A shared VPS can be the reason a YouTube 24/7 stream disconnects, but a drop alone does not prove contention. Check whether the encoder is losing frames over the network, compare the stream’s total bitrate with sustained outbound capacity during the failures, and run a controlled lower-bitrate test. A fast peak speed test cannot rule out an intermittent capacity problem.
What bandwidth contention can—and cannot—tell you
Bandwidth contention is a plausible cause when several users or workloads share a network and the capacity available to your VPS falls below what the stream needs. YouTube warns that a shared network can limit an individual connection even when the overall connection is high-speed. Its guidance is to keep the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leave 20% headroom. YouTube’s network advice
For a VPS stream, “upload” means the VPS’s outbound traffic toward YouTube’s ingest server. What matters is whether that path can sustain the stream when it fails—not the VPS plan’s advertised port speed, a download test, or a brief peak result. A drop is evidence of a problem, not a diagnosis: the host network, route to ingest, encoder, or other network components could be involved. Diagnose the failure in order

Separate network drops from local processing trouble
Inspect the encoder’s statistics and logs around each failure. In OBS, distinguish network-dropped frames from rendering lag and encoder overload; record the time of each drop and disconnect. Network-dropped frames point toward the path between the encoder and the ingest server, but do not by themselves identify the VPS host as the cause. Write down the stream’s actual settings
Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, and whether bitrate is constant or dynamically adjusted. Compare the combined audio and video bitrate with the available outbound capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, reviewed in 2026, gives these recommended H.264 video bitrates:

Observe outbound throughput while the stream runs
Measure the VPS’s outbound throughput and stability under representative conditions, especially during the times failures usually occur. Compare those observations with the configured total bitrate and the 20% headroom target. A short test taken before or after a disconnect cannot show whether capacity was steady throughout the failure interval. This concurrent comparison is a practical way to apply YouTube’s upload-capacity guidance and OBS’s emphasis on connection stability.

Run a controlled lower-bitrate test
Reduce the bitrate enough to create clear headroom, while keeping the codec, destination, and other conditions steady where practical. Use representative audio and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any status messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and checking stream health. If the drops stop, that supports a capacity or stability hypothesis; it does not prove that the VPS provider is oversubscribing its network. If they continue, keep investigating the path, encoder, and host rather than treating the bitrate change as a verdict.

Try dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation
OBS can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may help continuity at the cost of video quality. OBS explicitly cautions that dynamic bitrate does not solve the underlying connection issue. Treat it as a mitigation or diagnostic aid, not a repair for an unstable host path. Check causes besides shared bandwidth
Before attributing the problem to contention, check conditions that can affect the route or encoder. OBS lists VPN interference, security software, network-optimization software, old network drivers, Wi-Fi, and faulty modem, router, cable, or network components among possible causes. For a VPS, some examples—such as local Wi-Fi or a home router—may not apply; focus on the relevant server, software, and network path. OBS’s list of possible causes
Also distinguish an encoder-to-ingest problem from playback or downstream delivery trouble. What to send your VPS provider
Escalate with evidence that lets the host check the same failure window. Ask whether your bandwidth is capped or shared, whether the host can inspect congestion, and whether it can provide relevant host-side network information. Do not assume a plan described as “dedicated” guarantees an uninterrupted YouTube stream; the provider’s actual limits and terms matter.
- Exact timestamps and time zone for each drop or disconnect.
- Encoder logs and statistics showing network-dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoder overload.
- Codec, resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, and any dynamic-bitrate setting.
- Outbound throughput observations taken while streaming and during typical failure periods.
- Available packet-loss, latency, and route observations to the YouTube ingest destination, plus the VPS instance and network region details.
- The result of the controlled lower-bitrate test and any YouTube stream-health messages.
No general prevalence figure establishes how often shared-VPS contention causes continuous YouTube stream drops, and the checks above cannot establish a provider’s network policy without evidence from that provider. A move to another VPS may help only if the evidence points to a host-side capacity or route problem; it is not a guaranteed fix.
