the Johto region. Official coverage of the Johto Journeys and Master Quest seasons identifies the three as Ash’s travelling companions during that era. Their time together therefore covers the Johto portion of the original anime’s journey, rather than being a brief one-off appearance.
At the end of that period, the group’s arrangement changes. The official episode synopsis for “The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!” gives the decisive wording: “The time has come for Ash, Misty, and Brock to part ways and head home.” This is the clearest primary-source answer to whether Misty left Ash’s group.
“Head home” describes the outcome, not a detailed motive
The synopsis establishes what happens: the trio separates and returns home. It does not, in the material reviewed here, provide a full personal explanation for Misty’s decision, a detailed account of her plans, or a statement that she rejected Ash or Pokémon training. Those interpretations go beyond the wording of the official summary.

The safe conclusion is limited to the documented event. Misty, Ash and Brock part ways at the end of the Johto-era story and head home; the synopsis does not spell out a longer explanation for each character’s choice.
Was Misty gone from the anime after that?
The later special episodes included her
No. A permanent disappearance would mean that Misty never returned to the animated story. The Pokémon Company’s North America Official Press Site announced on December 16, 2022 that special episodes would conclude Ash’s journey and include familiar characters. Misty was specifically identified among the fan-favorite Pokémon characters and people featured in those specials, alongside Brock.
That announcement changes how the earlier departure should be understood. Misty was no longer part of Ash’s standing travelling trio, but the series could still bring her back for later appearances. Leaving a regular group and leaving a long-running franchise are separate events.

A return does not turn her into a permanent travelling companion again
The announcement confirms inclusion in Ash’s concluding specials. It does not say that Misty resumes travelling with Ash for a new long-term regional journey. The official evidence supports a later appearance, not a claim that the original group permanently reforms.

A new series followed Ash’s conclusion
The same December 2022 Pokémon Company announcement described a new animated series with new protagonists after Ash’s story concluded. In the Japanese version, those protagonists are Liko and Roy, and the new series was announced to begin worldwide from 2023.
This transition can make older character departures seem more final than they are. Ash’s regular story was ending, and the anime was moving to a new lead cast. Misty’s appearance in the concluding specials belongs to that closing chapter rather than indicating that she became one of the new protagonists.
Why the timing creates confusion
Viewers may remember Misty leaving the group years before the announcement of Ash’s final specials. They may then encounter headlines about a new series and assume that every earlier companion has been permanently removed. The official announcements support a narrower reading: Ash’s original travelling arrangement ended in the Johto-era story, while Misty remained eligible to appear in later celebratory or concluding episodes.
Misty leaving Ash is not the same as leaving Pokémon
Leaving Ash’s group
In the context of the original journey, Misty’s departure means she no longer travels with Ash and Brock as part of the regular trio. The episode synopsis explicitly describes the trio parting ways. If someone asks, “Did Misty leave Ash?”, this is the sense in which the answer is yes.

“Leaving Pokémon” can also suggest that a character has been retired from every future story. That is not supported. The Pokémon Company later named Misty as a character in Ash’s concluding special episodes. A character can stop being a weekly companion while remaining part of the anime’s wider cast.

Leaving the anime permanently
The official material contradicts the strongest version of that claim. Misty’s later inclusion means “she never appeared again” is inaccurate. It is still possible to say that she was absent from Ash’s regular travelling group for a long period; it is not accurate to turn that absence into permanent erasure.

What the official sources do—and do not—tell us
Established by the official material
- Misty was a regular member of Ash’s travelling group during the Johto-era journey.
- The group eventually separates, with Ash, Misty and Brock heading home.
- Misty was later included in the special episodes that concluded Ash’s story.
- The anime then moved toward a new series with new protagonists, including Liko and Roy in the Japanese version.
Not established by the cited synopsis and announcement
- A complete, episode-by-episode chronology of every later Misty appearance.
- A single detailed motive explaining exactly why Misty left at that point.
- A claim that Misty permanently resumed travelling with Ash after returning.
- Current streaming availability or a present-day platform for watching any particular episode.
- A present-day physical product or service recommendation connected to Misty.
Keeping those limits clear prevents a simple story event from being overstated. The available official statements answer the main question, but they do not function as a complete biography of Misty’s life after the Johto journey.
Why fans still describe Misty as an original companion
Misty’s departure does not erase the role she played before it. She is part of the early travelling group that accompanied Ash through the Johto region, together with Brock. That history explains why her later appearance in Ash’s concluding specials was treated as significant: the announcement framed her as one of the familiar characters associated with Ash’s story.

“Regular companion” is therefore the useful category. It describes the characters who travel with Ash for an extended section of the main journey. “Returning character” describes someone who can appear later without occupying that same day-to-day role. Misty moved from the first category to the second.
The best one-sentence answer
Misty did leave Ash’s travelling group at the end of the Johto-era adventure, when the official synopsis says she, Ash and Brock part ways and head home, but she did not leave the Pokémon anime forever: the Pokémon Company later announced her appearance in the specials that concluded Ash’s story.
