PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a 720p YouTube Live rerun, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps at 30 or 60 fps with AV1 or H.265/HEVC, or 8 Mbps at 30 or 60 fps with H.264. Its listed minimums are 2 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively—not guarantees of stable streaming or good-looking gameplay. On a slow upload, choose a bitrate your connection can sustain, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, and test the exact game footage before making the rerun public.
What bitrate should I use for a 720p stream?
YouTube’s live-ingest table gives the same bitrate recommendations for 720p30 and 720p60. The codec determines the listed rate:
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest settings, not a promise that every encoder or connection will deliver the same visual quality. The lower minimums are listed settings, not a guarantee that fast-moving gameplay will look clean or that a variable connection will stay connected. YouTube’s table does not establish that one codec produces identical perceived quality to another at a particular bitrate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
How to choose settings when upload speed is limited
1. Measure stable upload capacity
Check upload speed, not just download speed. A speed test is a snapshot; repeat it when your connection is under its usual conditions, and account for other people or devices using the connection while you stream.

2. Reserve YouTube’s recommended headroom
YouTube advises leaving 20% room above the stream’s total bitrate requirement. As a practical calculation from that advice, divide your intended stream bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the upload capacity to reserve. For example, a 3 Mbps stream calls for about 3.75 Mbps of available upload capacity before accounting for other network use. If you use a primary and backup stream, both bitrates and the headroom need to fit the outbound connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
3. Reduce demand if the connection cannot sustain it
If you cannot keep the recommended bitrate stable with headroom, do not force the recommended number. Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps, or reduce the output resolution if necessary. YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate recommendation at both frame rates, but 30 fps may be easier for your setup to sustain; verify it with a test rather than assuming. For codec choice, use one supported by your encoder and YouTube’s ingest settings.

4. Test representative gameplay and audio
Run a private or unlisted test using the same encoder, game, motion, and audio you expect in the rerun. Check YouTube’s stream health while it runs. A static menu or quiet scene is not a useful substitute for fast camera movement, effects, or dense action. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.
Encoder settings that matter
Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s live ingest guidance. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Confirm that the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate match the 720p30 or 720p60 choice you are testing. The bitrate target applies to the stream’s total outbound demand, so include audio and any backup stream when checking available upload capacity. The platform’s detailed values and recommendations are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Live rerun settings are not finished-video upload settings
A prerecorded VOD broadcast as a live stream uses live-ingest settings while it is being broadcast. YouTube’s separate recommendation for uploading a finished 720p file is 5 Mbps at standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). Those upload-encoding values are not the bitrate targets for a live rerun. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Latency, DVR and preserving the rerun
Choose latency for the kind of stream
For a passive gameplay rerun with no live interaction, normal latency is a reasonable default. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, while DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. Choose a lower-latency mode when interaction matters enough to justify its trade-off; see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Keep a local copy if the archive matters
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording if preserving the rerun is important—especially if it could run beyond that limit. Details are in YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting a 720p rerun on a slow upload
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Reduce the bitrate, switch from 60 fps to 30 fps, or lower resolution. Re-test with the same gameplay and audio, and make sure the adjusted total bitrate still leaves the recommended headroom.
- The upload test looks fast, but the stream drops frames: A speed test does not prove sustained capacity. Test during the time and network conditions you will use for the rerun, and account for other network traffic.
- There is not enough bandwidth for a backup stream: Add the primary and backup bitrates together, then leave headroom. If they do not fit, lower the demand or do not use a backup stream on that connection.
- The picture looks poor despite meeting the minimum: The minimum bitrate is not a quality guarantee. Test the game’s motion at your chosen codec and frame rate; if the result is not acceptable, improve stable upload capacity or reduce resolution or frame rate.
- The live rerun ended but no complete archive is available: Streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Preserve a local recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s automatic archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded gaming VOD to keep looping on YouTube without leaving a computer or home connection running, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
