YouTube Live Bitrate for 480p: Low-Bandwidth Settings and OBS Looping

For 480p at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps H.264 or 3 Mbps AV1/H.265. Learn how much upload headroom to leave and how to loop a video in OBS.

For a 480p YouTube Live stream at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Aim for roughly 20% more stable upload capacity than the encoder bitrate: about 5 Mbps available for a 4 Mbps H.264 stream, before other network traffic. If you are looping a video in OBS, use a Media Source and enable Loop.

Recommended 480p bitrate and upload speed

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists 480p at 30 fps. Its recommended encoder-to-YouTube ingestion rates depend on the codec:

Codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommendation
H.264 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

These are settings for the signal you send to YouTube, not a promise that every viewer will receive a 480p rendition at that rate. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. The published minimum is far below the recommendation and does not guarantee acceptable-looking video; test the result with your own material and connection. YouTube’s encoder settings give the codec- and resolution-specific figures.

How much upload headroom to leave

YouTube advises leaving about 20% upload headroom. For a 4 Mbps H.264 encoder setting, that means roughly 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity should be available to the stream. Other household or office traffic can use part of that capacity, so avoid judging readiness by a speed test’s download result. Check outbound upload speed and account for competing traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend this upload margin.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If your connection cannot sustain the recommended bitrate with headroom, test a lower setting before relying on the stream. There is no documented guarantee that the minimum bitrate will look good; inspect the actual stream for blocking, blur, and dropped frames.

Encoder settings for a stable 480p stream

  • Resolution and frame rate: Set 480p at 30 fps; the bitrate row above is specifically for that frame rate.
  • Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Protocol: Use RTMPS for YouTube Live.
  • Latency: Normal latency is a sensible starting point for a passive loop with little audience interaction. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering.

These are encoder-to-platform settings. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so the stream’s ingest bitrate is not the rate each viewer necessarily receives. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and latency guidance.

Loop a video in OBS while streaming to YouTube

  1. Add the video: In your OBS scene, add a Media Source, select the recording, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS documents this source and its looping option in its Media Sources guide.
  2. Set up the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, create or open a live stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube, and enter or connect the stream details using the key. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Set the output: In OBS output and video settings, choose 480p, 30 fps, CBR, the codec-appropriate bitrate above, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Confirm the stream is configured to send RTMPS.
  4. Test before the intended broadcast: Start a test with audio and movement similar to the recording you will loop. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages, and watch playback for buffering or visible quality problems. YouTube Help specifically advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  5. Start the broadcast: Start streaming in OBS and verify the live preview and health indicators in YouTube Studio. For a playlist in OBS, use the VLC Video source and its Loop Playlist option; that source requires VLC, and the option is enabled by default according to the OBS Media Sources guide.

Copyright, duration, and stream checks

Use material you have the right to broadcast

A loop does not change the rights in the video, music, or other material. Use original content or material you are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. A technical bitrate setting cannot prevent a copyright claim or establish permission.

Do not assume a very long stream will be archived

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived, so save a separate copy if you need a recording of a longer-running loop. See YouTube’s encoder setup documentation.

Troubleshooting a low-bandwidth loop

  • YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check upload capacity rather than download speed, reduce competing traffic, and confirm that available upload has headroom above the encoder bitrate. Retest before going live.
  • Video looks blocky or soft: Confirm the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate are as intended. The recommended rates are codec-specific; test representative motion because the published minimum does not guarantee a satisfactory image.
  • Playback buffers for viewers: If you selected a lower-latency mode, try normal latency for a non-interactive loop. YouTube warns that lower latency may increase buffering.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: Check that Loop is enabled on the OBS Media Source. For a playlist, confirm you are using the VLC Video source and that VLC is installed.
  • The stream is live but no usable archive appears: Check its duration against YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive guidance; longer streams are not established as automatically archived.
