Use a yorker when you can reliably land a very full ball near the batter’s feet or the base of the stumps and that precision suits your plan. Choose a conventional full-length ball when you want to use swing, invite a drive or create a chance off the edge. Neither is automatically safer: a yorker that lands short can become a hittable half-volley, while one that goes too full can turn into a full toss.
What separates a yorker from a conventional full-length ball?
The key difference is where the ball pitches. A yorker lands very close to the batter, around the feet or base of the stumps. A conventional full ball pitches farther away, where the batter can play a front-foot stroke. The distinction matters because each length supports a different plan—and a different kind of miss. Cricket for India’s coaching guide distinguishes full length from other lengths, while Discovery’s cricket coaching manual describes the yorker and its miss risks.

When is a yorker the better choice?
When the plan is to cramp the batter
A yorker is suited to a plan aimed at the batter’s feet or the base of the stumps. It is a precision option: the intended line matters, and the batter’s movement may require an adjustment. In an ECB feature, England fast bowler Chris Jordan describes practising distinct wide, straight and leg-stump yorker targets, including against a batter shuffling across the crease. The ECB account describes his drill and approach.

Jordan says he practises yorkers for the back end of an innings and varies the target as a batter moves. He put his practice aim this way: “If you are bowling two overs at the back end you are trying to get 10 yorkers in.” That is his description of a personal target, not a proven success rate or a universal requirement. The same ECB feature quotes his assessment: “Bats are getting bigger, guys are hitting the ball a lot further so your precision has got to be up there.”

When you can control the narrow target
Choose the yorker when your control and practice support the particular target you intend to hit. If you cannot reliably land it, the miss can hand the batter a scoring opportunity: short of the target may become a half-volley, while too full may become a full toss. Discovery’s coaching manual covers these basic yorker-miss outcomes.
When is a conventional full ball the better choice?
When the plan depends on swing
If you want movement through the air and a driveable line or length, a conventional full ball may fit better than aiming at the batter’s toes. In a player interview, India fast bowler Umesh Yadav discusses release alignment and wrist position in controlling swing. That is a different skill emphasis from simply trying to hit a yorker-length target. The BCCI interview provides his account.

When you want to invite a drive
A fuller ball that pitches far enough from the batter to be driven can support a plan to create front-foot pressure or a chance off the edge. This is a tactical inference from the difference between a driveable full length and a yorker at the feet—not a universal rule. The ball still needs to be controlled: overpitching can also leave a half-volley, so a conventional full ball is not miss-proof. Cricket for India’s guide explains the distinction in bowling lengths.

| What to assess | Yorker fits better when… | Conventional full length fits better when… |
|---|---|---|
| Batter’s position | You have read the batter’s movement and can adjust the line while still aiming for the intended length. Jordan’s ECB-described drill practises against a shuffling batter. | You want to attack a more stable front-foot position with a ball the batter must drive or judge. |
| Main plan | You are trying to cramp the batter at the feet or use a practised late-innings target. | You are relying on swing or want to invite a drive and possible edge. |
| Your control | You can repeatedly hit the specific yorker line and length you have practised. | Your repeatable full ball better supports movement or a drive-and-edge plan, with less risk of a yorker miss. |
| Cost of a miss | The intended target and field make the risk worthwhile; an inaccurate attempt can leave a scoring chance. | You want to avoid missing too full, while accepting that an overpitched ball can still become a half-volley. |
Use this as a decision aid, not a command to bowl one length every ball. The available coaching sources do not establish a universal formula by format, pitch, batter handedness or field. Adapt the choice to match conditions and the bowler’s actual control.

How to practise the choice
- Mark separate targets. The ECB account says Jordan used different-coloured cones for wide, straight and leg-stump yorkers, with a separate marker for a slower-ball length. Flat training cones or marker discs can serve as target markers.
- Practise adjustments to movement. Rehearse changing line when a batter moves, while keeping the intended delivery and length clear.
- Keep the delivery cue consistent where appropriate. Jordan observes that some batters may read a grip change as a slower-ball cue and advocates keeping the grip consistent. This is his coaching observation, not a prescription for every bowler.
- Work on swing control separately. Yadav’s BCCI interview discusses alignment and wrist position; attempting swing alone does not guarantee an effective full ball.
- Respect workload, especially for young bowlers. New Zealand Cricket cautions young fast bowlers against adding extra bowling just to chase speed. Its resource does not establish an ideal number of yorker repetitions for every bowler. New Zealand Cricket’s fast-bowling resource covers the workload caution.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited coaching and player sources offer qualitative guidance about length, target practice, swing control and miss risks. They do not provide a named, original-publisher statistical comparison of yorker and conventional full-length success, runs conceded or wickets. There is therefore no supported numerical rule for how often to choose either delivery or how successful one is relative to the other.
