YouTube Live Bitrate for 1440p at 30 FPS: Prerecorded Video

YouTube recommends 21 Mbps for H.264 or 15 Mbps for AV1/H.265 when streaming 1440p at 30 fps. The correct target depends on your live encoder’s codec.

For a prerecorded video sent to YouTube Live at 1440p and 30 fps, use a video bitrate of 21 Mbps with H.264 or 15 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. Those are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion rates; choose the figure for the codec your encoder sends. The lower listed minimums—7 Mbps for H.264 and 5 Mbps for AV1 or H.265—are not the recommended targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings do not give prerecorded content a separate bitrate rule.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate at 1440p and 30 fps

The right target depends on the incoming video codec, not on whether the video was recorded earlier. YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations distinguish H.264 from AV1 and H.265:

Codec sent to YouTube Recommended video bitrate Listed minimum
H.264 21 Mbps 7 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 15 Mbps 5 Mbps

These numbers describe the video portion of the live feed sent from your encoder to YouTube. Use the recommended rate when your connection can sustain it reliably; do not mistake the listed minimum for the target YouTube recommends. These figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026.

Live streaming a recording is different from uploading it

If you send a prerecorded file through an encoder as a live broadcast, use the live-ingestion figures above. If instead you upload the finished file as a normal YouTube video, YouTube’s separate encoding guidance recommends 16 Mbps for SDR 1440p at 24, 25, or 30 fps. That is an upload recommendation, not the recommended bitrate for a live encoder.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube’s live table is organized by codec, resolution, and frame rate; it does not specify a different bitrate because the footage was prerecorded. See the distinct YouTube upload encoding settings for ordinary uploads.

Encoder settings to use with 1440p30

  • Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: RTMPS is recommended. YouTube also supports RTMP.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 are listed for the documented RTMP/RTMPS setup. Match the bitrate recommendation to the codec actually being sent.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is supported.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current protocol and encoder recommendations.

Check your connection and stream health

The encoder must sustain the selected video bitrate along with audio and network overhead. A nominal speed-test result alone does not establish that an uplink will remain stable throughout a broadcast. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate, choosing a quality the connection can reliably sustain, and testing before the event with similar audio and motion. During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Its live guidance also explains that YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple playback formats, so the encoder’s 1440p input bitrate is not a promise that every viewer receives 1440p at that same bitrate. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance.

Troubleshooting bitrate and quality problems

  • YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient stream: Check that the encoder is using CBR and that the connection can sustain the selected rate. Test upload bitrate and, if necessary, choose a lower quality that is reliable rather than keeping an unstable target.
  • The stream looks soft or blocky: Confirm the encoder is sending 1440p at 30 fps and the intended codec, then check that its video bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for that codec. A lower listed minimum is not the recommended target.
  • The stream does not meet the keyframe recommendation: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and keep it within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • You are applying a finished-file upload setting to a live feed: Use YouTube’s live recommendation for the stream’s codec instead of the separate 16 Mbps SDR upload figure.
  • Playback differs across viewers: YouTube creates multiple output formats from a live input, and viewers’ playback quality can vary. The incoming encoder bitrate does not guarantee a particular playback bitrate for each viewer.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without a home encoder

If your goal is to loop prerecorded video on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video up to 4K at 60 fps as supplied, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo is for YouTube streaming only.

Copyright and prerecorded content

A technically correct bitrate does not determine whether you have permission to broadcast the material. Before streaming prerecorded footage, make sure you have the rights needed for its video, music, and other included content, and check YouTube’s applicable rules. A bitrate recommendation is not an approval or copyright clearance.
