Short answer: YouTube Live is the platform that hosts your broadcast; OBS Studio is software that produces and encodes it. They are not alternatives: you can send an OBS stream to YouTube. For a 24/7 broadcast, the key question is whether you want to operate a computer and connection continuously, or use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. Indian creators should also plan for YouTube’s archive limit, rights rules and channel-specific monetization eligibility.

You can use OBS and YouTube Live together: OBS is one of YouTube’s supported encoder workflows. Plan for power, cooling, connection stability and a way to restart the encoder if it stops. YouTube and OBS do not establish one universal PC specification or broadband speed for every creator, so test the actual setup and output you intend to use rather than relying on a generic minimum.

Check YouTube eligibility before announcing the stream
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires a verified channel to live stream.
- Check restrictions. The channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Activate early. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance. Do not leave activation until the day you plan to launch.
- Confirm account status in Studio. For monetization and feature access, check the channel’s Earn section and the requirements shown for that account.
Set up a continuous OBS stream responsibly
OBS settings depend on the content, encoder and connection; the reviewed official guidance does not give a universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, PC specification or Indian broadband requirement for every 24/7 stream. Avoid copying arbitrary settings as if they were guaranteed. Choose output settings your system and connection can sustain, then test them before scheduling a long broadcast.
- Prepare the channel and content. Complete YouTube’s verification and activation steps, then check rights for every visual and audio element you plan to transmit.
- Build the production in OBS. Add the sources you need, such as a game capture, screen share, overlays or audio inputs. Add a microphone only if the stream needs live voice commentary; YouTube lists microphones as common optional encoder equipment.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, start the encoder-stream setup and use the stream key and connection details YouTube provides. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and replace it if exposed. Follow the current OBS and YouTube interface prompts because labels can change.
- Test the intended output. Run a test with the planned scenes, audio and quality. Check that the picture and sound are correct and that your computer, power and connection remain stable. This is a practical precaution, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Monitor the session. Keep a recovery plan for encoder, computer, power or internet interruptions. A local recording can also provide a backup, but it does not replace checking YouTube’s archive behavior.
Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
A 24/7 live broadcast is not guaranteed to become a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Watch hours, YPP and India-specific checks
Live content can contribute to channel watch time only when it meets YouTube’s applicable qualified public watch-hour rules; a 24/7 schedule does not guarantee that its viewing time will count toward a particular threshold, nor does it grant monetization. YouTube’s standard ad-revenue eligibility routes, as described in its YPP overview accessed in 2026, are 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. Meeting a threshold is not automatic acceptance: policy review and other requirements still apply. Consult YouTube’s YPP eligibility overview for current conditions.
Monetization is also a content-policy question. YouTube may reject channels whose content is reused without meaningful original commentary, substantive changes, or educational or entertainment value. Its July 15, 2025 policy note clarifies that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under the inauthentic-content policy. For creators in India, feature availability can vary by feature and account. YouTube’s India-localized monetization guidance notes separate eligibility conditions, including age, country or region, contract and policy requirements. Check the Earn section in YouTube Studio for the requirements and status applicable to your channel; do not assume that starting a live stream makes every ads or fan-funding feature available. Rights, music and stream content
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to everything sent in the live stream and any resulting archive, including relevant music licenses. Check rights before using songs, ambient feeds, loops, gameplay footage or third-party visuals, and follow applicable laws and YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s live-stream terms set out the creator’s responsibilities. A track being available to hear or use elsewhere does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it on YouTube.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Live streaming is unavailable: confirm channel verification, check for restrictions within the prior 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The broadcast stops when you leave: with OBS, the encoder depends on the computer and connection continuing to run. Check power, cooling, network stability and your restart plan; for uploaded loops, consider a cloud workflow.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use shorter sessions or maintain a local recording backup.
- A video or track creates a rights concern: remove it unless you have the necessary broadcast rights, including music rights; check the applicable YouTube policies before going live.
- Monetization is not available: check the channel’s Earn page, feature-specific eligibility and policy status. A long broadcast alone does not establish YPP acceptance or ad eligibility.
