Measure each device’s power draw at the wall while it runs the stream you actually plan to use, then multiply its energy use by your household’s applicable electricity rate. The adapter rating or a device’s published current figure is not the same as the whole setup’s streaming consumption.
How to estimate the electricity cost
For a steady load, use the measured average power draw in watts:
- Daily energy: watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- Annual energy: watts × 8,760 ÷ 1,000 = watts × 8.76 kWh per year.
- Estimated energy charge: kWh × your applicable marginal electricity rate per kWh.
For example, every 1 W drawn continuously uses 8.76 kWh over a 365-day year. That is a conversion from 8,760 hours per year, not a measured streaming result. Use the rate relevant to your state, distribution utility, consumption slab and bill components. The Central Electricity Authority publishes an India electricity tariff and duty compilation, but it does not make one rate applicable to every household. This calculation estimates energy charges; duties, fixed charges and other bill items may affect the final bill.
Measure the Pi and laptop fairly
A plug-in energy meter is the most useful way to compare the devices. Measure at the wall with the complete setup connected, rather than estimating from a power-supply label or a bare-board figure.

- Connect the intended power supply and all normal peripherals, including storage, cooling and network equipment.
- Run the actual planned stream for a representative period. Record the meter’s average watts or accumulated kWh.
- Repeat with the spare laptop, using the same stream content, resolution, frame rate, network and peripherals where practical.
- Use the measured average watts in the formulas above, or calculate the observed kWh per day from the meter and multiply by your applicable energy rate.
The laptop’s draw can vary with its model, battery and charging behavior, display state, encoding workload and attached devices. The Pi’s complete system draw also depends on its supply, peripherals, storage and cooling. A result from one setup should not be treated as a universal value for either device.
What published Raspberry Pi figures do—and do not—tell you
Raspberry Pi Documentation lists 800 mA typical bare-board active current for Raspberry Pi 5 and recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply. The 27 W figure is the supply’s recommended rating, not the board’s typical operating draw or the wall draw of a complete livestream setup. Raspberry Pi notes, “The current consumed by each Raspberry Pi depends on the peripherals connected.” See Raspberry Pi power-supply documentation.

The same documentation’s approximate workload figures cover earlier boards through Pi 4, not a Pi 5 livestream test. They were measured with a monitor, keyboard and mouse, used different network connections depending on the model, and excluded additional USB-device consumption. They are not a substitute for measuring your planned setup.
Can each device sustain the stream?
Electricity cost is only one part of the choice. A device must also encode the chosen stream reliably, keep temperatures under control and recover appropriately after interruptions. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and codec; for H.264, for example, it recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps.

Those are YouTube ingestion settings, not proof that a particular Pi or laptop can encode a workload continuously. YouTube advises testing with similar movement and audio and monitoring stream health: “Make sure to test before you start.” Check the current YouTube encoder settings, and leave upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Local network stability and actual upload capacity matter as much as the nominal setting.
Other costs and reliability trade-offs
- Hardware: Include equipment bought specifically for the stream. If the laptop is already owned, its full purchase price is not an incremental setup cost; consider wear and battery or power behavior separately.
- Unattended operation: Consider what happens after a power or network interruption, whether the device restarts the stream, storage durability and who can monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but its documentation does not certify either device for unattended uptime.
- Platform setup: YouTube says initial livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Its current Help page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming setup guidance.
YouTube describes encoder streaming for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware and more involved productions. Its listing of a particular in-camera app as supporting 24/7 continuous streams applies to that product; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation from a Raspberry Pi or laptop.

Which should you choose?
Compare the measured wall draw of both systems, their ability to sustain your selected resolution and frame rate, and the effort required to recover them after interruptions. Then calculate energy charges using your own tariff and include any hardware you need to buy. Without those measurements and your applicable rate, it is not defensible to say that the Pi or laptop will be cheaper in India.
