1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA changing Linux VPS public IP can interrupt the VPS’s existing connection to YouTube, making an encoder reconnect—but YouTube’s published documentation does not identify a source-IP change as a confirmed cause of reconnect loops. Treat the timing as a clue, then check the first encoder failure, the VPS network event, and YouTube’s stream health. Do not replace YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion address with your VPS IP: they serve different purposes.
What a VPS public IP change can—and cannot—tell you
The VPS public IP is the sender’s network address; YouTube’s RTMPS URL is the destination endpoint. If the VPS egress address or route changes while the encoder is connected, its existing outbound session may be interrupted. That is a plausible networking explanation for a reconnect, not a cause YouTube specifically confirms in its published RTMPS documentation. A matching timestamp is evidence to investigate, not proof.
Keep the RTMPS hostname, path, and stream key supplied through YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the correct ingestion hostname, TLS, port 443, and the hostname used for SNI authentication. Pointing the encoder at the VPS’s own public IP would be incorrect. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance describes these connection requirements.
Diagnose the first disconnect in order
- Build a UTC timeline. Record the exact time of the first encoder disconnect and reconnect. Compare it with VPS provider network notices, reboot records, public-address changes, and interface or route changes. This correlation is a troubleshooting method, not a YouTube-prescribed diagnostic.
- Inspect the first failure, not just the retry loop. Review encoder and service logs around that timestamp. Check whether the encoder process stayed running, whether DNS resolution succeeded, and whether a new connection could be established. A supervisor restarting a failed process can restore sending after an interruption, but retries cannot fix an incorrect endpoint or blocked outbound access.
- Verify the YouTube connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, recopy or verify the RTMPS URL and confirm the stream key is the intended one. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both; settings such as the key may be loaded from a previously used stream. Confirm the encoder is configured for
rtmps, not plainrtmp, and supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends checking the URL, protocol, and encoder compatibility when a connection times out. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and troubleshooting a live stream. - Check outbound connectivity. Confirm that the VPS can make outbound TCP connections to port 443 and that the configured YouTube hostname is preserved for TLS/SNI. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
- Check YouTube’s side as well as the VPS. Review stream health and any messages in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. The LiveStreams API exposes status and health information, including detected configuration or delivery issues. A network reconnect and an encoder, bitrate, or stream-health warning can coexist; do not treat one as proof of the other. See LiveStreams API documentation.
- Ask the VPS provider specific questions. Ask whether the reported address change affected outbound egress, whether the address is reserved or ephemeral, and what stable-egress options are available. Verify whether a “static IP” option covers outbound traffic and routing behavior; the label alone does not establish that it does. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements do not say that the sender must have a stable public IP.
Check encoder settings without mistaking them for an IP fix
Bitrate and encoding problems can affect stream health, but changing them does not establish a fix for an egress-address change. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates; the values vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s video-ingestion settings, not a remedy for a changed source IP. Check the resolution, frame rate, and codec actually sent by the encoder against YouTube’s recommendations, then use the stream-health messages to determine whether the video configuration is also a problem. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while streaming. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Make a 24/7 VPS stream more resilient
- Document what the encoder should do when the host’s address, interface, or route changes, and monitor both the VPS service and YouTube stream health.
- Use process supervision to restart an encoder that exits, while recognizing that automatic retries cannot correct a wrong RTMPS URL, blocked egress, or recurring network changes.
- When comparing hosting or relay arrangements, check whether outbound egress remains stable through provider network events, whether reserved or floating IPs apply to outbound traffic, region and network reliability, sustained outbound bandwidth and traffic limits, recovery options, and operational cost. The available documentation does not establish a preferred VPS provider or quantify these comparisons.
For stream lifecycle questions, distinguish “sending stopped” from “the broadcast ended.” YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after sending content stops; that does not establish how every longer broadcast behaves after a reconnect. Check the specific broadcast state in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
