The yimage.dll error usually comes from an old Yahoo. Messenger installation or a leftover startup entry, not from Windows itself. The correct fix is to identify the program requesting yimage.dll, then repair or remove that parent application.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that matches what you see:
- The error names
ypager.exe, Yahoo. Messenger, or another Yahoo executable: remove the incomplete installation and its startup entry. Yahoo. Messenger was discontinued on July 17, 2018, so there is no current supported Yahoo installer to recommend. - You still need a legitimate older application that requests the file: reinstall the complete application from its original installer or the publisher’s trusted source. Do not download
yimage.dllby itself. - The message appears after every reboot, but Yahoo software is gone: remove the stale startup shortcut or startup registration.
- Microsoft Defender quarantined the file: verify the original file, path, publisher, and scan results before considering restoration. Do not automatically restore an obsolete binary.
- Several unrelated Windows programs are failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC. These commands do not recreate
yimage.dll. - The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or “specified module could not be found”: treat it as a damaged, incompatible, or incomplete application installation. The DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing.
What is yimage.dll
yimage.dll is the YImage Dynamic Link Library, a 32-bit application DLL developed by Yahoo. Inc. It was associated primarily with Yahoo. Messenger and handled image-related functions inside that software.
Reported file records include these historical variants:
#1 Best Overall
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
| Architecture | Reported version | Reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 11.5.0.228 | About 0.24 MB |
| 32-bit | 11.5.0.155 | About 0.2 MB |
| 32-bit | 1.0.0.1 | About 0.24 MB |
These are identification clues from old file records, not current official download recommendations. Do not use the version or size to select a replacement from a DLL archive.
yimage.dll is not a Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, graphics driver, or .NET component. It normally belonged beside the legacy application executable in that program’s installation directory. It should not be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run a 32-bit program, but it does not turn a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL. The application and its DLL must have compatible architecture.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting yimage.dll
Before changing files or the registry, find the executable that is producing the error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the error dialog
Read the first line and title carefully. It may name:
ypager.exeYahooMessenger.exe- Yahoo. Messenger
- Smart Bro or another old branded application
- An unfamiliar executable
If the dialog names an executable, write it down. The filename alone is not enough to prove that the program is safe, so also check its location.
Check Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes.
- Look for the executable named in the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the executable in File Explorer, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
If the path points to an old Yahoo. Messenger folder, the error is almost certainly caused by an incomplete removal or damaged legacy installation. If the executable is unfamiliar, scan it before restoring any related file.
Check startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Yahoo., Messenger,
ypager.exe, or an entry whose file location points to the old application. - Select the entry and click Disable.
Disabling startup prevents the error from appearing at boot, but it does not remove the broken application. Continue with the uninstall steps below.

Fix 2: Uninstall the obsolete parent application
This is the safest solution when you no longer use Yahoo. Messenger.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps and Features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Search for Yahoo. Messenger or the program named in the error.
- Select the application.
- Click the three-dot menu or Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Task Manager > Startup apps and disable any remaining entry related to the removed program.
On older Windows installations:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the parent application.
- Click Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft’s documented uninstall and repair paths are available in its Windows app and program removal instructions.
If the program is missing from Installed apps
A stale startup reference may remain even after the program has been removed.
Check these locations:
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- The Windows startup folder
- A shortcut in
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup - A shortcut in
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp
To open the current user startup folder:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup. - Press Enter.
- Delete only a shortcut that clearly belongs to the removed application.
Do not delete random registry values or use a registry cleaner. If the error continues, search the exact executable name in Task Manager, Event Viewer, and installed-program folders before changing anything else.
The fix worked if the error no longer appears after a restart and no broken Yahoo process attempts to launch.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete application only if you still need it
A missing DLL is usually a symptom of an incomplete application installation. Copying one file back does not restore the executable, configuration, dependencies, or matching version.
If a supported third-party application is requesting yimage.dll:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall if repair is unavailable.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer only from the application publisher’s official website or use the original installation media.
- Install the complete program.
- Restart again.
- Launch the application and check whether the error returns.
If the application offers Repair:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program.
- Choose Advanced options where available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test the application.
Yahoo. Messenger is not a current supported product. Since it was discontinued, do not treat random archived installers as an official repair source. If you no longer have a trusted original installer, removing the obsolete program and startup entry is safer than rebuilding it from an unknown package.

The repair succeeded when the application starts normally and its installation directory contains the matching files supplied by the complete installer.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a DLL. That does not prove the detection was incorrect, especially with an obsolete binary from an unknown source.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand any detection associated with the application or
yimage.dll.
Microsoft explains the quarantine and restore controls in its Protection history documentation.
Only consider restoring the file when all of these are true:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- You know which legitimate application installed it.
- The file came from the original publisher or trusted installation media.
- Its location matches the application folder.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are credible.
- A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.
For an old Yahoo binary downloaded from an unknown archive, leave it quarantined and remove the dependent application. If malware is possible, run Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. For a deeper check, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Microsoft documents these options in its Windows virus and threat protection guide.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
Because yimage.dll is a third-party application module, SFC and DISM will not download or recreate it. Use them only when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, repeated system errors, or failed Windows components.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart.
DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Microsoft documents these commands in its Windows image repair guidance.

Repeating SFC will not fix a missing Yahoo module. If both commands complete successfully but the same yimage.dll message remains, return to the parent-application and startup checks.
Manually hunting through Windows component repairs and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Do not run:
regsvr32 yimage.dll
This may produce an entry-point error, change nothing, or encourage you to place the file in the wrong directory. Microsoft describes the command’s intended registration use in its regsvr32 documentation.
An application runtime DLL normally needs to be present in the application’s own directory and loaded by the correct executable. It does not generally need COM registration.

yimage.dll is not identified as a graphics driver, DirectX component, .NET file, or Microsoft runtime. Installing Visual C++, enabling Windows Features, or updating a GPU driver will not normally restore it.
You can still check for unrelated system problems:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and check for warning icons.
- Right-click a device and select Update driver only when Windows identifies a device problem.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off from Start only when a specific application documents a missing Windows feature.
Do not install a driver package merely because a DLL error appears. If the same computer also has genuine device problems, manually comparing hardware IDs and driver versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the Yahoo application that owns yimage.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent software change
If the error began immediately after removing a program, installing security software, or applying a system change, System Restore may return application and startup configuration to an earlier restore point.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Pick a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the result.
- Click Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not guarantee that an old Yahoo installation will work on a current Windows release. It is mainly useful when the error was caused by a recent configuration change. Microsoft explains the feature in its System Restore guide.
Why downloading yimage.dll is the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- It may be the wrong historical version.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be missing dependent files.
- It may not match the executable requesting it.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64can create DLL search-order and architecture conflicts. - It leaves the damaged parent application and stale startup entry in place.
The safe sources are the original installer, trusted installation media, or the official publisher of a currently supported application. For Yahoo. Messenger specifically, the product’s discontinued status means removing the obsolete software is usually safer than attempting to reconstruct it from unofficial files.

FAQ
Is yimage.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a 32-bit application DLL associated mainly with Yahoo. Messenger and Yahoo software. Windows does not require it for normal operation.
Where should yimage.dll be installed?
It should normally be beside the executable for the application that uses it, inside that application’s installation directory. It should not be placed globally in System32 or SysWOW64.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why did the error appear after uninstalling Yahoo. Messenger?
The files may have been removed while a startup shortcut or registration still attempts to launch ypager.exe. Disable and remove the stale startup reference, then restart.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no evidence that these Microsoft runtimes supply yimage.dll. Reinstall the parent application instead.
What does “the specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that yimage.dll is missing, but it can also mean that one of its dependencies is missing. Identify the executable first and repair its complete installation.
Can a 64-bit Windows installation use this DLL?
Yes, a 64-bit Windows system can run a 32-bit application. The DLL still must match the 32-bit executable and belong to the correct application version.
Should I restore yimage.dll from antivirus quarantine?
Only after verifying the publisher, original path, digital signature, and security status. For an obsolete file from an unknown archive, leave it quarantined and remove the dependent program.
What if the error continues after uninstalling Yahoo. Messenger?
Check Task Manager > Startup apps, both startup folders, scheduled tasks, and the exact executable named in the dialog. If no Yahoo process remains, inspect Event Viewer for the program that is still requesting the DLL.
