YouTube Gaming Stream Says “Encoding Overloaded” in OBS: How to Fix It

When OBS reports “Encoding overloaded” during a YouTube gaming stream, use Stats to separate local rendering or encoding lag from network dropped frames, then troubleshoot in order.

If OBS says “Encoding overloaded” while you rerun a YouTube gaming stream, first check OBS Stats to see whether the problem is rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. Rendering and encoding problems usually point to local system workload; dropped frames point to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Free GPU capacity before lowering stream quality: run OBS as administrator on Windows, limit the game’s frame rate, and reduce demanding workloads one change at a time.

First identify what is falling behind

Open OBS’s Stats window while reproducing the problem. The status counters and OBS log can also help distinguish the symptoms. A smooth-looking game does not prove OBS has enough headroom: OBS must composite and render its scenes while the game competes for GPU resources.

  • Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to render the scene. Look first for GPU competition from the game, other applications, or complex sources.
  • Encoding lag means OBS is not keeping up with encoding the output. Reduce workload and, if appropriate for your hardware, check the encoder choice.
  • Dropped frames indicate a connection problem between OBS and the remote ingest server, or that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS itself causes dropped frames.

These symptoms can coexist, so use the counters rather than assuming every kind of stream lag has the same cause. Lowering YouTube’s bitrate alone is not the right first response to a rendering- or encoding-overloaded warning. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide and stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Free up GPU capacity before changing output quality

On Windows, run OBS as administrator

  1. Close OBS.
  2. Right-click OBS and choose Run as administrator, then reproduce the stream workload.

OBS says this can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS and resolves many GPU-overload cases. It is a useful first test, not a guarantee that every overload has the same cause.

Close other GPU-heavy applications

Close only applications you recognize and opened that are using substantial GPU resources. Check Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS, then see whether the OBS counters improve.

Cap the game’s frame rate

Cap the game at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If the problem persists, try a cap matching OBS’s output frame rate. A game rendering as many frames as it can may leave too little GPU time for OBS to composite its scene.

Reduce demanding game settings

If the frame-rate cap is not enough, lower demanding in-game graphics settings and check both gameplay and OBS stability again. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. OBS’s recommended first steps are documented in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce OBS’s rendering and encoding workload

Lower output resolution or frame rate

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Reduce the output resolution if needed, then test under the same gameplay conditions.
  3. If 60 fps remains unstable, try 30 fps and check the Stats counters again.

Resolution and frame rate both affect workload. Lower them only as far as necessary: the goal is a stable stream your system can sustain, not the highest setting available on paper.

Simplify scenes, sources and effects

  • Remove unnecessary sources and simplify complex scenes or scene collections. Sources can use resources even when they are not visible.
  • Reduce the resolution of demanding capture and media sources where practical.
  • Review filters and browser sources; reduce expensive effects and keep browser-source dimensions to the minimum needed.
  • Use a static image source for artwork that does not need to move.

Lower the base canvas only as a last resort

Changing the base canvas can require resizing and repositioning sources. If GPU resources appear severely constrained and other reductions have not helped, create a separate Scene Collection before changing it. That preserves your existing layout while you test a smaller canvas.

Check Windows capture features for conflicts

On Windows, background recording features can add workload or conflict with hardware encoder sessions. OBS’s Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting guide specifically discusses Game DVR and examples involving GeForce Experience/ShadowPlay.

  • If background captures are enabled, disable them temporarily and test again.
  • Check whether another application is using an encoder session before concluding that OBS’s selected encoder is the problem.
  • Game Mode advice depends on Windows version. OBS’s guide says to leave Game Mode on for Windows 10 version 1809 or later with current updates; older Windows versions may need it disabled. The guide is Windows 10-specific, so do not treat disabling Game Mode as universal advice for every Windows computer.

Choose an encoder based on your hardware, not a universal rule

In OBS, open Settings → Output and check which encoder is selected. Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component when supported, which may improve performance. However, the available options and results depend on hardware, operating system, encoder generation and settings; older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality than newer options at the same bitrate.

Do not assume that NVENC, AMF, QSV or software encoding is automatically best for your setup. If you test a different supported encoder, change only that setting, stream a representative scene, and compare the Stats counters and output quality. Check for an appropriate GPU-driver update if the selected encoder is not working as expected. OBS explains the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide, and lists broad compatibility context in its system requirements.

Verify YouTube settings and test under real conditions

YouTube’s encoder settings are ingest guidance, not a remedy for local GPU saturation. After OBS is stable, compare your resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the codec you use. YouTube’s table recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; it recommends CBR and supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps.

As listed in YouTube Help when checked on 2026-10-03, H.264 at 1080p60 is recommended at 12 Mbps, with a minimum of 6 Mbps; AV1 or H.265 at 1080p60 is recommended at 12 Mbps, with a minimum of 4 Mbps. YouTube’s publication date is not displayed on that page, and its recommendations can change, so check the live table before configuring a stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  1. Before the live event, test with movement and audio similar to the actual gaming stream. YouTube advises testing before going live.
  2. Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream health/messages during the test.
  3. If rendering or encoding lag returns, continue investigating local workload. If dropped frames rise, investigate the network path and sustainable bitrate instead.

If the counters show dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection

Check whether your connection is stable and can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS suggests trying a different server and checking VPN, security or network software when relevant. Dynamic bitrate may help manage congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce video quality. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps; do not treat a lower bitrate as a fix for local rendering or encoding lag.

If “encoding overloaded” continues

Record the OBS Stats results and create an OBS log from a session in which the problem occurred. The counters and log are needed to identify whether rendering, encoding or network delivery is the limiting factor; without details about the system and session, there is no single reliable cause or universal setting to prescribe. Avoid buying a GPU, capture card or streaming PC until the log and system details establish a relevant hardware limitation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded gaming video looping on YouTube rather than broadcast live gameplay from a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and prerecorded uploads, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
