YouTube lists lower minimums—3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1 or H.265—but those are not recommended targets. Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and make sure your upload connection has room for the stream’s total bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
Recommended 720p60 video bitrate
YouTube’s live encoder table gives these settings by ingest codec. The figures below are video bitrate, not the total network bandwidth required to carry video and audio.
| Ingest codec | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s published live encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026. The minimum is a lower bound in the table, not the target YouTube recommends. The applicable row is determined by the stream’s ingest resolution, frame rate, and codec; YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos are not live-ingest settings.
Settings to use for a gameplay playlist
- Resolution and frame rate: 1280 × 720 at 60 fps (720p60).
- Video bitrate: 8 Mbps for H.264, or 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
- SDR color, if applicable: Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth in advanced settings.
The official live settings reviewed do not set a special bitrate for playlist-style streams. Applying the standard 720p60 row to a gameplay playlist is the reasonable reading of YouTube’s general guidance, rather than a separate playlist-specific rule. If you change the ingest codec, resolution, or frame rate, use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder table instead.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much upload bandwidth do you need?
Your internet connection must carry the whole outgoing stream, not just the video bitrate shown in the encoder. Audio adds traffic, and any backup feed adds another stream’s traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom and warns that other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to your encoder.
- Choose the video bitrate for your codec: 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 720p60.
- Account for audio and any simultaneous backup feed when estimating the total outgoing bitrate.
- Check the connection’s outbound upload speed, not only its download speed. A speed test and a reliable network help identify whether the connection has enough usable capacity.
- Leave at least the 20% headroom YouTube recommends above the total bitrate being sent. Do not assume an upload connection that merely matches the video bitrate is sufficient.
Upload capacity can vary, particularly on a shared connection. If the connection cannot sustain the target with headroom, reduce the outgoing load or improve the available upload capacity before relying on the stream.

Codec, buffering, and stream delay
The bitrate recommendation changes with ingest codec: YouTube’s 720p60 recommendation is 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Codec support and the chosen output settings determine which figure applies; do not select a lower minimum simply because it appears in the table if your goal is YouTube’s recommended setting.
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture at the encoder or camera and display to viewers. Its guidance notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Latency is a separate trade-off from the bitrate table: the reviewed settings do not specify a different 720p60 bitrate for a playlist or gameplay presentation based on latency mode.

Common setup problems
- Using the prerecorded-video upload bitrate table: Live ingest has its own codec-specific settings. Use the live encoder table for the stream sent to YouTube.
- Setting the encoder to the minimum and expecting the recommended target: The minimum and recommended values are distinct. At 720p60, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Upload speed appears adequate, but the stream is unstable: A test may show download rather than upload, shared network use can cut into capacity, and video bitrate excludes audio and backup streams. Check outbound speed and leave the recommended headroom.
- Keyframes are too far apart: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Assuming a playlist needs a custom bitrate: The official guidance reviewed does not establish a playlist-specific figure. Use the standard row for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Or let it run in the cloud
If this is a prerecorded gameplay playlist you want to keep live continuously, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps, with one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not live camera capture. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
