To rotate videos in a nonstop YouTube broadcast, configure playback separately from scene transitions: use a looping Media Source for one repeating file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Then choose a scene transition—such as Fade or Cut—and set its duration in OBS’s Scene Transitions panel. Test the playback sequence and transitions together before going live.
Choose how your videos should rotate
“Rotating videos” can mean replaying one file, advancing through several files, or changing between OBS scenes. These are different controls: media-source settings decide what plays and in what order; scene transitions decide how a change between scenes looks.
| Setup | Best fit | Default behavior and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source with Loop | One video repeating | Loop is off by default. “Restart playback when source becomes active” is on by default and controls playback when the source becomes active, not scene-transition duration. (OBS Media Sources) |
| VLC Video playlist | Several videos rotating | Loop Playlist is on by default and Shuffle Playlist is off, so the documented default is repeat-in-order. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. (OBS Media Sources) |
| Scene transition | Changing between scenes | Choose a transition and duration in the Scene Transitions panel, then preview it with your content. (OBS Studio Overview Guide) |
Make one video repeat
- In the OBS scene where the video should play, add a Media Source and select the video file.
- In the source properties, enable Loop. It is off by default; enabling it makes the file replay when playback completes.
- Check Restart playback when source becomes active. This option is on by default. It restarts playback when the source becomes active in the current scene and visible; it is separate from transition settings.
- Preview the end of the file and its restart. Check the audio at the boundary as well as the picture.
OBS documents these Media Source controls in its Media Sources guide.
Rotate several videos with a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to be available; match the architecture, since 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source to the intended scene and create its playlist of video files.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the playlist after its last file. The documented default is on.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for repeat-in-order playback, or enable it if you want randomized order. The documented default is off.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS lists “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default. If the source is hidden or you switch away from its scene, confirm that playback resumes as you intend.
- Preview the playlist through its end and restart in the actual scene arrangement. Verify the order, audio boundaries, and what happens when the source becomes invisible.
These playlist properties and visibility behavior are documented in OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Set the scene transition and duration
In OBS’s Scene Transitions panel, select the active transition from the dropdown and set its duration. Fade and Cut are available from first launch; OBS also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe among its transition options. There is no universally correct duration: preview the transition with the actual scenes and choose one that suits the material. The examples of 500 ms and 1000 ms in the official overview guide are examples, not universal recommendations.
A scene transition does not make a video loop or advance a playlist. If your video is all in one scene, its playback settings govern rotation; a scene transition matters when OBS changes from one scene to another. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Use Studio Mode or a Stinger when needed
Prepare a scene in Studio Mode
With Studio Mode, prepare or edit the next scene in preview, then click Transition when ready to put it on air. You can add a transition to Quick Transitions and configure its duration separately. This workflow requires an operator to trigger the transition; it is not a substitute for configuring media playback.
Use a Stinger for an animated scene change
A Stinger uses a video overlay to cover a cut between scenes. Its cut point can be set in milliseconds or frames. For a Track Matte stinger, an animated mask determines the reveal: black corresponds to the current scene, white to the next scene, and intermediate gray values allow blends. OBS describes combined-file layouts with the videos side by side or vertically stacked. Its guide recommends a single combined file for Track Matte because separate video files cannot be guaranteed to decode in perfect sync.

OBS’s settings do not establish YouTube’s current rules for nonstop-stream duration, continuity, copyright, or eligibility. Check current YouTube live streaming guidance and applicable copyright requirements separately; do not treat a successful OBS loop as confirmation that the content or broadcast meets YouTube policy.
